Chapter 455: The Golden Coin
Chapter 455: The Golden Coin
"You’re going to be our golden cow. Bring us a lot of money, dear little Lucia," a menacing voice whispered to a young girl holding a doll.
"Y-yes... Mother," the girl replied and swallowed an orb bigger than her throat.
"Ah!!!" Lucia screamed and grasped her neck. She had a hard time breathing as cold sweat formed on her forehead.
"What the hell!?" Lucia exclaimed before grasping her head. She had a terrible headache that she had forgotten what she dreamed about.
Lucia stood up and went to the kitchen for a glass of water. She only had a single candle in hand to give light on her way. It didn’t take her long before she arrived at the kitchen, which was on the lower floor.
"Ugh, what did I even dream about?" Lucia muttered to herself after drinking a glass of water. She calmed down a bit, especially with the cool breeze entering the room.
Lucia remembered the same feeling she had experienced while looking outside the window of her room back with Gastone’s. She suddenly missed him but shook her head immediately.
"Ah!" Lucia slapped her cheeks. She couldn’t believe herself, and it had only been a day after they separated.
"What are you doing?" a male voice spoke against the darkness.
Lucia turned around and used her candle to see who it was.
"Joseph, hi," Lucia whispered in relief. She got anxious a little bit.
"It’s three in the morning," Joseph replied and walked closer to Lucia. He quenched his thirst with the same cup Lucia used.
Lucia was taken aback but didn’t make any big deal of it.
"You should sleep. It’s too early to wake up," Joseph stated and gestured for Lucia to go.
"Why are you awake then?" Lucia asked teasingly.
Joseph remained silent and avoided his gaze. "I heard your shouting. My room is next to you," he informed.
Lucia’s eyes widened. She never expected she was clamouring in her sleep, and that made her embarrassed.
"I’m sorry. I don’t know about it," Lucia replied and bowed slightly. "I’m sorry if I disrupt your sleep," she added.
"No need," Joseph held his hand to stop Lucia from apologizing. He was worried at the reason for her shouting, but seeing she was fine relieved him.
"Thank you... I-I’ll go back to the room," Lucia said, waving goodbye to Joseph before dashing away. Due to her speed, the candle was unlit by the wind.
"Oh, sh^t!" Lucia cursed and stumbled on her own foot. She was about to face plant on the ground when Joseph held her waist and pulled her up.
Lucia’s back hit Joseph’s chest, feeling his hardened muscles under the fabric, but most of all, she felt his d1ck.
"T-thank you," Lucia replied in hitched breath. She didn’t know why she had been falling twice that day, and Joseph had been there to save her.
"Watch your step," Joseph whispered lowly. His chest vibrated and made Lucia gasp. His hand stayed in her waist and slightly pressed her closer to him.
Lucia remained still and could hear her breathing. It was an intimate moment for them, especially in the darkness.
Joseph gulped and slowly removed his hand, stepping away. "Go ahead. I’ll watch you," he stated.
Lucia nodded and hurriedly opened the door. She glimpsed at Joseph one more time before entering.
"What the hell was that?" Lucia whispered. She leaned against the wall and slid down, sitting on the floor. She could feel her cheeks heat up from their interaction.
That night, Lucia and Joseph barely slept while thinking about what happened between them.
The following day, Lucia prepared early. She took a water bowl and scrubbed herself with a towel to clean herself. After she was done, she wore different but regular clothes than the last one.
Lucia wanted to blend in and draw less attention to herself when she entered the city again. She waited for a few hours until the sun rose up in the sky.
"It’s time," Lucia muttered before going out with her bag. She went down and was greeted by Frank, drinking his cup of hot coffee outside.
"You’re early," Frank whispered upon seeing Lucia. He gestured for her to come and sit beside her.
"I usually wake up around this time," Lucia lied. She smiled and sat beside Frank.
"I apologize for my wife’s behavior. I’m sure you get what she wanted, but don’t mind her that much. She only wants a grandchild early," Frank chuckled while shaking his head in amusement.
"Haha, I noticed," Lucia giggled. It was nice to have a calm conversation.
"Are you leaving now?" Frank asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, it’s better to be earlier," Lucia replied and beamed.
"Have a coffee before you go. To give you energy," Frank stated and prepared Lucia a cup. It took several minutes until it was ready.
"Thank you. I like coffee," Lucia grabbed the cup when Frank handed it to her. She took a sip and felt her body relaxed. "It tastes good," she added.
"That’s good. Be careful out there. It’s quite dangerous to travel alone nowadays," Frank muttered, frowning.
"Is there something going on?" Lucia asked innocently, but she knew way before about the happening surrounding the city. She needed more information since she had been gone for a while.
"Hmm, the news now surrounds the wolf attack and shadows the real issue. There have been multiple instances of young girls gone missing that haven’t been found. That’s why I want you to stay here yesterday," Frank grumbled while shaking his head disappointedly.
"Thank you for informing me," Lucia replied and took another sip.
"I’m a bit worried for Josette. She wants to travel sometimes, but I can’t risk it," Frank added and sighed deeply. He didn’t want to restrict his daughter, but he had no choice.
"I understand. You only want her to be safe. After all, she is a beautiful young girl," Lucia replied. In her perspective, Josette might become one of the victims since her background was not that great to be given extra attention by the authorities.
"Haha! Yes, she is beautiful. Just like her mother," Frank chuckled as his day started great.
The two remained silent while sipping their own coffee and enjoying the cool breeze of the morning sun.
After a couple minutes, Lucia put the cup on the table, finishing its content.
"Thank you for hosting me as your guest. I really appreciate it," Lucia replied genuinely. She valued those were good people since it was rare to find.
"And you’re welcome," Frank laughed, standing up to give Lucia a handshake.
Lucia accepted Frank’s hand with an item in her palm.
Frank paused and looked confused.
"This is my token of appreciation. I hope you accept this. Please open it when I’m gone," Lucia whispered before letting go.
Frank was baffled but followed Lucia’s instructions. "Well, thank you," he replied.
"Please tell Josette and Joseph I’m sorry. I can’t see them one last time and also your wife," Lucia added and curtsied.
"I will," Frank waved goodbye while Lucia walked away. He gripped the item tightly in his palm and felt it was a circular shape. That concluded that the thing was a mere coin.
When Lucia was out of Frank’s sight. He looked at his hand, and the item was wrapped in white cloth. He opened it while sitting on his chair and nearly fell back upon seeing it was a gold coin.
"Helen!" Frank screamed in panic. He bit the coin to know if it was real; it was. "Helen! Come here!" he called some more.
Helen woke up grumpily in her sleep. Frank’s screams not only awakened her but the entire family. They all ran outside, thinking their father was in some sort of trouble.
"My goodness! Frank! What it is again!?" Helen exclaimed in annoyance, but her attitude dropped after seeing the flashing coin in Frank’s hand. "What is that?" she asked abruptly.
"Miss Lucia left this as her sign of appreciation! Our debts are paid!" Frank exclaimed in tears. They had financial problems throughout the years, and Lucia’s single gold coin was an answer.
"Father, why did you accept it? She might need it," Joseph stood before them in disapproval.
"Miss Lucia wants me to take it. I don’t know it was made of gold in the first place!" Frank yelled and showed Joseph the coin.
Joseph took and examined. "This is a different kind of coin," he muttered.
"Maybe Miss Lucia is indeed not from her. I hope she’ll be fine out there alone," Josette whispered while sitting on the chair, not taking an interest in the coin. She was more worried that Lucia might get kidnapped.
The whole family became silent as their excitement was replaced by worry.
"I should find her," Joseph replied and was about to leave, but Frank held him back.
"Miss Lucia woke earlier to leave. She may have a reason to be here, and we don’t want to become a burden for her," Frank clarified while shaking his head.
Even though they cared for Lucia. They were conflicted about what to do.
