Chapter 231: Chapter 243: The Poisonous Mango (12)

The autumn in Bellshire was exceptionally short; just a few days into autumn, more than half of the leaves in the city had already fallen, and the temperature dropped rapidly.

In the following week, Isabel Smith had been busy with her work at Smith Corporation.

Evelyn Osbert, since the incident at Elijah Smith’s birthday banquet, had indeed stopped causing minor troubles for Isabel Smith.

Life had been relatively smooth and uneventful.

The ninth day after Elijah Smith’s birthday was Isabel Smith’s birthday, which happened to fall on a weekend.

That day, Isabel woke up very early. Before the sky was bright, she crawled out of bed, took a bath, and put on the black clothes she had prepared the day before. Then, she went downstairs and headed to the Flower Market.

Isabel picked a large bunch of chrysanthemums and some carnations. After paying for them, she held the flowers and went to the suburban cemetery.

Ever since her parents passed away on the day of her coming-of-age ceremony at eighteen years old, she hadn’t been able to return from the United States to attend their funeral.

The outside world only knew that her parents died one day, half a year later. Little did they know that her birthday was actually the day her parents passed away.

Isabel’s parents were buried in a cemetery on a hillside. The elderly caretaker who watched over the cemetery was hard of hearing. When Isabel arrived, the cemetery gates were still closed, so she shouted outside for quite a while before the old caretaker came out with the keys, hands behind his back, and opened the gate for her.

Isabel carried the flowers she had bought, walking step by step up the hill along the neatly stacked green stone steps.

The hill was not high; it took her about half an hour to reach her parents’ grave. Perhaps because no one had visited it for so long, the ground was covered with weeds and fallen leaves, making it look somewhat desolate.

Isabel stood in front of the tombstone, mustering the strength to walk up and kneel down, pulling out the weeds surrounding the tombstone one by one.

While pulling the weeds, Isabel didn’t dare to look up at the words etched on the tombstone or the photos hanging on it. She just kept her head down, silently pulling weeds. As she kept pulling, tears began to fall from her eyes.

Some sadness, like a long-held torrent, once unleashed, becomes unstoppable.

Once Isabel’s tears began to fall, she couldn’t control them anymore. In the end, she suddenly burst into tears, like a helpless child.

It took Isabel a long while to stop her tears. She sniffed, turned her head, and placed the two bouquets she had bought into the flowerpots in front of the tombstone.

Isabel still kept her eyes lowered, kneeling silently in front of the tombstone. After a long time, she gathered the courage to slowly lift her head and look at the two black-and-white photos on the tombstone.

In the photos, her father and mother appeared very young. Her mother seemed to be wearing a dress with a large black bow at the neckline, and her slightly curly hair was combed up neatly and tied quietly at the back of her head. Like her father, her mother’s face was bright with a radiant smile, showing a row of neat white teeth.

"Isabel, my little darling, Dad’s here to rescue you—"

"Isabel, have you finished your homework? How come you’re out here watching TV again?"

A loving father and a strict mother, a warm and happy family.

That was once her most beautiful haven.

But now, her greatest support and warmth was separated from her by life and death.

As Isabel thought about it, her tears couldn’t help but fall again. Her hand clenched into a fist with great effort, and she whispered softly, "Father, Mother, I’m here to see you.."

Although she knew that the dead had no consciousness, she still wanted to tell them many things; last night, Isabel thought of many words to tell her parents, about grievances, sadness, and longing.
