Chapter 239: Chapter 251: The Poisonous Mango (20)

The inside of the car was eerily quiet. After covering more than half of the journey, Percy Stanton suddenly spoke softly, "Isabel Smith, if you didn’t want to meet Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, why did you come? I told you, we could have rescheduled."

Despite not looking at her, his voice— deep, carrying an emotion she could not decipher— unsettled her. Isabel rolled her eyes and replied, unconsciously, albeit insincerely, "No, I just suddenly felt unwell. It’s not that I didn’t want to meet them."

Percy did not look at Isabel, but simply focused on the road ahead. As the beeping of the navigation system subsided, he continued in a soft voice, "Isabel Smith, lies are for those who do not understand themselves. I’m not like others, others may believe what you say because they see with their eyes, not their hearts. But I do, and I can see everything."

The man’s voice, as always, was calm and slow. He did not deliberately infuse his tone with emotion. His voice sounded pleasant, like the voice of a male radio host at midnight— each word profound and compelling.

Perhaps it was her imagination, but Isabel felt that each of Percy’s words, resonating in the compact space of the car, carried a trace of faint melancholy.

This melancholy— faint yet heavy— rendered her helpless and undefended; strangely, her heart felt gloomy as well.

Percy was still looking straight ahead. The navigation instructions from his mobile phone continued to sound. Percy quickly turned off the navigation, seemingly annoyed. His gaze did not dart over to Isabel and was mostly focused on the road ahead. He held the steering wheel firmly, embodying the concentration of a driver.

The car fell into deeper silence. Isabel barely dared to breathe, even the pain in her stomach seemed to have faded. The atmosphere had become mysteriously oppressive.

Percy looked normal, exhibiting his signature cool demeanor. His fascinating profile was still charming and captivating. His lips were tightly pressed together. Just when Isabel thought Percy would no longer speak, he asked softly, "Isabel, are you happy with your life?"

Are you happy with your life?

Such a simple question stirred an indescribable wave of emotions within Isabel. After a pause, she awkwardly forced a smile, but it looked painfully insincere. Her eyes unconsciously wandered towards the car window, afraid to meet Percy’s gaze. After a while, she finally replied, feigning nonchalance, "What’s there to be unhappy about? I’ve been achieving what I want, step by step. I’ve got you to sign, returned to Smith Corporation, and now we’re nearly finalizing the cooperation with Ten Mile Prosperity. What could possibly make me unhappy?"

"Is that so?" Percy did not look at Isabel. He simply sighed several times before throwing back a noncommittal question.

Stirred by Percy’s counter-question, Isabel started feeling a tingle of insecurity. She even began to question if she was truly happy. She couldn’t help but ask herself— wasn’t everything she did after returning from the United States for a purpose?

Reuniting with the Smith family, and Elijah Smith, seeking vengeance for Sebastian Smith’s family...she has been moving along the path exactly as she had expected. However, the journey had been much easier than anticipated. Though not fully successful, she has achieved some level of success. What could possibly be causing her unhappiness?

After reflecting for a while, Isabel nodded affirmatively and said, "I’m pretty happy."
