Chapter 467: The Son
Lucia was confused but cooperated. She took a spoonful and chewed the meat. It was softer and flavorful than any meat she had tasted before. Although, she was not fond of it and preferred to eat more vegetables.
"It’s delicious," Lucia complimented, thinking Misis Belo cooked and wanted to know her opinion.
"Good, good," Misis Belo was pleased and ate her portion as well.
"I just want to ask if we have another company?" Lucia asked and looked at the empty chair.
"Ah, it’s for my son. We always put a plate in case he goes home, but most of the time, he’s not here. He’s so focused on the business and making it big," Misis Belo explained with a wide smile.
"I see. You have a hardworking son," Lucia stated to pleased Misis Belo, who chuckled proudly.
"I know," Misis Belo replied. She gestured toward the other plates full of food. "Have your fill. Don’t be shy," she added.
"Thank you, I will," Lucia replied and scooped a portion to not offend Misis Belo even though she disliked some dishes.
Silence took over the room as they focused on eating. The female servants would serve them drinks from time to time and clean out plates after they were done.
Lucia was a bit awkward since several eyes were on her, watching her movement, and she despised it, especially the servants waiting for her to finish.
That made Lucia want to eat as fast as possible to make their job easier than waiting for her.
"Oh, don’t mind them. You don’t need to rush," Misis Belo chuckled, noticing Lucia kept glancing at her side and back.
"Haha, I’m not used to this," Lucia explained while wiping her mouth.
"They are just doing the job I paid them to do. You just have to relax," Misis Belo giggled while shaking her head in amusement.
"Oh, okay," Lucia replied awkwardly. She sensed the difference in status in that room, which made her think about herself. "Misis Belo, if you don’t mind. I want to ask if there’s another reason for inviting me here?" she asked.
Misis Belo stopped slicing her steak and laughed. "Ah, you always amuse me, dear Lucia," she replied.
At the same time, the door opened, and a man appeared with a stern expression on his face.
"Mother," the man stated and glanced at Lucia in confusion. "I didn’t know you have a guest," he added.
"Ah, Daniel. I’m glad you came back in the house," Misis Belo delightedly stated.
Daniel kissed his mother’s cheeks and proceeded toward Lucia.
"I’m Lucia, Sir," Lucia introduced herself with a slight bow.
"Hmm," Daniel hummed and grabbed Lucia’s hand, kissing her knuckle while looking straight into her eyes.
Lucia was taken aback but smiled forcefully, not to make things awkward if she reacted negatively.
Daniel sat in the center, and the servants immediately served him food without lifting a finger. He only moved when there was food on his plate.
Lucia couldn’t help but stare. She was always flabbergasted about how rich people acted like they didn’t have hands to grab their food.
"Do you want to eat more?" Daniel asked after noticing Lucia’s stare.
"Ah, I’m full," Lucia replied and drank water to avoid speaking.
"Miss Lucia owns a flower shop and sells great flowers that your father always liked when he was still alive," Misis Belo exclaimed gleefully.
"That’s great," Daniel replied while nodding his head, but his attention was focused on eating.
Lucia only smiled and didn’t say a word. She felt like she was invading a family meal.
"How’s the business?" Misis Belo asked since she had no news about what was happening except its outcome.
"Business is striving. There’s many pleasant...." Daniel paused and glanced at Lucia. "... goods," he added.
"Great! I’m planning to extend the mansion in honor of your father," Misis Belo stated with sparkling eyes.
"Yes, it might happen sooner. Please wait patiently, Mother," Daniel stated with a small smile.
"My son is very hardworking, Miss Lucia. He’s a good role for a man in the house," Misis Belo complimented his son.
"Yes, I noticed, Misis Belo," Lucia replied flatly with a smile. She now realized what Misis Belo had been doing all along, and she didn’t want to take part in it.
Misis Belo wanted to set Lucia for her son, Daniel, to be together since she wanted grandchildren as soon as possible.
"Mother, we talked about this," Daniel sighed in defeat. It wasn’t the first time his mother tried to set him up with a few ladies.
"My gosh, Daniel. I can’t wait that long!" Misis Belo exclaimed and gasped at being offended.
Daniel shook his head and faced Lucia, who remained still. "I’m sorry you got dragged into this. I’m sure you realized what’s going on," he whispered, which added to Misis Belo’s rage.
"Daniel! This is nonsense. You’re already old enough to have your own family. The business is already striving, and I’m not getting any younger!" Misis Belo shouted and threw her handkerchief toward Daniel before storming off, leaving Lucia alone.
"Misis Belo..." Lucia called out, but Daniel stopped her.
"You don’t have to. It’s not the first time this happened," Daniel explained before chugging a glass of red wine.
"I’m sorry. I may have caused—" Lucia bowed to apologize, but Daniel cut her off.
"As I’ve said, you don’t have to. I believe my mother told you she’s lonely and wants you to dine with her, hmm?" Daniel asked with a raised brow.
"Umm, yes," Lucia replied. She felt terrible about their family situation but was more irritated about being involved in their family drama.
"Ugh, the usual reason," Daniel rolled his eyes.
"I can leave, Sir," Lucia stood up, but Daniel held her arm for her to stay.
"You must have come a long way. Stay for the night, and you can leave in the morning. After all, my mother won’t be sleeping in this mansion," Daniel sighed, shaking his head.
At the same time, they heard a carriage rattling outside.
"That’s my mother moving to her own house. She’s always doing that if she’s upset. So you can be comfortable here now," Daniel added before gesturing for the servants to leave the room, as he also hated their prying eyes.
