Chapter 147: Two Letters, one night
Liana sat inside her room after the issue with Lance had been concluded. She faced the study table inside her room, and on the table was a letter inside a black envelope.
She had seen the envelope just outside her door when she had returned. It had been slid slightly under the door to show that it was for her.
The moment she laid eyes on the envelope, she knew who it was from, and she could already tell what it was about.
As she sat at the table, she stared at the letter. She stretched out her hands but stopped, fear evident in her eyes. She didn’t want to, but she didn’t have a choice.
Finally, she picked up the envelope and opened it. She pulled out the letter inside and unfolded it.
’My dear daughter Liana, it’s been a while.
I hope the academy has been treating you well. Though I heard what occurred in the academy, I’m sure that everything went fine.
Liana, you know Mummy loves you and wants what’s best for you, right? So I need you to read carefully what I have written down.’
Liana paused when she got to this point. She took a deep breath, as if trying to ready herself for what was to come next.
’It seems that we underestimated the son of the Riven family, the one your grandfather selected. My eyes in the academy relayed everything that has happened and all the details.
That Riven is a hidden gem, and his popularity is about to start shining. A potential genius like him can’t be left to the hands of fate—you have to grab hold of him and solidify your stance.
I’m sure those other two have also started planning on taking him for themselves. You must outsmart them and make yourself number one, so that you can tie him to our family.
I’m sure you are wondering why I’m eagerly pushing for you to be with him now—well, call it foresight. Someone that has the ability to rank first and also kill demonized easily in the first year is a real talent, one we cannot let slip away.
I’ve always trained you to be a good girl and capture opportunities whenever they came. So this is one. Fulfill your duties as the daughter of a duke and bring back the win.’
The letter came to an end there. A tear formed in Liana’s eyes and fell down to the paper, staining it.
She gripped the paper tighter, staring at the last words as if something else would pop up. ’So all she cares about are her schemes. She didn’t ask if I was fine after surviving such an attack. She didn’t care about my contribution.
She didn’t care that I killed demonized as well. Nothing I ever do is ever enough for her, no matter what I do or how I push myself.
She has blinded herself with another conquest, and now it’s someone that I don’t want to hurt. Riven, I really don’t want to use him as part of Mother’s plans.’ She squeezed the paper, throwing it to the corner.
She recalled the words she had heard over and over again since she was a kid that had created a strong hold on her.
"Mother knows best."
That line had been drilled into her so much as a kid that her life had lost its spark at one point. Her mind drifted to the times when she was younger. She ran through the garden, smiling and giggling.
The world still had some colors for her then, but then a shadow came from behind, and all the colors drained.
"Liana, what are you doing outside? Do you want to fall behind the other children of dukes when the time comes?
You must practice and listen to what I say if you are going to be the prodigy you were born to be. I know what is best for you, and I’ll not allow you to waste time with childish games. You were born for a far greater future," her mother said and grabbed her hand, pulling her away.
Her father was never around, traveling all around the kingdom to carry out many tasks and fight wars.
Liana stared at the paper in the corner of the room, her eyes glued to it for a few seconds. She said nothing, did nothing, just looked at it.
"Mother knows best," she muttered. "Mother knows best," she said again. She got up from the chair and walked to the paper. She picked it up and opened it again.
’Maybe, just maybe, if I can do this, Mother will finally see me as the daughter she wants. Just maybe, I can finally shine in her eyes,’ Liana thought.
"I’ll do my best, Mum," she said. She wiped the tears from the side of her eye, her gaze went cold.

In another room, Sofia sat down on her bed, book opened in front of her as she read. Suddenly, she heard a knock from her window. She walked to it as if she already knew what was coming and opened it. A white pigeon flew in and dropped a piece of paper in her hand.
She bowed to the pigeon after it came. She held the window open, and it flew out, pausing at the window for a few seconds.
"Glory to the goddess Lumis," Sofia said before the pigeon flew away, and she locked her window. She immediately opened the paper to see the content.
’Regardless of his actions, Lance remains the Chosen. As a disciple, you must work with him. Your father, the Duke, is a devotee, and so are you. Do not allow yourself to be swayed from the task at hand. You are the chaste and holy daughter of Lumis.’
She frowned when she read the content. The frown soon shifted to disgust. She squeezed the paper in her hand and threw it to the corner.
"I’m not doing any of that anymore. I’m only interested in Riven. Something tells me he will be more interesting to be with than a lousy Chosen," she said to herself.
