Chapter 244: Chapter 256: Unintentional Care and Concern (5)

"No," Percy Stanton’s head drops as he glances at his own neck, "This is what my father left for me, my birthday gift the year I was born."

The necklace bears the initials of his father’s name in English—BQ.

Percy raises his hand and easily strokes those letters. After a moment, he says, "Actually, this is not simply a necklace, but a key."

A key that can unlock all of the properties of the Thompson Empire Group.

With this key, one could walk into a Swiss bank and access the wealth accumulated by the Thompson Empire Group over generations.

"A key?" Isabel Smith lifts her eyes in slight surprise, looking at the necklace with an incredulous expression.

She has heard of fingerprints being used as keys, but never a slender chain serving as one.

Isabel can’t help but chuckle. She says, "Your father’s idea was quite good. It’s not like a TV drama, right? Which hides a large mystery fortune behind this key, is there?"

Percy nods nonchalantly, "Yes, that mysterious fortune could resurrect the Smith Corporation countless times."

Isabel believes Percy is joking, and so she goes along with him, saying in jest, "Really? Since today is my birthday, why don’t you give me this necklace key hiding a mysterious fortune as my birthday gift?"

Percy is momentarily taken aback by Isabel’s words. He then leans to the side, checks his mobile phone, and frowns tightly when he confirms the date.

Today is indeed her birthday.

He’s been preoccupied with the collaboration between the Smith Corporation and Ten Mile Prosperity lately, so he lost track of the date.

But why would the Smith Corporation hold a birthday banquet when it’s Elijah Smith’s birthday, yet there’s not a peep during Isabel’s birthday?

Percy can’t quite identify the strange feeling tugging at his heart. In a tight grip, he clenches his mobile phone, then looks intently at Isabel, asking, "Do you like this birthday gift?"

"I was just kidding. It’s a gift from your father for his birthday."

I asked, ’Do you like it?’" Percy ignores Isabel’s comment and asks her again.

His tone is firm, leaving no room for Isabel to dodge the question. Lowering her voice, she nods, "I think this necklace is quite beautiful—"

Before she could complete her sentence, Percy extracts his hand from around her waist. He lifts his hand, pulls off his necklace, turns over slightly to lean over Isabel, threads the necklace around the back of her neck, and carefully secures it in front of her collarbone.

He is deliberate in his movements, showing no hesitation. After adjusting the necklace for her, he lifts his head, and with his slightly warm lips, touches her forehead gently, whispering, "Isabel, happy birthday."

Isabel never dreamt that Percy would really give her that birthday gift. It was only a casual joke.

A feeling of guilt wells up inside Isabel, but she’s certain that Percy’s claim—that the necklace is a key hiding a mysterious treasure—is a lie.

Because, if it were true, who in their right mind would relinquish an extravagant life, stay in Bellshire, live in an apartment, and live such a simple life with a son?

For six whole years, she never received any birthday gifts, nor did she celebrate her birthday.

Frankly, Isabel was about to forget what it feels like to receive birthday gifts and hear birthday wishes.

This long-lost warm sensation, coupled with a tinge of emotion, fills her heart, causing her to crave it deeply. After a moment’s hesitation, Isabel softly says, "Thank you."
