Chapter 236: Chapter 248: The Poisonous Mango (17)
Before stepping out, she prayed for strength, hoping she could endure the pain without giving in. In the car, riding with Percy to "Ten Mile Prosperity," she didn’t feel any pain at all. But now, sitting in the comfortable temperature of the elegant room, her stomach suddenly began to ache miserably.
Isabel Smith did not want to show her discomfort, so she sat up straight, looking dignified, trying her best to endure wave after wave of abdominal pain.
She saw Lily Adams yawn with ease, which brought out Edward Shaw’s attentive concern. Even though Lily appeared impatient, Edward showed no sign of irritation, becoming gentler and more considerate instead.
A sense of indescribable envy or discomfort welled up in Isabel’s heart. Was every woman like this? When faced with someone who cared about them, were they all so self-righteous and full of confidence? Once, when she was doted on by her parents, she had also been so domineering and overbearing.
But now, all of that seemed like a distant dream, one that would never belong to her again.
Once, Isabel, with just a hint of a stomachache, would immediately grab everyone’s attention.
Now, even if she had a severe stomachache, she had to pretend it was nothing, and endure it alone.
She didn’t know if it was because she had been drinking more red wine lately due to all of the recent social functions, but this time her menstrual flow seemed heavier than usual. In the end, she felt a wet, sticky sensation beneath her, making sitting increasingly uncomfortable. She wanted to go to the restroom, but the pain in her lower abdomen made it difficult to stand, so she could only endure the discomfort and wait.
The conversation between Edward Shaw and Percy was terribly drawn out. Every time it seemed like it was about to end, a new topic would pop up.
Isabel’s anxious heart grew more restless, and suddenly her abdominal pain intensified, causing her whole body to tremble, breaking out in a cold sweat.
To resist the pain, Isabel pretended nothing was wrong, gradually becoming unaware of the conversation outside and retreating into her own consciousness.
It wasn’t until her shoulder was gently nudged that Isabel snapped back to her senses and saw Percy frowning, sitting beside her and looking at her.
A look of confusion crossed Isabel’s eyes. She blinked at Percy before asking, "What’s wrong?"
Percy’s brow furrowed even more, "Lily just asked if you wanted to eat anything more?"
Only then did Isabel quickly turn to Lily Adams and apologize, smiling sheepishly, "I’m sorry, Miss Adams. I was just..."
Isabel faltered, unable to find an excuse. It was a conversation about Smith Corporation, and she, as a member of the Corporation, had drifted off.
Isabel lowered her head, finally only saying apologetically, "I’m truly sorry."
Lily Adams had a trait where she would only ever make things difficult for Edward Shaw. To everyone else, she was incredibly accommodating. So when she saw Isabel apologizing to her with a sheepish look, she couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed too, "No, it’s fine, Miss Smith. Is there anything you’d like to eat? I can order it for you right now?"
Isabel hurriedly shook her head, saying, "No."
"Oh." Lily Adams acknowledged, then pressed the service bell on the table and asked the waiter to bring some water.
Percy and Edward Shaw continued discussing work. After the embarrassment she had just caused, Isabel did not dare to let her mind wander again. Even though her stomach still ached, she forced herself to concentrate.
However, Percy frequently turned his head, stealing glances at Isabel from time to time.
Isabel couldn’t tell if Percy’s gaze was reproaching her for spacing out earlier or if there was something on her face. Feeling uneasy under his constant scrutiny, she turned her head away, avoiding his gaze.
