Apocalypse: After Being Reborn, I Stocked Up on All Supplies -
Chapter 293 - Chapter 293 Chapter 291 The Window Period to Go to Mars
Chapter 293: Chapter 291: The Window Period to Go to Mars Chapter 293: Chapter 291: The Window Period to Go to Mars After a long and dimly lit tunnel, the carriage came to a stop at the end of the track.
Song Qian and Li Haoyang were the first to jump off.
Then came Mo Jingsheng, and lastly, Jiang Yan.
“Song Qian, is this the Underground Space Base?” Jiang Yan asked quietly.
“Yes. To be precise, it’s the National Manned Space Research Center.”
“Leader!” A group of warriors below, upon seeing Mo Jingsheng, quickly stood to attention and saluted.
Not far away was the customary dark red metal wall, within which one could see the Hive-like doors, hiding in plain sight.
There were no signs anywhere to be seen.
Armed warriors patrolled back and forth.
It was somewhat similar to the scene she had witnessed upon her arrival at Yaoben Base.
But it was even more strict here.
Even though it was Mo Jingsheng who was personally leading her, the routine checks that should occur on a daily basis were not omitted in the slightest.
“Sorry, ma’am, may I ask if you are carrying any flammable or explosive substances, controlled knives, or corrosive liquids?” one of the valiant female warriors approached with a metal detector in hand and asked.
“No.”
The warrior scanned her from head to toe, not even sparing her Martens boots, her gaze lingering on the black backpack behind Jiang Yan.
“Could you please open your bag for inspection then?”
Jiang Yan looked at Mo Jingsheng, who gave a slight nod.
“Sure.”
Jiang Yan took off her pack and unzipped it with ease.
Mo Jingsheng cast a casual sidelong glance, his brow slightly raised.
The bag of amoxicillin she had put back earlier had long since vanished without a trace.
It was clear that her way of handling matters was very cautious and careful.
Song Qian, worried that Jiang Yan might take offense to being checked alone, added,
“Every item here, every space scientist, including the astronauts, engineers, payload specialists, and so on, is the result of precious efforts and costs protected from before the apocalypse. Hence, they are more cautious and thorough.”
Jiang Yan nodded, “Yes, indeed, it’s not easy.”
After the check, the group was then led further into the Space Base by another warrior.
In contrast to the dimly lit exterior filled with rocky cliffs, this place was pristine, brightly lit, and radiating cleanliness.
It even gave Jiang Yan the illusion that she had returned to the world before the apocalypse.
After changing into new clothes and undergoing a full decontamination, they continued onward.
Jiang Yan didn’t quite understand why seeing a space scientist required Mo Jingsheng’s personal escort.
But she didn’t ask.
The group stopped in front of an office door.
Li Haoyang stepped forward and knocked gently, “Dr. Song.”
“Just a moment,” came the voice of a young man from inside.
Jiang Yan had seen Dr. Song Haitao in an interview on television before when he had just returned from space.
However, as time had passed and she had only glanced at it casually, her impression was vague and not deeply ingrained.
The four of them stood at the doorway for a moment.
Jiang Yan cast a sidelong glance at Mo Jingsheng.
He looked calm and composed, showing no signs of impatience or irritability.
After about half a minute, the office door creaked open.
The person who opened the door was a young man wearing a light blue lab vest.
He had monolids, small eyes–red and accompanied by dark circles–as if he hadn’t rested for several days, and his beard was unkempt.
Jiang Yan glanced at the man’s work badge, [Laboratory Assistant: Sun Ziqing]
Upon recognizing the visitors, his pupils shrank, and he stuttered politely, “Hello, Leader Mo!”
He immediately went on, “Leader Mo, Dr. Song and the others are calculating the latest cosmic window period. Please wait for a moment.”
Mo Jingsheng nodded slightly, indicating for them to continue with their work.
The group sat down on some nearby stools.
Not too far away, behind a glass wall, was a row of data display screens that Jiang Yan had only seen on television before, mostly showing images of celestial bodies.
Several people were busy working intensely.
Jiang Yan gently tapped Li Haoyang next to her and whispered, “What is a cosmic window period?”
He had been sharing space knowledge with her along the way.
She guessed that, in this regard, he knew more than Song Qian.
Li Haoyang covered his mouth with a hand, whispering back, “The most economic time period for launching a spacecraft or probe from our planet to Mars. Now that satellites and some electronic devices have failed, this calculation has become somewhat complex.”
“Generally speaking, 26 months is one cycle. The last cosmic window period seemed to be these past few days,” he added.
Jiang Yan frowned and responded with an “Oh.”
According to what Mo Jingsheng and Song Qian had said before, after five months when the extreme cold weather passed and the ice began to melt,
in 26 months, the journey to Mars would be possible.
That meant that the time allotted for “searching for treasure” was only 21 months.
However, the trip to Mars was only a last resort.
Because that would mean that the Catastrophe Simulation Laboratory, which destroyed the space station, had failed.
By that calculation, they were even more pressed for time.
This did not even include the time to travel to a different location and then return here…
