Chapter 1608: Chapter 1608: Han Ping Gets Married 2
Lu Jiang didn’t rush to pay because he knew that since Han Ping was getting married, he and his wife would definitely prepare a wedding gift to bring over. Plus, breakfast for three was just a few bucks, which wasn’t an issue for Han Ping.
Last year, Feng Qingxue bought a lot of things with foreign exchange certificates, keeping a large portion to give as gifts; none of them were cheap.
Wucheng is located north of the Great Wall, bordering Inner Mongolia, with a food taste close to the Northeast and Inner Mongolia. Lamb hand meat, smoked meat, and mare’s milk wine are specialties, all available in state-run restaurants, but breakfast certainly doesn’t include these things, instead offering buckwheat noodles, buns, fried dough sticks, tofu skin, and the like.
Feng Qingxue ate the buckwheat noodles while listening to Lu Jiang and Han Ping chat about everyday things, mainly inquiring about the border defense forces and those who retired from the military at the same time as Han Ping.
Though people leave, their hearts remain there.
The old unit, old comrades, are always worth cherishing for any soldier.
"Wu Heng retired, Sang Hong also retired, and Xiao Wang, who used to sell stuff at the service club, also retired. When he retired, he still missed the leaders, his wife, and Xibao. However, we didn’t retire at the same time; Sang Hong and I retired together. Comrade Qi Gang retired, Wan Xinguo transitioned careers, Gao Yuzhu got promoted and stayed in the military, Commander Su and Commander Zhao both got promoted, as did Chief of Staff Shang. Sister Sanbao wanted to retire but couldn’t manage it, and Comrade Hen Xiangqian got promoted too but wasn’t restored to his original position, as the military hasn’t forgotten the trouble he caused before."
Ye Zhengjun also got promoted this year, but Han Ping probably didn’t know, so he didn’t mention it.
Unknowingly, several years have passed. Those who were meant to be promoted got promoted; those meant to retire, retired. Every year, new recruits are assigned there. By now, a significant portion of the soldiers in the current border defense forces are probably unfamiliar to Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue.
If there were a phrase to describe this, it would probably be "things remain, but people change."
"What about Jiang Wei?" Feng Qingxue remembered Jiang Xiaoyue’s nephew.
Han Ping thought for a moment, "He’s quite driven, knowledgeable, and literate. His knowledge reserves are ample, and everyone in the military says he has the demeanor of a General. By the time I retired, he was already a company commander, with a bright future ahead."
Having talent and family background, his future isn’t something they could imagine, so naturally, they wouldn’t feel it’s unfair.
In the military, it’s real skills that matter. Lu Jiang also didn’t have a family background and was affected by his family’s status, yet he became the youngest military district commander since the founding of the nation. So having solid skills is most important.
Feng Qingxue then asked about Yang Fengying, Fang Ning, Du Xiaotao, Jin Zhuzhu, and others. Han Ping, as if pouring beans from a bamboo tube, reported everything: "Du Xiaotao and Jin Zhuzhu both have several children now, but Comrade Jin Zhuzhu lost one child, a boy, nearly cried both to death. Sister Tian Ling also had a son. Comrades Yang and Fang have no children yet, but judging by Chief of Staff Shang and Deputy Commander Qiao’s attitude, they aren’t in a rush. However, when I retired, Comrade Yang’s family matriarch was already having her take care of her health."
Feng Qingxue listened without speaking.
Even if they immediately got pregnant, Yang Fengying and Fang Ning would be considered older mothers, and it’s uncertain if they could conceive.
After finishing breakfast and getting Han Ping’s address, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue wandered around the city, both to aid digestion and to enjoy some quiet time together, even if they seemed foolish to others.
Going out for a walk in the heavy snow, isn’t that kind of crazy?
Lu Jiang shook off the snow from the umbrella, "We’ve been walking for over half an hour. Where do you want to go?"
Since arriving in Wucheng, Feng Qingxue had been staying on the base, only occasionally coming into the city to pick up Luo Xiuxiu, so she was unfamiliar with Wucheng. Thinking for a moment, she replied honestly, "I don’t know where to go either. Where do you think we should go?"
