Chapter 203: Thanatos (2)

"But I can make you a sword using a piece of myself. Unlike Hephaestus’s sword, you will use death itself as your sword."

Atlas didn’t think much of these words and became happy, but the strange expressions on the faces of every god and goddess, including Nyx, were enough to tell him that something was wrong.

"Have you lost your mind?" Nyx asked her son, Thanatos.

Thanatos shook his head from side to side and said, "You’re placing your faith in Atlas, aren’t you, mother? I want to do the same... but in a slightly more extreme way."

"What’s going on?" Atlas asked suddenly, the joy on his face gone, replaced by a strange expression.

When Atlas asked this question, it was Selene who was speaking to him again. Atlas had grown accustomed to hearing the voice of the Ancient Goddess... Of course, he wasn’t complaining.

"This... is a bit complicated, dear Atlas. It’s really complicated," Selene said.

When Atlas heard these words, he shook his head and said, "I have time, my lady," indicating that he would listen.

Selene took a deep breath and said, "Alright...", and after Atlas’ words, she began to speak:

"When gods or goddesses seek to discover their divinity—that is, what they are the god or goddess of—they possess an abstract thought during this small inner journey. When their personal journeys come to an end, they manage to attain an essence. This essence becomes the concrete proof of their divinity. Examples of this include Zeus’s lightning bolt or Hades’s Kaynee."

"So, each of your stigmas is actually your essence? Your self being?" Atlas asked. His question was certainly reasonable. After all, when warriors were chosen, the stigmata bore the symbols of gods and goddesses.

"Yes, but no. We do not share our essences. If they fall into the hands of an evil person, it means our death. Our essence cannot be completely crushed by black magic, nor can white magic seduce them, but the pressure exerted on them can still break our sanctity, take away our immortality, and even cast us out of the sacred realm into heaven or hell." Selene replied.

When Selene finished speaking, Atlas paused for a few seconds and then turned to Thanatos, saying, "I cannot accept this, sir."

These words were, to put it bluntly, even crazier than giving up a part of Thanatos’ essence. After all, this weapon could truly make him immensely powerful. To simply reject a weapon that would never break, never scratch, and perhaps even make Atlas’ body stronger, and to do so solely for Thanatos’ sake...

Even the gods or goddesses would have been tempted to show their greed, so it was surprising that an ordinary human being would do such a thing.

It was enough to have a pair of eyes to understand that Atlas was not greedy.

"I insist," Thanatos replied.

"I must refuse your insistence, sir," Atlas said.

"If I didn’t trust you, I wouldn’t do this, of course," Thanatos replied.

"I must disappoint your trust," Atlas replied without a moment’s hesitation.

When Thanatos noticed this insistence, he fell silent, and for several minutes, no one spoke. It was clear that Thanatos was in the midst of a great storm of thought.

Just five minutes later, however, Thanatos snapped his fingers as if something had suddenly occurred to him.

"Snap!"

Immediately afterwards, he turned to Atlas with a smile on his face for the first time in a long time and said:

"What if I were to use only a very small part of my essence? I could use the sacred sword you hold as a base, meaning I would only alter the sword’s form and the power it holds. This way, I wouldn’t have to divide my essence, yet you would still be able to use the sword as if you possessed half of my essence. Using the sword this way will be much more difficult, since I won’t be sharing ownership of my essence, but if we’re talking about you here, I’m sure you can do it, young Atlas."

When Atlas heard these words, the first thing he did was turn to Nyx for approval. After all, if Nyx approved, it meant there was really no problem.

Seeing Nyx nodding her head up and down, Atlas said without hesitation, "If it won’t harm you and you think I can carry even a small part of your essence, I will do my best not to disappoint you, my lord."

Immediately after that, Atlas reached into his inventory. When he took out his sacred sword from his inventory, he bowed and respectfully extended the sword towards Thanatos from the bottom of the stairs.

When Thanatos took the sacred sword from Atlas’s hands with his magic, the sword began to glow. This glow was a shimmering black light. It could be described as an odd sight.

Atlas himself was aware of the immense power flowing into the sword. He could see it with his own eyes.

To be frank, it was truly a mesmerising sight. Thanatos touched different parts of the sword, and each part he touched changed, one by one, taking on a different shape.

After nearly ten minutes of waiting, everything seemed to be complete. When Thanatos stopped working on the sword, it was covered in a black layer... a colour. There was something that looked like a flower where the hilt was attached to the sword. It resembled a flower with thorns protruding outward.

The sword had become as thin as paper.

"It’s not stable," said Thanatos, looking at the gods and goddesses around him. It was clear that he was asking for help from someone.

Still, no help came. Thanatos, of course, accepted this with understanding. After all, entering into a relationship with the essence of another god or goddess could bring about their demise.

Nevertheless, after just a few glances, a man whom no one had expected appeared from among the crowd of gods and goddesses gathered behind Atlas.

When Thanatos saw the man, he did nothing but say, "I am honoured."
