Chapter 468: The Covers
Lucia blinked a couple of times before she sat up and looked at the window, where the moon hid behind the thick, grey clouds.
"It looks like it’s going to rain heavily," Lucia muttered. She left her bed and opened her window, which had a balcony.
"Ah, it’s cold!" Lucia shivered and grabbed a blanket, covering her body while enjoying the chill. She sat on the chair and watched the gloomy environment. Somehow, it gave her peace.
Lucia thought about Gastone and what he had been doing while she was gone.
"Did he already move on? Does he have a lover now?" Lucia muttered. She bit her lips and slapped both of her cheeks. "Ah! Don’t think about him!" she exclaimed.
Lucia pouted and leaned back while stretching her body. She looked afar and wondered where was Misis Belo’s house.
The mansion was already huge, and the empty areas were used as a garden full of flowers and statues. At the back were several buildings that were quite far but still part of the property.
Lucia shrugged it off and went back to sleep, but she couldn’t. She had an itch to go out and explore the mansion.
"Ugh!" Lucia wiggled her feet aggressively in annoyance. She went toward the door and slowly peeked outside.
Lucia observed for a few minutes, waiting to see if there were any servants around. When the place was clear, she went out and strolled in the hallway.
Lucia was on the second floor of the mansion, and it felt deserted.
Along the hallway, there were several more half-bodied statues placed on a stand. They had many expressions on their faces, but none of them looked happy or had a smile on their faces.
That made Lucia creep out, and decided to ignore them as much as possible.
"I should go to the kitchen and grab a glass of water," Lucia muttered after feeling the built-up thirst. She descended down the stairs and expected someone to be around, but the place was empty.
"Hello?" Lucia called out, but there was no response. Her voice echoed in an empty room.
Lucia frowned and shrugged it off. She planned to go there on her own since the servants might be resting since it was three in the morning.
As Lucia followed the path from the dining hall to the kitchen. She noticed there was no candle lighting the place, which made her adjust her vision and use the wall to guide her where to go.
When Lucia touched the knob connecting to the kitchen. She slowly twisted it open and was surprised to see it was fully lit inside.
Lucia entered the room, but no one was around.
"Seems like they are cooking this early," Lucia muttered and went straight to get some water. She noticed there weren’t any vegetables on the table but rather several bowls with a lid.
Lucia put her glass back while wiping her mouth. She got curious about what dishes they prepared, and that got ahead of her. She already smelled a stench of meat, but as she got closer, the smell was unbearable.
"It will be fine," Lucia whispered and slowly opened one of the covers, lifting it up, and she immediately saw a hand.
Lucia gasped in shock. She put the lid back and staggered backward as she couldn’t believe what she saw. Her heart was beating fast while glancing at the other containers.
"Oh, my!" Lucia’s breath hitched when she decided to open another one to see what it contained. She already prepared herself to see another body part, but what she had witnessed struck her hard.
It was a severed head of a young female, and her eyes were wide open, void of life.
"Why?" Lucia whispered as she couldn’t help but feel sad the girl’s life ended early. She bit her lips to prevent any sound from escaping as she wanted to cry out loud.
Lucia took a deep breath and composed herself. She slowly put the lid back and calmly left the kitchen without leaving a trace of her being there. Her body shivered in shock but kept her emotions steady.
A few minutes after Lucia left, the other room opened. The chef, butcher, and Daniel entered the room.
"Is this all the harvest?" Daniel asked with a raised brow.
"Yes, the other good quality products are left on the farm, ready to be distributed, Master," the butcher replied and opened the lids to show Daniel.
Daniel glanced briefly at the dead bodies and turned to the chef. "How’s the restaurant going?" he asked.
Daniel had a family restaurant located on the high-end street of the city, which was famous for its meat dishes.
"Going absolutely well, Master. They loved the new... ingredients," the chef stated, gesturing at the corpses.
"Good," Daniel nodded in understanding. He grabbed two bags full of cash and gave it to them. "It’s a bonus for doing a good job," he added.
"Thank you! Master!" they exclaimed in unison, with their greed evident on their faces.
Daniel grunted and left the room as he still didn’t like the stench. He went upstairs to where his room was located, a few doors next to Lucia’s.
As Daniel reached Lucia’s door, he stopped and noticed the glint of light coming from the inside.
"Hmm," Daniel hummed and went closer, noticing the door was slightly open. He pulled the knob and closed it himself without bothering Lucia, as he was tired and wanted to rest.
On the other side, Lucia was standing next to the door, holding a vase in case someone would come into her room and kill her. Her heart skipped a bit upon hearing the soft click of her door that she hadn’t closed properly.
’I need to get out of here,’ Lucia thought and went to bed with the vase in hand. Her mind was full of thoughts as to why they do that kind of inhuman thing.
"Daniel... are you... the one I’m searching for?" Lucia asked herself. She had been searching for farms that housed the children and young adults that were sold to the black market from the Orphanage but that didn’t involve killings.
The thought it might be connected brought fear inside Lucia’s heart, but at the same time, she wished it was a different case.
