Chapter 473: The Warm-Up
Lucia settled on a fancy chair inside the restaurant. She was dead tired but tried her best to be excited at their dinner.
"What would you like to have?" Daniel asked with a grin. He browsed on the menu, but it wasn’t his liking.
"Hmm, I’ll just have something simple. Perhaps a Carbonara with a pair of breadsticks on the side and a glass of orange juice," Lucia replied and placed the menu on the table. She looked around and admired the chandeliers hanging on the ceiling.
"Alright, I’ll have some steak and wine," Daniel stated after picking.
The waiter came to them after a few minutes and Daniel repeated their orders without letting Lucia speak.
"So, how are you?" Daniel asked while waiting for their food.
"I’m good, how about you?" Lucia asked as a follow-up.
"I am good as well. A little bit busy, but I can manage," Daniel replied with a chuckle.
Lucia’s eyes widened and the memory of the chopped corpse replayed in her brain. She felt odd talking to someone who could kill a person without remorse.
"I see. Must be hard as the only heir to your father’s business," Lucia commented. She was trying to warm up the conversation about Nutri’s family business without sounding suspicious.
"Ah, yes. I wish I had siblings, but I’m the only one carrying the burden," Daniel sighed heavily and drank a glass of water.
Lucia’s eyes squinted at Daniel’s slight change of expression when he said the word ’burden’ but acted as if she saw nothing.
"Your parents must be proud of you, especially your father," Lucia smiled sweetly, but Daniel reacted negatively.
Daniel’s face was distorted into disgust. He covered it up with a forced smile, but Lucia had already seen it.
"Let’s not talk about them," Daniel stated and looked on the side uncomfortably.
Lucia felt she had hit a bullseye. "I’m sorry. I don’t know anything about your family, but I’ll be here if you need a shoulder to cry on," she stated softly. She now knew there was something more about his relationship with his parents.
Daniel flinched and glanced at Lucia. Everyone told him the same thing about him going to them if he needed help, but when he did, they vanished like bubbles.
That made Daniel oppose Lucia, but he shrugged it off and let the time become a teller if she would be there for him or not.
"Thank you," Daniel replied and drank more water.
By then, their food arrived and they ate in awkward silence.
’Did I just blow it up?’ Lucia thought and pinched herself since she became anxious thinking she might have done something that offended Daniel.
"Do you like your food?" Lucia asked to start a conversation and to break the ice between them.
"Yes, it’s great, but our steak is far more delicious than this," Daniel replied while slicing the meat.
Lucia opened her mouth to reply, but when her eyes glanced at the steak’s juices. She just wanted to vomit.
"You want to try some?" Daniel asked after seeing Lucia looking at his plate.
"Ah, no. I’m just curious about the difference in the steaks between here and your restaurant," Lucia stated while gulping the lump of vomit in her throat.
"Well, we could go there on Saturday," Daniel suggested since he also wanted Lucia to see one of their businesses.
Lucia forced a smile. She didn’t want to go after what she had seen in their house and was worried that human meat was served as one of their dishes.
"Thank you for the invitation, but maybe next time. If it’s alright, I prefer going to places outside the city. So we can have some peace over this chaos," Lucia stated, wanting Daniel to consider it.
"I will think about it," Daniel replied, and his body relaxed from the change of their conversation.
Lucia grinned and continued eating. They talked about random stuff for an hour until it was time for them to leave.
"It was nice having dinner with you," Lucia stated when they reached outside. It was cold and the weather wasn’t that nice.
"Thank you for accepting. I can take you home," Daniel stated since it was a courtesy as the one who invited a lady.
"It’s alright. I can go home myself," Lucia stated as she planned to investigate Daniel’s restaurant in the middle of the night.
"I insist," Daniel pushed further, but Lucia was shaking her head.
"You already paid for my dinner. I don’t want to bother you anymore," Lucia reasoned out, but Daniel wouldn’t bulge.
"Of course, because I invited you. I won’t be a gentleman if I let you pay when I insist on taking you out. So please, let me spoil you for tonight," Daniel stepped closer and gestured for them to go.
Their carriage was parked quite a distance since there was a line of carriages waiting for possible passengers from the restaurant.
Lucia raised an eyebrow since Daniel was being too nice to her. It made goosebumps appear on her skin thinking she would be the next victim if she wouldn’t be careful enough.
Daniel saw a hint of distrust on Lucia’s face even though she was smiling. He wasn’t surprised since he was still a stranger in her eyes.
"I won’t do anything. I promise, I just want you to get home... safety," Daniel explained to avoid any misunderstanding between them.
"Umm, okay," Lucia giggled nervously while agreeing to be with Daniel. They walked for a while before they reached his carriage.
The ride was smooth while they talked about irrelevant things in life.
Lucia wasn’t able to gather much information, but she was glad to create a slight connection with Daniel.
They arrived at the flower shop and Lucia walked out.
"I’ll see you soon," Lucia waved goodbye.
"I will pick you up here on Saturday," Daniel informed to make sure their plans aligned.
"Okay," Lucia grinned and watched Daniel’s carriage walk away. She signed and thought about continuing her plans to investigate his restaurant or take a rest.
"I’ll think about this after a short shower," Lucia muttered and went through her bag for her keys when she felt a presence standing in the darkness.
