Chapter 32: Hands off
"What the hell are you doing?!" Athan shouted angrily. He was horrified to see Knox tied up like a criminal. Veins popped on his neck and he had the urge to smash the man’s face to the wall.
After more than ten minutes passed and Knox didn’t come back, he went to check on him, but then he saw him bolt out the door, and then followed by the man supposedly enjoying his engagement party.
He pushed Azrael, who stood as tall as him, out of the way and dared to rush to Knox’s side. However, the latter didn’t even budge and only glared at Athan coldly.
"Don’t interfere," Azrael said through gritted teeth, he pushed Athan back without any consideration of his position at all.
Since Athan was near the stairs, with a single step he took backward caused by Azrael’s forceful push, his balance was lost and his vision turned up. He was falling!
Fortunately, Athan’s quick reflexes and alert mind saved him. He quickly grabbed the railing and slid off a few steps. His arm twisted and his palm heated from the friction of his tight grip and the metal railing. But none of that mattered to him.
The anger boiled inside Athan from witnessing Knox in that state turned into contempt and disgust. How could someone commit a crime with a poker face like that? If he hadn’t grabbed the railings, his head would have been cracked below. Yet, the man remained expressionless and unregretful!
Athan quickly got up and without hesitation, threw a punch in Azrael’s direction. "What did you do to him?!"
Azrael, as skilled as he was in fighting like a thug, easily dodged the punch and threw a hook on Athan’s left side. Athan blocked the attack with his folded elbow. Then, using his other hand, he hurled a fast jab with a fist clenched and landed directly on Azrael’s jaw.
Azrael staggered. He spat on the floor and gave Athan a powerful side-kick. He then said with a threatening voice, "That’s none of your business. Get lost."
Athan failed to dodge and was thrown near the unconscious Knox. His shoulders hurt from the kick. He coughed and groaned, then he glared at Azrael, "You...!"
However, instead of getting up and fighting back, he moved to Knox and checked his breathing. How dare he fight with that madman first rather than check on Knox? Athan scolded himself.
He sighed in relief after feeling his pulse, though it was shallow, yet his heart was beating rapidly. He turned his back on Azrael and untied the neckties on Knox.
A hand gripped his shoulders followed by a thunderous voice, "Don’t touch him."
Athan slapped the hand away and gathered Knox in his arms. Azrael growled, "I said don—
Athan growled back even louder, "You’re a f*cking madman! He lost consciousness already, but you still want to continue fighting?! I need to take him to the hospital, you bastard. If something happens to him, I’m going to hunt you down, Del Valle. I don’t care how mighty your name is, I’ll rip it out from you, you mother**cker!"
He stood with Knox in his arms and walked down, but before he disappeared from the door, Athan looked back and gave Azrael a warning look, "And Knox is my business," he said, emphasizing the last word.
With that, Athan disappeared and Azrael was left speechless. He stood there with a clenched fist and troubled face for a while, until someone from below came up and called him.
"Sir! Where have you been?! The guests are starting to wonder where you are, and Ms. Diva is also looking for you. You have to come back now, sir," Luis, Azrael’s secretary, suggested in panic.
’People are starting to speculate and rumors are already circulating, right on the day of his engagement party,’ Luis thought. ’But the man he chased looked familiar...don’t tell me...’
The secretary’s thoughts were cut off by the loud sound of a door closing. He frantically followed his boss and pointed out his disheveled look. But Azrael did not give a damn. His eyes were focused but not on anything present in his surroundings.
The words Athan spew kept ringing in his ears. Knox lost consciousness, and he did nothing.
As soon as Azrael stepped inside the hall again, all heads turned in his direction. But none dared to ask or approach him, as his expression was completely opposite from the cordial attitude he showed at the beginning of the party.
Now, no one can see any speck of faux kindness in those eyes. His aura wasn’t welcoming but spoke of danger instead. Every step he took, one guest would walk and move away from his path, as though they didn’t want to get tangled with a walking disaster.
Azrael walked with that scary look to Diva, but the latter was unfazed. He stood beside her without a word and even ignored the constant glares from his father who sat on the front table. His mind wasn’t in the party but went with Athan and Knox instead.
He wanted to end the gathering as soon as possible, but the oldies were monitoring them. Azrael mumbled to himself, "This is the worst."
To which Diva caught on. She observed Azrael and calmly probed after, "Is that him? The reason why you kept insisting to cancel this engagement?"
Azrael furrowed his brows. He was annoyed and didn’t want to speak to anyone, but there were many eyes watching, so he answered reluctantly, "...no."
Diva briefly chuckled a smug look on his face, "Yeah? Guess he was just a passing entertainment to you then. I almost thought you were ready to throw everything away from the way you desperately dashed and chased him."
"Shut. Up."
Diva patted him on the back, "I’m just saying this as a friend, Azrael. Not everyone can understand the responsibilities we have as the only child of a conglomerate family, and that kind of family won’t even try to understand their children.
"They always opt for what’s best for this and that, but never for us. They’ll go extreme and exterminate any virus bugging their system in any way possible for them. So...if you can’t protect the bugs, don’t attract them."
Diva’s face turned grim after spotting a woman making her way to them. She rolled her eyes and added, "I guess shits can’t stop attracting bugs after all, huh."
The woman reached them and smiled at Azrael, but did not even glance at Diva. Her hair was blonde and reached up to her waist. She has a slender and delicate body, with skin as white as snow, and a small face.
Her rose-tinted cheeks raised as her pinkish and plump lips grew into a wide smile. She raised her glass to Azrael and timidly greeted him, "Congratulations on your engagement, Azrael."
Azrael answered nonchalantly, "Yeah. Thanks."
"I was surprised when you suddenly ran out," the beautiful woman giggled, "I thought that you were finally canceling this party. For a moment, I had hope."
Diva snickered. She can’t just believe the woman said that right in front of his fiancée.
The woman looked at Diva with an innocent questioning look, so Diva returned it with a fake smile, "I just got engaged as well, Elise, won’t you congratulate me? Aren’t we friends?"
Elise, a dominant omega and the daughter of the vice president of Idol Entertainment, awkwardly smiled and bowed her head to Diva, "Of course. Congratulations, Diva. I didn’t expect that you would still talk to me, so I avoided looking at you in case you felt uncomfortable because of my presence."
Diva’s smile grew wider, "Why would I feel uncomfortable? We used to spend every day together before. There’s nothing to worry about a small fight."
Azrael eyed his fiancée who was obviously faking her expression. But Elise was clueless, so she beamed upon hearing those reassuring words. She smiled at Diva kindly and expressed her gratitude modestly.
A hand suddenly grabbed Azrael’s shoulders which caught the two ladies’ attention. Rian came and leaned over Azrael’s shoulders while acting coquettishly. He popped his lips and spoke, "Hm? Ladies, don’t fight over this man. He’s already taken."
Rian’s lean figure was thrown after Azrael elbowed him and patted his shoulder. He laughed and pointed at the round table where their families were talking, "They were asking for you."
Without a word, Azrael just gave his glass to Rian and went over. Ignoring Elise’s pouted lips and regretful glances.
Elise then looked back at Rian and asked seriously, "Is that a joke?"
Rian, "What?"
"Azrael’s taken, not by her?" Elise pointed at Diva who just folded her arms and listened to them with a raised eyebrow.
It was obvious that Elise was fishing for information. So, Rian hesitated. Elise rolled her eyes at him and added, "Why did I even bother asking? Of course, that was a joke. Azrael is so pitiful. You guys are guarding him and not letting him meet other people, especially you."
The last words were directed to Diva. Diva just casually sipped wine from her glass and shrugged her shoulders at Elise.
Elise frowned, "You think he’ll last with you? Don’t dream. Dominant alphas like Azrael have natural instincts to mate with dominant omegas. An alpha and alpha together are just...gross."
With that, she turned around and left. Rian gaped at Diva and incredulously asked, "I’m speechless. Did she really think we’re keeping Azi to us? No way. And girl is speaking as if she was born an omega. It’s funny, hahaha."
Kayden approached them and chipped in, giving Diva a side glance, "That’s why I warned you to stop showering her with pheromones before. She might look arrogant rather than depressed, but there’s no way her body isn’t experiencing malfunctions."
Rian, "Isn’t that what Diva intended to do? But now that Elise turned into an omega, she no longer wants you. Oh, wait, even if she was a beta before, her eyes were always focused on Azi. So, I guess-
Pak!
Rian folded from the stinging pain in his back. He glared at the striker, but Diva was already walking away. While Kayden gave a concerned look at Elise who was talking with other females away from them, and shook his head in pity.
She was a beta before but had more chances, but now, being an omega, no matter how dominant she is, Azrael won’t touch even her split ends anymore.
