Chapter 151: The three Duke daughters

Mia and Liana walked into Sofia’s room. They didn’t know why she had called them, but they came at the time she asked.

When they walked in, Sofia was in her bed looking at the window. She had left the door open for them, so they didn’t need to knock.

They shut the door after they came in, then they locked on Sofia.

"What did you call us for?" Mia asked, and though she wasn’t trying to be condescending, that part of her character remained with her.

"Yeah, I wanted to get some rest after classes," Liana said in an exhausted manner, her voice hinting that she absolutely didn’t want to be here.

"So I guess the act is only kept up when people are there to see," Sofia spoke. She stood up and faced them.

"We don’t have to force ourselves to be the three model daughters of dukes with good relationships when there is no one around.

It is already hard putting up the farce for the public eye. I don’t want to break myself by putting it up in private as well," Liana said.

Sofia smiled. She wasn’t one to talk as much as these two, and she loved being alone, but if there was one thing they had in common, it was that they never really cared about each other or even tried to.

Their outside look was a facade their families had forced on them to show the peace between all the Duke houses.

They could never really come to like each other. Their characters clashed every single time. The condescending Mia that felt she was above everyone—her gaze was always meant to make you seem smaller.

The proud and overly pretentious Liana, who acted like she was the first noble to exist, trying to be a perfect noble.

And the soft and quiet Sofia, who under it all simply despised people.

Three girls, three lives, but one misunderstanding. They never tried to find out why all of them acted the way that they did, and they didn’t have interest. After all, they didn’t need each other.

Sofia looked at the both of them. She could see the tired expressions in their eyes. They wanted to get out of here fast.

"I’ve made a decision concerning my engagement to Riven. I find him interesting, and that’s not something that happens to me a lot. So I wanted to make it clear that I’ll be keeping my engagement, and I’ll be getting closer to Riven," she said.

Her words sounded like a bomb to Mia and Liana. Their eyes widened.

"You have to be joking? You? You despise humanity and men especially. Why would you suddenly want Riven?" Mia asked.

"That? That’s none of your business, honestly. I discovered that I’m not repulsed by him, and honestly, I’m trying to know why," Sofia said.

"So this is not even about having feelings for him? You just want to use him to figure out your messed-up self?" Liana asked.

"Feelings? Emotions are lies that are spread by people who want to gain your trust. They build you up and make you believe that they are going to love you, and then they turn you into a tool to be abused and used.

And because you have become so dependent on them, it becomes extremely hard to break free. It’s a horrible feeling of sleepless nights and torturing pain. I’m telling you now, emotions are a cage," Sofia spoke, her voice quivering at the end. This was the most words she had spoken at one time.

"You are messed up, Sofia. You speak of emotions like a curse. And yet you want to do the same thing to Riven. Make him believe he is loved by you, while in reality, you are only trying to use him," Liana said.

"I have to agree with Liana on this one. Riven is not a tool for your games, Sofia," Mia said.

"Look at you two, all acting high and mighty. Don’t tell me you both have gotten feelings for the son of a baron?" Sofia asked. Looking at them, she saw a frown form on their faces. She smiled.

"The condescending queen Mia and the proud princess Liana, falling for Riven Grave. The same trash that you came and told us about, Liana. The same one you cursed and made a stupid bet with.

How fast did you fall? It was only a few months and your resolve wavered. What was it that made you fall? Was it the fact that he gave you the attention that no one else would—not your mother and not your father?" Sofia said.

"You bloody screwed bastard," Liana yelled, pulling her sword out, but before she could make a move, Mia stood in her way.

"Calm down, Liana. This is the academy. One wrong move and you’ll be punished. You should already know what Sofia is like. She never speaks, but when she does, she spits venom. Remember that," Mia said.

She managed to calm Liana down. Liana put away her sword, but the rage in her eyes was yet to be quenched. She stared daggers into Sofia.

Sofia turned to Mia, and with a smile she spoke, "Or you, did someone finally see your hard work? Did he see past your strong facade and touch the real you?

You are all so easy, falling in love with someone like Riven. I admit he is powerful and with a great future, but love is a barrier, stops you from seeing clearly. And I hope you all remember that we have a mission, and nothing is more important," Sofia said.

"Screw the mission. That is something the same senile old men that engaged us to Riven set up as well.

But all that aside, I want Riven as well, for my own personal reasons, and I’ll have him. There are still four years in the academy, and in that time, I’ll have him," Liana said and walked to the door.

"You two, in everything that you’ll do, none of you should end up hurting Riven, or you’ll answer to me," Mia spoke, her voice cold.
