Chapter 453: The Book
Joseph blinked a couple of times while anticipating Lucia’s reply. He showed interest in her and was willing to listen to her story without thinking he might make her uncomfortable.
"Don’t be shy?" Joseph stated, chuckling after seeing Lucia’s troubled expression. "Are you perhaps looking for your lover that goes missing in the forest?" he asked additionally.
"N-No! Why do you think like that!?" Lucia exclaimed and stood up. She turned her back to avoid Joseph from seeing her reddened face.
"Haha! That’s good. I’m sorry! Did I tease you so much?" Joseph laughed delightfully, but his expression changed and became serious.
"Are you planning to... kill yourself?" Joseph added.
It was no surprise if the forest was used by people who wanted to commit su1cide as it was prevalent to happen. The bodies would either rot and become food for the plants or be eaten by wild animals.
"No, I will never do that. I have many things to achieve," Lucia replied. She sighed as she was back to her reality.
"That’s good to hear. That means you a hunter, too?" Joseph asked further.
"No, I’m not. Do I even look like one?" Lucia looked at him and pointed at herself.
"Haha! So you’re not a hunter, not finding a lover, and not killing yourself. So why are you here, alone?" Joseph asked nonchalantly. His eyes squinted, finding an answer.
"Hah! Why do you ask so much? Please, mind your own business," Lucia replied and rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"I’m just curious. That’s all," Joseph shrugged while shaking his head. "I’m only wondering why a lovely girl doing here and if there’s something I can help," he added with a smile.
Lucia’s eyes widened by Joseph’s suspicious compliment. She felt a boost of ego when she was called lovely, but she found it awkward.
"I have my own reasons," Lucia replied and sat back. Her voice was low but stern, wanting to drop the topic.
"I see," Joseph understood and nodded in understanding.
Both remained silent while waiting for the group to return. At that given time, Joseph and Lucia fell asleep under the shade and cool breeze.
It had been a few hours before the group returned with a deer in hand. As they went to the cart, they thought Lucia and Joseph went elsewhere, but then, they saw them on the floor, sleeping soundly together.
"Aren’t they cute, haha!" Frank chuckled before patting Joseph’s thigh to wake him up.
The other men laughed and stared teasingly at Joseph.
At the same time, Lucia woke up due to the sudden noise.
"Ah, you’re back!" Lucia stated while rubbing her eyes.
"Yes, we’ll be going to the city now," Frank replied before sitting in the front seat since he would control the horse.
"O-okay," Lucia whispered and sat as the other men went to the cart.
They talked a couple topics left and right. Although it focused more on Lucia’s love life, while Joseph remained silent and only listened to the conversation.
After an hour of travel, they arrived at the city’s entrance. It was a bit far from Lucia’s home, but it was fine by her.
Joseph offered his hand to help Lucia come down.
Lucia looked at Joseph’s hand and hesitatingly grabbed it. She felt disgusted by the idea, unlike the one she felt with Gastone, but she sucked it in.
Joseph put on a friendly expression and let go after Lucia was safely on the ground. He immediately went away and helped his father carry several loads.
Lucia was stunned by Joseph’s actions. She was about to thank him, but he went away so fast. Her eyes glanced down at his hand that touched her and saw him clenching.
"Is my hand wet?" Lucia thought and checked, but it was dry. She shrugged it off and followed them behind.
"Where will you be staying, Lucia?" Frank asked after they finished loading their resources, and several of their men went to nearby stores that bought their supplies.
"Ah... I plan to rent for tonight. Thank you for taking me here," Lucia replied, bowing slightly in respect for their excellent attitude toward her.
"Rent here is expensive. Even the cheapest one is complete trash!" Frank exclaimed in distaste while shaking his head in disapproval. He knew the city very well, and it was not favorable to a young woman like Lucia.
In their eyes, Lucia looked like a foreigner or a traveller based on what she wore. It looked expensive and different from what other commoners wear. That image would make her a target for scams and even kidnapping if she was that unlucky.
Lucia pursed her lips. She knew the rent issues since she had been doing that before, but she didn’t want to say that information, knowing Joseph couldn’t keep his mouth shut from asking questions.
"Maybe I can find a decent one," Lucia replied softly. She curtsied before turning her back to leave.
Frank was so concerned about Lucia’s well-being that he couldn’t help himself but called her back.
"Lucia, wait!" Frank shouted and waved at Lucia to return.
"Huh?" Lucia glanced and was confused. She thought she had left something.
"Come with us. Our home has a guest room for you to stay the night. It’s already late and unsafe for you to walk around alone," Frank stated and walked at Lucia.
"Umm," Lucia hummed in hesitation. She was worried Frank had other intentions why he wanted her to stay in their house, and her worries were visible on her face.
"Don’t worry. We won’t do anything to you. My wife will kill me, haha!" Frank laughed while shaking his head.
Frank’s words made Lucia sigh in relief, but Lucia’s guard was still high.
Lucia considered the pros and cons of renting or staying with a stranger. She gripped her bag tightly and glanced at the busy street.
"Okay, I’ll go with you," Lucia replied and smiled. She had been away from the city that she didn’t know what had been happening at the black market and was worried her appearance would draw attention to herself.
"That’s good to hear. You can leave by the morning, where it’s much safer to stroll around," Frank laughed and gestured for Lucia to return in the cart.
Joseph remained silent and kept himself busy poking the dead deer.
"Joseph, we’ll go back to our house now," Frank sneered at his son and ushered him to move faster.
It was another thirty-minute ride before they reached Frank’s home, outside the city but closer. It was surrounded by trees, which made it look peaceful without the busy streets and annoying rackets.
When they arrived, a beautiful old lady was waiting outside with a spatula in hand. A bonfire with a pot was already prepared.
"You are late, Frank," the woman complained. She hit Frank with a spatula on the shoulder.
"I’m sorry, my dear wife. We have a guest to stay overnight," Frank stated and gestured toward Lucia, who was coming down the cart with Joseph helping.
The woman’s eyes lit up, and glanced at Frank with a meaningful look.
"Hello, nice to meet you. I am Lucia," she introduced herself and curtsied. She wanted to make an ideal first impression to keep herself on their good side.
"Hello, I’m Helen, and this is my daughter, Josette. Please make yourself comfortable. I’ll make dinner in a few minutes," Helen stated before pushing Josette in front and dragging Frank inside their home.
Lucia giggled awkwardly and glanced at the little girl, who stared at her intently.
"Hello, Josette. How are you?" Lucia asked to create a conversation, but Josette ignored her and kept staring, which made it more uncomfortable.
"Stop being weird and go help, Mom," Joseph stated and ushered his sister to the side.
"It’s alright. Maybe she’s not used to sudden strangers," Lucia stated. She didn’t want Josette to be mistreated because she was there.
"It’s alright. She will only read her fantasy books anyway," Joseph replied and kept pushing Josette away.
"Is it about Werewolves?" Lucia giggled. She had remembered Joseph telling his sister that she liked fantasy books, especially about romance in Werewolves.
Josette’s eyes twinkled and pushed through Joseph. She ran toward Lucia and showed the book she was holding.
"Have you read this!?" Josette waited in anticipation while Lucia looked at the title of the book.
"Is that a new book? I haven’t seen that before," Lucia whispered in excitement. She didn’t expect being away for long would deprive her of a new release by authors.
"It’s a new one. The Author Milk released its Volume One!" Josette exclaimed while jumping in glee that Lucia shared her joy.
"Alpha’s Bite Between My Legs... That’s a bit bold title," Lucia thought it was too much for a young girl to read.
"Ha ha..." Josette laughed anxiously while glancing at Joseph, who didn’t know its content.
"What is it?" Joseph asked curiously and went beside Lucia to see what it was about.
Lucia immediately dodged him and pulled Josette with her. "We will have a girl talk. You can help your father with the deer!" she exclaimed and went away with Josette with her.
