Chapter 443: The Rotten Apple
Chapter 443: The Rotten Apple
Navin pursed his lips after hearing Lucia’s story about the old lady she met back in the forest. That answered his questions about Lucia’s disappearance for hours, but she was only at the same spot.
"I see. Well, perhaps she’s one of our neighbors," Navin replied to assure Lucia that nothing suspicious was happening. He didn’t want her to panic and ruined Gastone’s chance even more.
"Yeah... I guess," Lucia scratched her head and laughed timidly. "I-I should go back inside. I need to pack my things..." she added and stood up from the seat.
"Are you really going?" Navin asked curiously, indicating about her leaving.
Lucia stopped and thought about it for a few seconds. She turned around and offered a tight smile to Navin.
"Yes, it’s for the best," Lucia replied before exiting.
Navin sighed and watched Lucia went away. His eyes glanced toward the window overlooking their spot.
Gastone was there, staring at them with a sad, yet pissed expression. He left when Lucia was gone.
"Hah... These two! Ugh! My job is supposed to guard them, but why am I getting involved in their love interest?" Navin asked himself while shaking his head in amusement.
"Navin!" Jorge arrived with a stern expression.
"Did you find something?" Navin asked. His attitude changed into seriousness.
"There’s no scent of strangers trespassing, but I found something unusual," Jorge stated before showing Navin a rotten apple, which was black in color, wrapped in a piece of cloth.
"A black apple?" Navin asked and was about to touch it, but Jorge pulled the apple away.
"We don’t know what this is. It might be poisonous," Navin replied and wrapped the apple tightly.
"We should report this to Lord Gastone," Jorge muttered, but Navin shook his head.
"I don’t think that’s a good idea," Navin replied and pulled Jorge into their house. It was a small one beside Gastone’s house and only had two rooms and a small kitchen.
"What’s the matter?" Jorge frowned. He found Navin’s actions suspicious as he didn’t sense anything wrong with Gastone and Lucia’s relationship.
"Well, those two need time alone and fix their connection rather than thinking about this problem. We should report this to the Palace instead," Navin replied sternly, urging Jorge to follow his plan.
"Hmm, I don’t really care about them and want to do my job without failure," Jorge explained his side. He wanted to get a bonus if nothing went wrong from guarding Gastone.
"Don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of the rest. As for you, I need you to deliver my letter to His Majesty," Navin stated before grabbing a piece of paper and started writing.
Jorge sighed and sat on the opposite end, waiting for Navin to finish.
On the other side, Gastone gritted his teeth after seeing Lucia being so friendly to Navin. His emotions were still in wrecked and that only added to his stress. He went down and met Lucia by the stairs.
Both looked at one another for a few seconds before they snapped their heads in the opposite direction to avoid contact.
Lucia stuck next to the wall to create enough space for Gastone to walk by. She shivered when their shoulders nearly touched one another. She ran straight toward her room, pulled the already packed things she had done before and fixed the other clothes she had used.
"I’m happy. I’m finally free from here!" Lucia whispered while packing, but then she saw a teardrop on her hand.
"Huh?" Lucia touched her face and noticed the wetness on her cheeks. "Why am I crying?" she whispered in shock.
Lucia kept wiping her tears away, but they kept coming like a fountain. Her heart remained still and felt no emotions.
Gastone, who stayed below the stairs heard Lucia’s words and cries. He pursed his lips and fisted his hand tightly.
"I never expect her to be so happy to leave here," Gastone muttered in disbelief. He turned around and went to the kitchen. He felt his chest constricted, which made it hard for him to breathe.
"What did I do wrong? Is my effort not enough? Am I not enough?" Gastone whispered before covering his eyes with his arms. Somehow, deep inside, he wished Lucia would come to him and say that she take her words back and stay by his side.
Gastone wanted to work to get Lucia’s attention again, but it seemed like fate didn’t want it to happen.
"I should let her go... Maybe, this mate thing isn’t for me," Gastone muttered and looked outside the window. He gripped the rose pendant in hand.
"But Draco really want to punish me this way! That man!" Gastone gritted his teeth and stared at the pendant. After he licked the rose print, it took fifteen minutes before he felt something forming in his mouth.
That was when the pendant formed through Gastone’s saliva. It flabbergasted him at how they did it, but remembering the day of their invasion made him understand that Draco and Rosina were weird wolves.
"Now, how should I use this? There’s no instruction," Gastone sighed while massaging his temples. He had told Lucia that she could leave, but he didn’t know how to activate the portal to the human world.
Aside from that, Gastone didn’t know where the portal was located. That created a set of problems and made him stressed even more.
For the rest of the day, Lucia and Gastone kept themselves away from each other. They even separated when mealtime came.
Lucia’s idea of making the best after she was gone got thrown in the trash. She couldn’t approach Gastone and talk normally. However, she didn’t know why she was acting like that.
"I still want to take a bottle of his milk as a souvenir," Lucia whispered while peaking at Gastone, who was now washing the plates. She planned to converse with him and set the mood, but she couldn’t due to how nervous she became every time she thought about doing it.
"Do you want to go now?" Gastone asked sternly before putting the last plate on the rack. He had known Lucia was gazing at him for fifteen minutes already and was waiting for her to speak first, but he got tired of waiting.
