Chapter 476: The Wink

The food arrived with the order Daniel made for them.

"I notice you like eating meat a lot," Lucia commented after seeing her plate, which was the same as Daniel’s.

"Ah, yes. Meat is great here," Daniel replied with a chuckle.

"Hmm, what other kinds of meat have you eaten before?" Lucia asked as she started slicing her meat into pieces. She acted as if it was just part of their conversation but was already gathering information.

Daniel paused and frowned. "Hmm, a lot," he replied shortly.

"Oh," Lucia forced a smile. She wanted to hear a specific answer instead. She started eating, and somehow, the way it tasted seemed familiar.

"Is it too salty for your liking?" Daniel asked after seeing Lucia’s expression of distaste.

"Ah, I can say it’s too much spice," Lucia giggled. It was delicious, but the seasonings were too much for her.

"Yeah, haha. It’s better than a bland food. Anyways, try it with mashed potatoes," Daniel recommended, pushing the bowl toward Lucia.

"Thank you," Lucia replied and followed what Daniel said. It lessened the flavor but was still there, creating an enjoyable taste. "It’s delicious," she stated.

"Yup, their dessert might be too sweet for you, but I can ask the chef to lessen the sugar for you," Daniel chuckled while shaking his head in amusement.

"Okay," Lucia smiled and continued eating.

After that, both remained silent, and the only sounds that echoed were their utensils scratching the plates.

Then, after five minutes. A young man appeared and sat where the piano was located. He played a soft song tone for them.

On the other hand, Lucia was getting anxious. She was waiting for Daniel to start a conversation without her initiating it to make it look like she wasn’t prying at his life.

But Daniel was enjoying his food and watching nature at the same time.

"You’re tense. Relax a bit; I won’t do you harm," Daniel stated and turned to look at Lucia.

"O-oh, haha. Am I?" Lucia was stunned and tried to play it cool. She patted her cheeks to wake herself up and sighed deeply. "Sorry, I’m just nervous," she replied and giggled.

"It’s alright," Daniel replied. He wiped his mouth with a cloth and called the waiter. He ordered a dessert without asking Lucia what she wanted.

After the waiter was gone, Daniel’s attention went to Lucia, who was still eating. "Where do your parents work?" he asked without hesitance.

Lucia nearly choked in surprise, but she composed herself. She had prepared for any possible query Daniel might ask on their date.

"Hmm, it’s not really a comfortable topic," Lucia replied and put an uneasy expression.

"I’m sorry, you don’t have to answer," Daniel hurriedly backed away, worried he hit a sensitive spot.

"It’s alright," Lucia smiled. "My parents are divorced and living with their own families. I grew up with my grandparents, but they died. So I’m living alone now. My background isn’t that great, Sir Daniel," she stated softly.

Lucia created a fake scenario where it was terrible that Daniel would never ask her again. At the same time, it also gave him space to tell his tragic story.

"Condolences, and I’m sorry for opening up this topic," Daniel replied with guilt.

"It’s alright," Lucia brushed it off and continued eating, but she could see the guilt on Daniel’s face, which made her giddy.

"I think I should tell you my background as well," Daniel whispered hesitatingly, scratching his head.

"Aww, that’s so nice, but I don’t want you to tell me if you’re not ready. It’ll make me sad," Lucia replied, giving Daniel a pitied look.

"A-are you sure?" Daniel asked. He frowned but felt relieved.

"Yes, of course! It’s not like you have a dark past, Sir Daniel," Lucia replied slowly, trying to test the waters to see how he would react to her triggered words.

Daniel flinched and looked offended. "No! I have!" he shouted and slammed his hand over his chest.

Lucia gasped falsely. "I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t expect someone of your status to suffer something in your past. I’m sorry," she whispered and lowered her head.

"It’s okay... It’s different from yours," Daniel sighed and slumped in his seat.

"Hmm," Lucia hummed. She kept tapping on her foot, eager for Daniel to start storytelling.

Silence engulfed the two of them, and it was extremely awkward.

By then, the waiter arrived with their dessert, a cupcake with heavy frosting.

"Let’s eat... haha," Lucia stated, eating hastily while Daniel looked at her.

"Lucia... my father died unjustly," Daniel whispered, gripping his fists together upon recalling the memory when he was still young.

Lucia’s eyes widened. "I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t know about it," she whispered softly.

"It’s alright. My father’s death remained hidden from the public, but that’s all I can say," Daniel smiled and ate his cake.

"I see. I feel honored for you to share that with me. I will keep it to myself," Lucia replied, smiling.

"Thank you," Daniel said. His mood changed since their topic was quite depressing for him.

"If you need an emotional partner to help you get through the trauma. I’m here," Lucia offered herself. It was the best option with her, and she needed Daniel’s trust.

"Thank you," Daniel smiled slightly. He didn’t rely on someone that easily, but somehow, he felt easy and warm with Lucia by his side.

"Okay. After this, do you want to stroll around?" Lucia asked to divert the topic. She wanted to take it slow before striking again.

"Sure, haha. I should be the one asking you that," Daniel laughed, shaking his head in amusement.

"Don’t mind it. I can lead sometimes," Lucia winked at Daniel, showing a playful side.

"Cute, haha," Daniel chuckled, showing his chocolate-coated teeth, but Lucia didn’t mind at all. "But all you need to do is sit back and enjoy yourself. Let me handle the rest," he added and winked back.
