Chapter 515: The Howl of a Broken Bond
Gastone went back to his house beside the restaurant. He was sweating furiously even though the cold air hit his skin.
"Oh, goddess!" Gastone exclaimed, wiping his sweat while trying to relax his heartbeat.
It took Gastone a lot of strength to drive back safely, even though he was experiencing the pain and shock from the broken bond.
"Ugh," Gastone groaned, clenching his chest as the sound of his heartbeat was loud enough to be heard.
Gastone stumbled through the front door of his house, his breath ragged, his body trembling. As he entered, he collapsed into the nearest chair, gripping the edge of the table to steady himself as another wave of agony coursed through him.
"This is f^cking horrible," Gastone gritted his teeth as he tried to focus, to center his thoughts, but all he could feel was the sharp, stabbing pain in his chest and the hollow emptiness that seemed to spread from the core of his being.
"So this is what a broken bond feels like," Gastone chuckled. He grabbed a nearby, almost half-emptied bottle of red wine and chugged it in, hoping it would ease the pain a little.
Gastone’s hands were shaking. He could barely make a fist. He knew he needed to calm down, to think rationally. But his thoughts were scattered, disjointed, like fragments of a shattered mirror.
"This wine did nothing," Gastone grumbled angrily as he threw the bottle away, shattering it to pieces. Then, he reached for the small glass of water he always kept on the table, but his hand was unsteady, and the glass tipped over, spilling its contents onto the floor. He cursed under his breath.
Gastone forced himself to take a deep breath, then another. "I need to shift." He immediately grabbed his keys, entered his car, and drove as fast as he could to the forest
"Ah! It hurts!" Gastone’s heart pounded like a drum as he sped through the dark, winding roads leading to the forest. His vision was blurred with pain and a deep sense of loss, but he couldn’t afford to stop.
Gastone ignored the warning signs on the side of the road and continued driving. The forest loomed ahead, a dark silhouette against the moonlit sky. He barely slowed down as he reached the deeper dirt path into the woods.
Gastone’s car bounced violently over the uneven ground, but he didn’t care. The trees closed around him, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers, but he was determined. He had to shift.
It was the only thing that could help Gastone now.
When he reached a small clearing, Gastone tried to hit the brakes, but his foot missed, causing his car to hit the nearby tree terribly.
"Ah!" Gastone screamed as the impact was strong, but he managed to stay in his seat. He stumbled out of the car, almost collapsing to his knees as a fresh wave of pain tore through him.
Gastone didn’t care if his car was wrecked. All he could focus on was the pain he felt. His breath came in ragged gasps, his hands clutching his chest as if he could physically hold his broken heart together.
"Goddess..." Gastone whispered as he slumped to the ground. He rolled up front and stared at the moon shining above the sky. "Why did you give me a human mate?"
A single tear fell from Gastone’s eyes. A part of him blamed the Moon Goddess for what he was going through.
Gastone’s fingers dug into the dirt. He could feel the bond, or rather the absence of it— a gaping wound in his soul where there once was warmth, connection, and strength. The loss was suffocating, unbearable.
"I can’t... I can’t do this," Gastone muttered, his voice breaking.
For the first time in Gastone’s life. He was seeking help. He wanted someone to be there for him throughout his suffering.
Gastone knew he had to shift to let his animal side take over. The shift would allow his mind to quiet, the pain to dull. He closed his eyes, trying to summon the change. His muscles tensed, his skin prickled, but the pain in his chest flared, making him lose focus.
"Damn it!" Gastone shouted into the night, his voice raw with frustration and anguish.
Gastone took another deep breath, fighting against the instinct to collapse. He reached deep within himself, seeking that primal part of him that he had always controlled, always kept at bay. Now, he needed it more than ever. He needed to escape the torment.
With a guttural growl, Gastone finally let go. His body began to convulse, his bones shifting, reshaping. It was painful, more painful than it had ever been before, but he welcomed it.
Gastone welcomed anything that could replace the agony of the broken bond.
A few moments later, Gastone had been kneeling, and a large, beige fur with a brown tail stood. Its chest heaved with every breath, its eyes glowing with a mix of sorrow and rage.
The wolf stood there momentarily, panting, its ears twitching at every sound of the forest.
"Awoo!" the wolf’s head tilted back, and a long, mournful howl filled the night air, echoing through the trees. It was a cry of loss, anguish— a cry to the moon above, to the broken bond.
’I’ll let you roam free... for now,’ Gastone’s thoughts rang into the wolf’s ears as his consciousness sank deeper. He let his wolf take over his body as he wanted to rest, even for a few hours.
After a moment, the wolf lowered its head and began to move. It needed to run, lose itself in the forest, and outrun the pain that gnawed at its heart. Its paws thudded against the earth, its breath steaming in the cold night air.
"Rawr!" the wolf roared at any animals it encountered, asserting its dominance.
The wolf ran through the dense underbrush, over fallen logs and rocky terrain for hours. It ran until its muscles burned, and its lungs ached for air until it could no longer tell if the wetness on its fur was sweat or tears.
