Chapter 96: Capture The Betrayers.

"No!" Maya and Garvin screamed as the fiery creatures surged forward.

Just as Garvin was about to be swallowed whole by the wind-like monster’s gaping mouth, and Maya was moments away from being torn apart by the stone-like creatures, Larry and Ethan intervened. Using their earth elements, they created a barrier to block the monsters’ paths. However, the force of the monsters’ push caused the rope they clung to for balance to strain, dragging them closer to the creatures. Despite the overwhelming pressure, they fought back with every ounce of strength they had.

"Are you crazy?" Larry shouted, his voice tinged with both desperation and fury as his muscles strained under the immense force. "You’re really serious about this sacrifice shit?"

"Let them go, or you’re going to die with them," Ayra declared coldly, her tone sharp and unyielding as she stood nearby, watching Larry and Ethan struggle to save Garvin and Maya. Her arms were crossed, her stance calm as if she were merely observing a spectacle.

"I don’t want to die! Please, Larry!" Maya cried out, clutching Larry’s arm with trembling hands, her face streaked with tears. Her voice quivered with pure terror.

"That crazy bitch!" Garvin shouted, gripping Ethan’s hand tightly as if his life depended on it. His eyes darted between the monstrous figures and Ayra, who seemed unfazed by their plight.

"You said the monsters need to taste human flesh before they retreat, right?" Larry demanded, his gaze burning with a mixture of rage and determination as he stared at Ayra. His focus never wavered, even as the monsters beneath roared hungrily.

"Exactly," Ayra replied with a smirk that oozed malice. "Let the two of them go. They’re useless, anyway."

Before she could finish savoring her cruelty, Larry’s expression darkened. Summoning his fire element, he conjured a flaming blade and, without hesitation, struck Ayra down. The blade sliced through her with brutal precision, severing her body in half. She barely had time to register the attack before blood erupted from her split form, painting the ground in an horror splash of crimson.

"Damn it!" Maya cried out, turning away as she gagged at the gruesome sight. She shut her eyes, trying to block out the horror unfolding before her.

Ethan acted quickly, throwing half of Ayra’s body toward the wind-like monster and the other half to the stone-like creatures. The monsters immediately swarmed over the remains, devouring the flesh with feral intensity. Their growls and the wet, nauseating sound of chewing filled the air.

The strain on the rope reached its limit and snapped, sending the four of them tumbling to the ground. Maya collapsed, retching uncontrollably before her body finally gave out, and she fainted.

"Let’s move before they’re done," Ethan commanded, his voice firm as he wiped blood from his face. "They might be powerful, but they’re fools. This will buy us time."

Larry nodded in agreement, hastily helping Garvin, who was trembling uncontrollably, to his feet. Meanwhile, Ethan hoisted the unconscious Maya onto his back. Together, the four of them began navigating their way out of the forest.

Meanwhile, a piercing, otherworldly scream rang in Austin’s ears the moment Ayra fell. The sound reverberated through him, a clear signal of her demise.

"They killed her?" Austin muttered under his breath, his voice low but laced with anger. "They actually used her as the sacrifice?"

His fists clenched tightly, and his eyes burned with fury as he tapped on his earpiece. "Meet me at the forest," he ordered, his tone sharp and commanding. "Capture the betrayers. Alive."

"Yes, boss," a voice responded crisply through the earpiece before the connection was severed.

Austin began to move, leaving the dark cave behind. Scarlett and her group, unaware of his departure, remained hidden in one of the cave’s narrow openings.

Back in the Cave...

Scarlett, Kato, and Louise crouched in silence, their bodies pressed against the cold stone walls. They had turned invisible, relying on the shadows to hide them. The growls of the monsters echoed throughout the cavern, mingling with the eerie dripping of liquid that sizzled ominously as it hit the ground.

The group dared not touch the ground, as it was slick with a corrosive monster liquid that could dissolve even metal. They clung to ledges and outcroppings, their expressions grim.

"I don’t understand why I can’t awaken my monster form," Kato muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. He concentrated hard, but his body remained unresponsive to his efforts. "I feel so weak and miserable. Even my system isn’t responding. How is that possible? I thought our systems didn’t rely on any signals, but whatever is in this cave is proving me wrong."

Scarlett remained silent, her expression hard as she bit her lip in frustration. "At least you can usually awaken your monster form at will," she thought bitterly. "I can’t even channel mine, no matter how hard I try. It’s like something is suppressing it entirely."

"Are we just going to die here?" Louise croaked weakly, blood dripping from his lips. His pallor had worsened, his body trembling from the effects of the poison he had inhaled. "What kind of place is this? And what do you mean you can’t use your monster forms? What is happening?"

"Calm down, Louise," Kato replied, his voice steady but grim. "If you panic, the poison will spread faster. Scarlett tried removing it earlier, but you’ve been breathing it in this whole time. Unlike us, you’re fully human. Scarlett and I are half-monsters, so the poison doesn’t affect us as much. But even we’re struggling here. Whatever this cave is, it’s like it’s stripping us of everything that makes us powerful."

Scarlett sighed heavily, her shoulders slumping slightly as she glanced at Louise’s deteriorating state. "We need to figure out what’s happening before it’s too late. If this keeps up, none of us are making it out alive."

Louise’s eyes widened in alarm as he stared at Scarlett and Kato. "You mean... this cave is somehow suppressing your monster forms?" he asked, his voice trembling with fear.

Scarlett nodded grimly, her expression tight. "It seems that way. And if Kato can’t transform, we’re at a significant disadvantage. Talk less of me, my monster form comes and goes at will, and I can barely control it when it does."

Kato’s brow furrowed, his expression thoughtful. "I guess we’re this weak because we entered the cave as humans, untransformed, against these powerful monsters. Maybe if we had shifted into our monster forms before stepping in, it might have been a different story."

Louise coughed violently, specks of blood staining his lips. His face contorted in pain, and his voice was barely a whisper when he spoke. "I... I don’t know how much longer I can hold on." His eyes locked onto Scarlett’s, pleading for relief.

Scarlett’s hardened expression softened as she placed a comforting hand on Louise’s shoulder. "We’ll get you out of here, Louise. I promise," she said, her voice steady yet strained with determination. Without wasting time, she began using her water element, interwoven with fire, to extract the poison from Louise’s system. Her abilities felt unnervingly weak, which she suspected was another effect of the cave, but she pushed herself to continue.

"We can’t stay trapped in here forever," Kato said, his voice low and urgent. "If we linger too long, Louise will die. And Scarlett, I’m sure you don’t want that weighing on your conscience."

Louise stirred weakly, his eyes fluttering open as he drew ragged breaths. "How... how do we even leave?" he croaked. "If we step into that poisonous liquid, we’ll lose our legs, if not worse. And those monsters... the ones throwing fire... They’ll incinerate us the moment we leave this opening. It’s a dead end, isn’t it?"

Scarlett clenched her fists, frustration and anger burning in her eyes. I refuse to believe we’re trapped here forever, she thought to herself. Her gaze hardened as an idea began to form. Is it time...?

"What are you thinking about?" Kato asked, cutting into her whirlpool of thoughts. His tone was sharp, tinged with irritation. "Whatever you’re planning, share it with us. This isn’t the time for someone to space out."

Scarlett turned to him, her eyes blazing with determination. "You might have to fight with everything you’ve got to protect yourself and Louise once my invisibility skill wears off," she said firmly.

Kato scowled, his annoyance evident. "What do you mean? Can’t you maintain it anymore? And why are you pinning everything on me? We’ll all have to fight for our lives. Don’t dump the responsibility on me like I’m some kind of hero, you know I’m not the helping type."

"Trust me," Scarlett replied, her voice calm yet resolute. "Whatever I’m doing now, it’s for the best. Just make sure you and Louise survive until I get back."

Kato’s eyes narrowed. "What are you planning to do?" he asked, suspicion and concern creeping into his voice. "Where are you going?"

Scarlett didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stood and stepped out of the small hiding space where they had been concealed.

"Scarlett!" Kato called after her, his voice urgent yet hushed to avoid drawing the monsters’ attention. "What are you talking about? What are you planning to do?"

Scarlett’s thoughts churned as she gazed down at the bubbling, poisonous liquid flowing beneath her. Getting the SSS rank is the best idea after all, she thought. Once I have it, I won’t need to worry about losing control of my monster form. I’ll be able to transform at will, and no monsters or chosen members will have power over me anymore.

She swallowed hard, steeling herself for what was to come. "It’s just going to hurt for a while," she murmured under her breath.

Without another word, Scarlett stepped off the ledge and let herself fall into the monster liquid below.

"No!!!" Kato roared, his body moving with lightning speed as he lunged after her. He reached out, his hand outstretched, but it was too late. Scarlett plunged into the bubbling pool, the toxic liquid engulfing her instantly.
