Chapter 517: The Tea Is Spilled
Gastone showered and cleaned himself before going out of the room. He felt the nostalgia hitting him hard as he looked at the walls in the hallways. They were renovated, but little was changed.
’I should keep my face hidden,’ Gastone thought as he put the hood over his head to prevent anyone from seeing them.
The idea made Gastone chuckle. Before, he was boasting about his appearance since he was popular among the nobles and even commoners, but now, he didn’t want to be seen by anyone.
As Gastone turned to a corner, a wolf was already waiting for him.
"My Lord," Fina, Rosina’s close servant, bowed her head slightly upon seeing Gastone. "I have been waiting for you."
Gastone stared down. He didn’t know who Fina was, but her face was familiar, as he didn’t remember Fina working in the Palace before.
"Okay," Gastone replied shortly.
Fina smiled and started walking ahead, guiding Gastone to the location where Rosina was waiting for him.
Gastone’s lips formed into a thin line as he stared at Fina’s back. Before, it was customary for servants to stay behind a royal member or any guests since their status was lower, but he didn’t say anything about the change.
They arrived in front of a large door. Fina opened it and revealed a decent-sized dining room with a round table in the middle.
Rosina was already sitting with a smile on her face.
"Gastone, have a seat," Rosina exclaimed, pointing at the chair beside her.
Somehow, Gastone felt uncomfortable and would rather sit far from Rosina, but no other chairs were around. He forced himself to sit beside her but kept his eyes down.
"How are you?" Rosina asked, starting the conversation.
"I’m fine, Your Majesty," Gastone replied flatly, still unable to meet Rosina’s eyes.
Rosina hummed in understanding. "As much as I like to hear you calling me by my title. I want you to use my name."
"I can’t do that," Gastone argued. He knew where he stood and didn’t want to cross the line.
"Haha, don’t worry about it. Think of it as we’re friends," Rosina explained, chuckling as she stirred her milk. "And it’s not asking for permission. It’s a command."
Gastone’s face hardened as he nodded in agreement.
"That’s great. Then call me by my name," Rosina teased, a sly smile on her lips.
Gastone breathed deeply. "R-Rosina."
"Ah, you’re so cute when you do that!" Rosina exclaimed, clapping her hands together.
Gastone remained silent as he waited for Rosina to speak. He had no energy to do anything but was thankful that the pain of a broken bond went away when he arrived at the werewolf realm.
"You still didn’t answer me, Gastone. How are you in the human realm?" Rosina asked, repeating her question.
Gastone hesitated, his eyes flickering to the side as he weighed his words carefully. "It was... different," he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I managed."
Rosina’s smile faded slightly, and she studied him with curiosity. "You don’t have to hide anything from me, Gastone. We’ve known each other for too long for that. Tell me the truth— what really happened out there?"
Gastone swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. He hadn’t expected this line of questioning, not from Rosina.
The memories of Gastone’s time in the human realm repeated in his mind, but he didn’t want to tell Rosina the important details, especially about Lucia.
Gastone glanced at Rosina and saw her gaze was consistent. He knew she wouldn’t let it go. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, feeling Rosina’s gaze piercing through him.
Seeing Gastone remain silent, Rosina couldn’t help but chuckle. "You’re cute. I wish you were like this before," she muttered, sipping her warm milk.
"What do you mean by that?" Gastone asked, looking at Rosina with a curious glance.
"Hmm, anyways... taste my tea. I grew it up in my garden," Rosina smiled, mind linking over to Fina to pour Gastone a cup.
Gastone watched as Fina poured him a cup of tea before leaving the room immediately, leaving them alone again.
"You really changed the rules of the Palace," Gastone commended as he took a sip.
"Just some of it that I don’t like," Rosina replied, smirking. She didn’t need a full bodyguard on her side most of the time since she could handle any enemy that came her way.
"I see," Gastone agreed, nodding his head.
Rosina leaned closer, a smirk laced on her lips. "Tell me, Gastone. Who is the lucky girl that made you change?" she questioned teasingly.
Gastone was taken aback by Rosina’s sentence that he spurt out the tea he had just drank. "What do you mean by that?" he asked quietly.
"Oh, come on. I already knew about your mate," Rosina rolled her eyes. She wanted to gossip about it, but Gastone was making it hard for her.
Gastone wiped his lips, looking down at the mess he had made on the table. Lucia’s face appeared in his mind, and the memories they shared, especially the intimate ones, but it didn’t give him any pleasure. Instead, it was painful for him to remember.
"It’s not something I can easily talk about," Gastone finally said, his voice measured, trying to maintain an air of calm. "Things were... complicated."
Rosina’s eyes narrowed slightly, her expression softening as she reached out, placing her hand over his. "Complicated, how Gastone? You can tell me; I can help," she replied sincerely.
Gastone pulled his hand away subtly, clasping his hands in his lap instead. "I appreciate that Rosina, truly. But some things are better left unsaid."
Rosina leaned back in her chair, her smile returning, though it didn’t reach her eyes this time. She could feel Gastone’s pain seeping out of his pores and guessed something might had happened between him and his mate.
"I understand. I know you don’t want to share, I won’t press you— just know that I’m here if you ever need to talk," Rosina stood up from her seat, facing Gastone. "Also, this house is built for you. Use it well."
