Chapter 454: The Nice Family

Lucia dragged Josette to their backyard. She stopped and stared at her in disbelief.

"Don’t worry. My brother knows I’m into that kind of novel," Josette shrugged as if it was nothing. She has many similar novels, and they didn’t care about her collection.

"But do they know its content?" Lucia asked with a raised eyebrow, making Josette pursed her lips.

"N-no...." Josette looked down in shame.

"Hmm," Lucia hummed. She wasn’t even surprised that Josette kept it hidden or else her books would be confiscated. "Well, your secret is safe with me, but this one needs to be locked up or at least cover the title," she added.

Lucia returned the book to Josette even though she wanted to read it.

"Okay!" Josette exclaimed and put it under her skirt.

Both ladies stared at one another, observing their features.

"You’re pretty. Are you my brother’s girlfriend?" Josette asked with a teasing look.

"Hah! No," Lucia was shocked, aggressively shocked her head at the misunderstanding. "I’m just a mere guest your father invited," she added.

"Hmm, okay!" Josette exclaimed and dragged Lucia back to the front house, where dinner would be served.

Joseph was seen dragging the dead deer to be washed and cut in the kitchen. At the same time, Frank and Helen came out of their house.

Helen had a bright smile on her face before approaching Lucia. She grabbed her hand and squeezed them softly.

"I’m sorry about our sudden disappearance, dear. I hope our house suits you well," Helen stated cheerfully. Her smile nearly reached her ears.

"Oh, your house looks so great! What a lovely home," Lucia complimented and showed her best attitude, which they liked.

"Well, take a sit. We will prepare dinner," Helen ushered Lucia to one of the wooden seats outside their home.

"I can help," Lucia replied. She felt ashamed that she would do nothing to help them even though she was staying for free.

"No need. Where are a bad host if we let you work," Helen stated and proceeded to her mini table to cut some vegetables.

"I insist," Lucia replied and removed her bag. She pulled her sleeves upward and went beside Helen.

"What a nice lady. I hope Josette will take lessons from you on how to be a proper one," Helen replied and side-eye her daughter, Josette, who continued to read her book silently.

"I’m sure she will be fine the more she grows," Lucia chuckled and peeled the carrots.

"I hope, hmm," Helen raised an eyebrow while Josette rolled her eyes.

As they continued preparing for dinner, Joseph returned with pieces of meat ready to be cooked.

Joseph placed them beside the table where Helen was preparing the ingredients.

Helen’s eyes squinted before glancing at Lucia.

"Our dear son, Joseph, is very hardworking. He would soon take over his father’s business," Helen stated with a smile.

"Oh, that’s good to hear," Lucia nodded but was confused as to why Helen would declare that to her.

"Mom," Joseph sighed and shook his head. He immediately left and went beside Frank, who was chopping several wood.

"What? You’re old enough, Joseph!" Helen shouted in annoyance. She dropped the knife she was using and faced her son with disapproval.

"Don’t make our guest uncomfortable, Helen," Frank stated nonchalantly while continuously working.

"Tsk," Helen rolled her eyes and faced Josette. "Bring Miss Lucia to her room, Josette," she added.

Lucia stopped what she was doing and glanced at Josette, who looked happy to leave them. Before she could reply, Josette pulled her in haste with her bag.

"Thank you!" Lucia shouted while being dragged.

While they were inside, Lucia could hear them arguing lowly. She was confused about what was going on but was more worried it would affect her well-being.

"Don’t take it at heart what my mother says. She wanted my brother to get married, but he refused. I’ve never seen him with a lover too! I suspect he’s gay," Josette whispered, sharing their family tea freely.

"Oh, maybe he hasn’t found someone he loves," Lucia replied, trying not to make things uncomfortable.

"Maybe, I don’t know, but Mom seems to like you for him," Josette faced Lucia and gestured to the door. "This is your room for tonight," she added and handed Lucia her bag.

"Thank you," Lucia replied, brushing off Josette’s first sentence.

Lucia entered the room, which looked completely normal. She settled her bag on the table and saw the surface was a little wet, showing it was recently wiped.

"I’ll be in my room," Josette replied before closing the door, leaving Lucia alone.

Lucia immediately opened her bag to check if something was missing. She sighed in relief when all her things were there.

"I should take a short nap," Lucia whispered and lay in the bed. She immediately smelled the blanket’s fragrance.

It didn’t take long before Lucia fell asleep in comfort.

An hour passed, and Lucia woke up with a knock on her door. She stretched her body before running toward the door. She yanked it open, and Joseph nearly punched her head when he was about to knock again.

"Ah!" Lucia was taken by surprise. She strode back in reflex to avoid the hit but stepped on her own clothes. She felt her body fall backwards, but before she slammed on the floor, Joseph held her waist tight.

"Lucia!" Joseph shouted in panic. His adrenaline rushed through his body, and he reflexively grabbed Lucia. He pulled her upward as she gripped his shoulders for support.

Both were shocked at the sudden accident.

Their eyes met briefly before Joseph pulled Lucia to her feet.

"Thank you," Lucia whispered and stepped back. Her heart was pounding like crazy from their interaction.

"I’m sorry about that again. I never intended to hurt you," Joseph stated sincerely and began checking Lucia’s head to see if he had hurt her.

"I’m alright, haha," Lucia replied awkwardly. She stared down and waited for Joseph’s words.

"Dinner is ready..." Joseph informed. He nodded before anxiously stepping away and exiting hastily, leaving Lucia alone.

Lucia secured her bag before following behind. When she went out, Josette was waving to sit beside her.

Helen changed her seat and nudged her daughter on the side. "Dear, sit here," she said and pointed at the chair beside Joseph.

Lucia smiled and sat down. She glanced at Joseph, who began talking to Frank, avoiding her.

"What a lovely meal," Lucia complimented upon seeing the large bowl of soup with deer meat.

"Thank you. I hope you like my cooking," Helen replied and ushered Lucia to take her portion.

"Mom! I want to sit beside Lucia!" Josette gritted her teeth in annoyance. She was fed up by her mother’s intention.

"Silence," Helen flicked her tongue and glared at her daughter before smiling at Lucia.

Lucia smiled back and scooped to fill her bowl. She was hungry from the travel as well.

"Joseph, serve our guest," Helen called and kicked her son’s foot to get his attention.

Joseph bit his lips in frustration but followed to avoid more arguments. He was sick of his mother’s marriage idea when he was still young and had dreams of his own before settling down.

"So, Lucia. Do you have a lover?" Helen went straight to the point.

"Ack! Uhh," Lucia nearly choked on her soup after hearing the question. Her thoughts immediately went to Gastone and what has he been doing when she was gone.

"Are you alright?" Frank asked in concern after seeing Lucia kept coughing. He glanced with a knowing look at Helen to stop pushing Lucia.

"Yes, I was just taken aback, but no, I don’t have a lover, but I have someone in mind," Lucia replied honestly. Even though she had announced how much she hated Gastone. She couldn’t ignore the feeling burning inside her chest.

"I see," Helen nodded. Her shoulder slumped in dismay.

"I believe he’s a great man to capture your attention," Frank chuckled.

Lucia beamed softly before taking a bite of the meat. "Hmm! This tastes so good!" she exclaimed while taking another one. She changed the subject since she wasn’t comfortable talking about Gastone to others.

"Because the meat is fresh," Joseph explained and put another meat on Lucia’s plate since she liked it.

That simple action sparked the fantasy Helen created in her mind. In her eyes, Lucia and Joseph would make a beautiful family and awesome babies.

"Eat a lot, my dear," Helen smiled widely, catering to Lucia while Josette looked at her as if she was crazy.

The dinner went well, surprisingly, as the topic went to a more uncontroversial side.

Lucia retreated back into her room. She sighed as fatigue engulfed her system, and all she wanted to do was rest. Her stomach bulged from her corset, and it took her several minutes to take it off.

"What a nice family..." Lucia whispered, but the sparkle in her eyes disappeared. It was replaced by dullness as she removed the rest of her clothing. "I’m jealous. I want to rip it apart, " she added.
