Chapter 452: The Young Man
Lucia heard Gastone screamed her name. She looked back, but he was no longer there.
"Gastone?" Lucia called, but before her were just rows of trees. She looked around, but there was no trace of him.
Pain struck Lucia’s heart and her feet moved on their own, venturing deeper into the forest in hopes of seeing Gastone one more time.
"Miss! Are you lost?" a voice spoke from afar. It was a group of hunters preparing to dive deeper into the forest, but they saw Lucia.
"Huh? No... I just... I’m searching for someone," Lucia replied and stepped back. She lowered her head and a tear fell to his foot. That was when she realized she had been crying.
"You should report to the authorities, Miss. It’s dangerous to embark on this area alone," a man stated and gestured for his team to escort Lucia out of the woods.
Lucia obligated and it didn’t take long before they were out to the streets.
"Thank you," Lucia muttered while wiping her tears, which made the group believe she really had lost someone in the forest.
"We have a cart going to the city. You can go by with us if you can wait for a few hours," a young man stepped forward. He offered Lucia since no vehicles were going to that area and you needed to have your own or hire someone to go there.
Lucia pursed her lips in hesitation. She didn’t trust them to keep her safe since they might take advantage of her.
Little unknown to Lucia, her expression showed her distrust.
"Haha! We get it but don’t worry. My mother will punish us if we do something bad to a lady," the young man laughed before he got smacked by his father.
"Don’t mind him," the man replied while shaking his head. "I am Frank and this is my son, Joseph," he added.
"I am Lucia. Nice to meet you all," Lucia introduced herself followed by a slight curtsy.
The group started greeting Lucia and introduced themselves. After 15 minutes of talking, Lucia was convinced to stay and wait for them for a few hours.
"Hey, I’ll be accompanying you," Joseph smiled and stood beside Lucia.
"O-okay, thank you," Lucia replied with a smile. She waved goodbye to the departing group as she was left with Joseph.
Lucia was thankful she had met with good people, but she kept his guard high. She patted her thigh, which carried a small knife in case Joseph would try something sexual to her.
"Let’s go, Lucia. Also, I should be the one thanking you since you kept me away from my father’s job, haha!" Joseph laughed while gesturing for Lucia to follow him.
"It must be exhausting," Lucia replied and followed behind.
"Ah, yes, but it’s a business that keeps us alive," Joseph stated cheerfully. His radiated a carefree aura that made Lucia smile.
"What do you hunt in the forest?" Lucia asked curiosity.
"Hmm, anything that can be sold. Meat is meat, but recently, one of our hunters spotted a wolf in the middle of the night. So it became one of my father’s goals to see one since they are rare to come in these areas," Joseph explained. They walked a couple meters to where their cart was located. It wasn’t that far.
"A wolf!?" Lucia exclaimed in shock. She remembered seeing the beige wolf and she certainly didn’t want it to be hunted.
"Ah, yes, but don’t worry. We won’t kill it... yet, haha," Joseph laughed as if Lucia’s worry was funny.
"It will be better if you let the wolf stay in its natural habitat," Lucia explained, indirectly telling Joseph not to hunt it.
"Of course! But we are not the only ones hunting for it," Joseph stated and faced Lucia.
"Our hunter that saw the wolf spread the words around town, but the next day, we found him dead in his own house with multiple bites around his body. After that terrible incident. It’s declared to search for the wolf and kill it. However bringing the wolf’s head will be rewarded with money," Joseph explained further for Lucia to understand.
Lucia gasped and didn’t know what to say. It was terrible news to hear, but she couldn’t believe a wolf would do that.
"Don’t worry, I’m here to protect you if that beast comes around, haha!" Joseph laughed and showed his old gun.
"Can you describe the wolf your hunter saw?" Lucia asked. Her heart was racing furiously.
"He said it was a black wolf with white ears," Joseph replied while remembering since it had been a while.
Lucia sighed in relief that it wasn’t a beige wolf, but she was still concerned. After all, she liked them.
"Have you seen a wolf?" Joseph asked curiously. He noticed Lucia relaxed after describing the wolf, which made him think she knew something.
"Ah... No, but I like them since I read a lot of novels about them," Lucia replied and giggled awkwardly. She looked to the side and went to the cart to avoid further discussion about wolves.
"I see. Many women like that stuff and I don’t know why. Even my sister read similar books about that," Joseph chuckled while recalling his sister begging him to buy another book.
"It has a great storyline. Also, can I climb on the cart? My feet hurt," Lucia asked for permission.
"Sure," Joseph replied and offered Lucia a hand to help her go up, but he was ignored.
Lucia grabbed on the edge and pulled herself. She didn’t see Joseph’s offer. She settled on the floor and stretched her legs.
Joseph retracted his hand and awkwardly stretched his arms to avoid embarrassment. He hopped on the cart and sat opposite from Lucia.
"So, do you want to tell me why you’re here alone in the forest? I believe you have heard about the Mayor announcing that these areas are prohibited for the meantime," Joseph crossed his arms, showing his buffed muscles.
"Ah..." Lucia paused. She didn’t want to tell Joseph she was there because she had lived with a man on the other side of the forest.
