Chapter 279: Chapter 291: The Repeated Confessions (28)
Percy Stanton, standing on the outskirts of the crowd, clearly heard what Evelyn Osbert said. His brow furrowed, and he abruptly lifted his hand, pushing aside several people in front of him.
He pushed one person a bit too hard, nearly causing him to fall. The man, visibly irritated, turned to Percy Stanton and shouted, "Are you out of your ..."
His words were cut off mid-sentence by the icy stare from Percy Stanton, as if a chill had lodged itself in his throat.
Percy Stanton moved quickly, swiftly shouldering his way to the front. His gaze immediately locked onto Isabel Smith.
Blood covered her face, contrasting starkly against her usually pale skin. Lying there lifelessly, she looked as if she was dead.
Percy Stanton felt as though he’d been electrocuted. His legs buckled slightly, and he almost collapsed onto the ground.
His placid heart began to hammer uncontrollably in his chest.
His stunning face exhibited a rare sign of panic.
He struggled to steady himself, trying to maintain his usual composed demeanor, and slowly walked over to Isabel Smith. Seeing Elijah Smith remaining silent, Evelyn Osbert took a cautious look at Mrs. Smith and said remorsefully, "Grandma, this is all my fault. If anything happens to Sister Isabel, I... I..."
As Evelyn Osbert spoke, she began to feel helpless. Quietly gritting her teeth, she got up from Elijah Smith’s arms, and knelt on the ground. She reached out and clung to Mrs. Smith’s hand, begging, "Grandma, scold me... it’s all my fault... Grandma, scold me..."
"What good would scolding you do!" Mrs. Smith took a moment to recover from the sight of Isabel Smith lying unconscious on the ground. She snapped at Evelyn Osbert, "If I scold you, would it undo what has happened?"
Upon hearing Mrs. Smith’s words, Evelyn Osbert’s tears fell unrestrained. She looked devastated, and eventually broke down with sobs. She clung onto Mrs. Smith’s hand and tried to slap her own face, pleading, "Grandma, hit me... hit me..."
Percy Stanton lowered his eyes, looking at Isabel Smith lying at his feet. With eyes tightly closed, messy hair and appearances devoid of her usual elegance, she looked like a broken doll without its soul.
Percy Stanton’s face turned pale. Hearing Evelyn Osbert’s continuous sobs, he suddenly interjected, "Enough!"
His tone was firm and commanding, leaving no room for argument. Evelyn Osbert’s voice stopped abruptly, even halting her sobs.
Only then did Percy Stanton shift his pale gaze towards Mrs. Smith, Evelyn Osbert, and Elijah Smith and spoke, "What are all of you standing here for? After witnessing such a serious accident, why isn’t she being taken to the hospital?"
"We have called an ambulance..." a track employee who was standing next to Mrs. Smith quietly chimed in.
"Ambulance?!" Percy Stanton immediately retorted before the employee could finish. He gave the staffer a cold stare and said icily, "We are in the suburbs. It will take at least two hours for the ambulance to get here. Do you have any idea what two hours means to a victim of an accident? Those two hours could mean the difference between life and death!"
Elijah Smith, kneeling beside Isabel Smith, was jolted to reality upon hearing this. He scrambled on all fours towards Isabel Smith, intending to lift her.
Percy Stanton, however, raised his foot and violently kicked Elijah Smith’s arm, knocking him onto the nearby grass. "Now you think of lifting her?"
