Chapter 210: Chapter 222: Lovers Also Have Self-esteem (7)
Raymond’s slightly downcast face immediately brightened, grabbing Isabel’s hand and swiftly closing the co-pilot’s seat car door before opening the back car seat door for Isabel. He climbed into the car first, patted the seat beside him for Isabel to sit, and only then did he call out to Percy in the front, who clearly wasn’t pleased that Isabel was sitting in the back with Raymond: "Father, we can start the car now!"
Percy gave a light "humph" before starting the engine and driving onto the road with a hint of displeasure.
The atmosphere inside the car wasn’t so tense anymore with Raymond present, as he became quite the chatterbox whenever he was with Isabel. During the drive, he entertained her with various stories about things that happened in school. When talking about his role as an academic representative in his class, Isabel complimented him: "Raymond, you’re so amazing, being the academic representative!"
Raymond’s face flushed as he raised his head and tousled his hair.
It was at this moment that Percy, who was driving at the front and had been ignored by the other two in the back, suddenly chimed in with a chilly remark: "Being an academic representative, yet still being punished to recite ’The Peasant’s Pity’ ten times."
Raymond’s face puffed up instantly.
Isabel had always been submissive to Percy, acting as the perfect romantic partner. However, for some reason, when she heard Percy belittle Raymond, she felt displeased. Her protective instincts were activated, and without thinking, she frowned, lifted her head, and glared at Percy through the rearview mirror, saying with an arrogant and displeased tone: "Percy, how could you speak to Raymond like that!"
For the first time in his life being "mistreated" by his father and having someone backing him up, Raymond straightened his back, looked at Isabel, and complained: "Sister Isabel, you don’t know, my father often mistreats me like this."
Percy moved his lips in a threatening and warning tone: "Raymond!"
"Sister Isabel———" Raymond lifted his head, looking at Isabel expectantly, and snuggled closer into her arms.
Seeing his small action, for some unknown reason, Isabel felt an overwhelming urge to protect him. Even though the child had no relation to her and she didn’t know where her protective instinct came from, she couldn’t resist it. So, without thinking, she called out to Percy: "Percy, if you don’t speak, no one will think you’re a mute!"
Percy turned his head and glanced at Isabel, who glared back at him unflinchingly, causing his expression to change. Eventually, he turned his head back to the road, raised an eyebrow, and, in a somewhat speechless manner, closed his mouth.
Then, the conversation between the two in the back seat continued without any dampening effect from Percy’s cold water: they became even more cheerful, to the point where Raymond opened his school bag to share his snacks. They ate and laughed as though he didn’t exist, or rather, as if they considered him a completely insignificant driver.
The more Percy thought about it, the more sullen he became. He lifted his head, looked through the rearview mirror to see the two in the back seat, and saw their faces close to each other, smiling as sweetly as can be.
Raymond even held out a chip for Isabel to eat, sweetly saying, "Sister Isabel, let me feed you."
"Thank you, Raymond." Isabel opened her mouth to accept the chip and, imitating Raymond, picked up a chip to feed him: "Raymond, let Sister also feed you."
