Chapter 144: Chapter 0144: Running Away From Home 4_1

The Lu family is related to the Guan family and had some responsibility to take care of Feng Qingxue and her brother when their mother in Guan Cheng abandoned them. Feng Qingxue is sympathetic towards the two helpless children. If she wasn’t sympathetic, she wouldn’t have taken on so many responsibilities. She lost count of how many people she had saved while she was out.

After confirming the exact address of Guan Cheng and Guan Yu, and asking their father for evidence to prove their identity to Guan Cheng, she finally left after dinner and cleaned up the kitchen.

Upon leaving the cowshed, she didn’t head straight home, but instead went to Wang Zhenguo’s house.

Visiting the Wanglou Brigade without stopping by her uncle’s house felt unusual.

However, upon arrival at Wang Zhenguo’s house, she found the door locked and the neighbours didn’t know where the Wang family had gone. All they could tell Feng Qingxue was, "They might have gone to visit relatives."

It was quite common to visit relatives when there was no farming work to be done.

Feng Qingxue then went to her aunt’s house. Her aunt was just selecting wild vegetables in the sun at the courtyard gate. Seeing the two girls come over, she quickly waved her hands full of mud, "Qingxue, come in quickly!"

"Auntie, why is there no one at uncle’s house?" Feng Qingxue sat down to help select wild vegetables, busying herself while asking questions.

Wang Fengqiao looked around, then whispered, "I’m telling you this, but you mustn’t spread it."

"My lips are sealed, auntie. Just say what you need to say."

"Your cousin Wang Jiao from your uncle’s house doesn’t want to marry Zhang Yuejin, who has proposed to them. She’s been making a fuss about it. Your uncle and aunt are unwilling to indulge her anymore and have agreed to the proposal from the Zhang family. Jiaojiao was so angry that she ran away from home, stealing a stack of stamped letters of introduction and even taking away the money and valuables that your aunt had hidden away."

When she said "letters of introduction", Wang Fengqiao used the word "steal". And, when she mentioned the money and valuables, she was too embarrassed to say they were stolen, yet the word "took" could not hide the fact that Wang Jiao had indeed stolen them.

Even Wang Fengqiao was angered by the news. After all, Wang Jiao was her niece, and this would bring disgrace upon the family if it spread.

Although Wang Jiao had a slight temper before, she wasn’t a bad child. Now, however, she seemed to have changed completely. Wang Fengqiao felt relieved, thinking how lucky it was that Jiao Jiao had refused to marry Lu Jiang earlier. It would have been a disaster for the Lu family if a girl like her had married into their family.

Looking at her niece right now, Fengqiao was reminded of her niece’s filial piety and thought that her niece was indeed the better one.

Feng Qingxue was stunned after she heard her aunt’s words.

Wang Jiao had run away from home?

Feng Qingyun opened her mouth to say that Wang Jiao wanted to steal her own brother-in-law, hence her refusal to marry that butcher Zhang Yuejin. She wanted to call out her cousin in front of her aunt. But remembering the stern teachings of her sister, she quickly closed her mouth and lowered her head to choose vegetables, pretending she had heard nothing.

"So, my uncle and aunt are not at home because they went to look for my cousin," Feng Qingxue said, while wondering where Wang Jiao might have gone.

Would she have gone to find Lu Jiang? Although outsiders didn’t know the exact address of Lu Jiang’s army station, Lu Jiang had often sent letters, telegrams, and parcels in the past, many of which were received by Wang Zhenguo. So, it wouldn’t be strange if Wang Jiao knew the address.

Wang Fengqiao shook her head, "They must have gone looking for her, but I don’t know where they went."

After a pause, she continued: "When Jiaojiao would get angry in the past, she’d always run to her grandmother’s house. They probably went there this time too. Your aunt and uncle went to check on her. What can’t a girl say if she doesn’t want to get married? She really shouldn’t have run away from home!"
