Chapter 213: Chapter 225: Exchange of Venue (2)
Percy Stanton admitted that when he heard his son say these things, he felt uncomfortable and somewhat amused. But more than that, he was envious.
He envied that he couldn’t be like Raymond Thompson, a child who could blurt out the unspoken words in his heart without any restraint. Even if he said something excessive, Isabel Smith wouldn’t get angry and turn her face away. At most, she would think it was just childish innocence and even find it adorable.
Some words have always been on the tip of his tongue, but somehow, he could never tell them to the person he wanted to.
Was it a matter of face? Pride? Or was he resentful of Isabel Smith’s irresponsible departure six years ago without saying goodbye?
Percy couldn’t quite figure out which reason it was. Perhaps it was all of them, or maybe love itself is a game of chess, where the one who falls in love first loses. In this game between him and Isabel, he had always defended while she attacked. Before they even had a chance to exchange moves, he surrendered, losing miserably. In the end, she just shrugged it off and disappeared without a trace.
Six years later, she came back with grace, as if yesterday’s past events were constantly replaying in his world, while she remained calm, composed, and indifferent.
Every time he thought about this, Percy would feel particularly unbalanced in his heart. Why was it that during these six years, she had stirred up his heart, getting him caught up in longing and unable to extricate himself, while she could live so refreshingly beautifully?
Why did her voice and laughter become clearer and brighter in his mind day by day, while after meeting him again, she seemed to have completely forgotten him?
Heh... Percy scoffed without any consideration for Raymond, who was diligently doing his homework beside him. Startled, Raymond’s pen quivered in his hand and fell to the ground with a ’plop’. Raymond raised his little head and carefully glanced at Percy twice. Then he sneakily bent down, crawled under the table to pick up his pen, took another cautious look at Percy, and quickly went back to doing his homework.
Percy stood by the desk, staring at Raymond until he almost finished his homework, then raised his head and glanced at the clock on the wall. It was 8:10 pm. He pointed at the bathroom and said, "Go brush your teeth and then sleep!"
Raymond didn’t dare to disobey and hastened to finish the remaining words. But who would have thought that the pencil would break with a ’snap’ as he applied too much force. He immediately raised his head, looked at Percy, and called out, "Father."
Percy cast an impatient look at his son.
Raymond held up the broken pencil for Percy to see. Percy muttered, "Such a hassle," but still took out a pencil sharpener and quickly sharpened the pencil for Raymond.
"Thank you, Father." Raymond took the pencil with a grateful smile and obediently finished the last two words. He got up immediately, kneeled on the chair, packed up his things, and then ran into the bathroom. After washing his face and brushing his teeth, he climbed into bed, covered himself tightly with a quilt, and closed his eyes obediently.
Percy stood by the bed, watching Raymond for a while before raising his head to look outside the window. After staring for a long time, he sighed with irritation and left Raymond’s room. He went to his study to read some documents but couldn’t focus on a single word. Finally, he stood in front of the window, smoking a cigarette for a while but felt even more stifled. He simply grabbed his keys and went to Isabel Smith’s apartment next door.
Isabel Smith had just taken a bath and was lying in bed watching a variety show. Percy couldn’t understand what was so interesting about such shows, but when he pushed open the bedroom door, Isabel’s smile was genuine and beautiful. However, when she saw him, her smile turned into her usual elegance and courtesy. She slowly sat up in bed, turned down the volume of the TV, and asked, "Has Raymond gone to sleep?"
Percy didn’t speak but just glanced at Isabel and took off his coat. He carelessly threw it on the sofa, lifted the quilt, and lay down.
