Chapter 409: The Pancake

Chapter 409: The Pancake

The night came, and Gastone was resting in his chamber. He stared at the door connecting to Lucia’s room. Somehow, he felt uncomfortable knowing he could go to her anytime.

Gastone stood up and carefully put a chair on the door since he gave the key to Lucia. He wanted her to choose if she desired to lock the door or not. That action took Gastone 30 minutes since he was weighing if it was the best thing he could do to his mate.

The full moon shone brightly in the clear sky and looked peaceful to look at.

After a while, Gastone could sleep through the night. Lucia, on the other hand, remained awake.

"Ugh," Lucia groaned while tossing around to be comfortable, but the new place made her uneasy. She sat up and went to the window, opening it to let the fresh air in.

The heavy pressure bubbled inside Lucia’s stomach, making her feel sick.

"Ack! Not right now!" Lucia whispered and fell to the floor. She clutched her pained stomach and covered her mouth to stop herself from puking. She gagged several times but swallowed them back since she didn’t want Gastone to know her condition.

"I-I must... remain strong," Lucia muttered, forcing her wobbly legs to stand up. She didn’t know where she was, but somehow, she had trusted Gastone not to harm her, but her experience with men had traumatized her mind.

Sneakily, Lucia grabbed her small bag and dug out her hidden knife disguised as her comb. She tiptoed toward the wall and put her ears to listen if Gastone was asleep.

’I must kill him to secure my freedom. He might be one of the nice guys that will attempt to r@pe me,’ Lucia thought and slowly turned the knob and pushed the door open.

The door softly creaked, but it didn’t wake Gastone.

Lucia walked silently and gazed at the man before her. She was thankful that Gastone saved her but saw him as a hindrance. Her hands shook as she extended her arms to pierce Gastone through his heart.

"I-I’m sorry," Lucia whispered and was about to lunge an attack when Gastone moaned in his sleep.

"Hmm," Gastone was waking up when his wolf kept yapping inside him. He fluttered his eyes open and saw a blurry vision of Lucia towering over him with a knife, but before he could process what was happening, Lucia made a move.

Lucia swiftly put the handkerchief that contained several chemicals that could put someone to sleep into Gastone’s nose.

"Please work," Lucia whispered, waiting until Gastone closed his eyes. She waited for 10 minutes to make sure he was fully asleep. Her hands trembled due to the adrenaline, and she wanted to continue her goal but couldn’t.

Lucia stepped back and ran toward her room. She locked the door and covered herself with a blanket. Tears streamed down her face as memories of her past haunted her.

On the other hand, Gastone went back to sleep. The medicine wasn’t lethal to him, but he thought that image was part of his dream. He slept soundly throughout the night while Lucia was awake.

The next day, Lucia woke up early in the morning to start her job as Gastone’s cook. She had done cooking before and fed it to her sisters in the orphanage.

"I’ll act as if nothing happened last night," Lucia whispered nervously. She rummaged in the storage area and cabinets for ingredients.

"What should I make? Perhaps a simple one for breakfast!" Lucia chirped at her idea. She began taking the ingredients and put them on the table. She was confident of her skills and wanted to use them to direct Gastone’s attention away if he remembered a piece of what had happened last night.

"Pancake is so easy. I should make many batches to fill his stomach. I know men tend to eat a lot!" Lucia exclaimed while pouring all the ingredients into the bowl and mixing them. It took her a while to create a good texture and taste.

Lucia heated the pan and started to make her first pancake. She was nervous Gastone might fire her if she didn’t make delicious food. That caused her to tremble and splatter the batter around.

"Kyah! Oh no!" Lucia exclaimed and tried to save it, but she nearly knocked the bowl over with her elbow. She threw her spatula and saved the bowl before the batter spilt out. That move made her head hit the table’s leg.

"Ugh," Lucia groaned in pain and almost cried, but she sucked it in. She stood up and wiped the dirt from her body. She looked at the burnt pancake and put it on the plate.

"I’ll make sure to be careful!" Lucia stated to encourage herself. She put the bowl in a safe place and carefully poured another batch.

Due to Lucia’s fear of getting the pancake burnt, she flipped the batter even though it wasn’t cooked yet. Some parts were still in liquid form, but she didn’t care.

Lucia put it on the plate above the burnt one to hide it and proceeded to cook more.

"I think I’m doing great! Haha! I’m such a great cook!" Lucia laughed confidently. She poured a lot of batter and watched it bubble from the heat.

Lucia focused her attention on the pancake to avoid becoming a failure when the kitchen door opened, and two men entered. Their eyes met, and they silently stared at one another.

"Ah!.... AHHHH!!!!" Lucia screamed when she thought those men were thieves.

"Miss, we’re kni— workers!" one of them stepped forward and hushed Lucia to not wake Gastone.

"Wor-kers?" Lucia asked and stared at the two men’s faces. She remembered their appearance briefly and sighed in relief.

"I’m sorry about that. I am Lucia, Mister Gastone’s cook," Lucia introduced herself and smiled widely.

The two men were hesitant and looked at one another before introducing themselves.

"I am Navin, and this is Jorge," Navin stated and stepped back. "We’re here to get some supplies. I hope we’re not disturbing anything," he added.

"Oh, no. I’m making breakfast. Do you want some?" Lucia asked and showed the plate.

The two men were confused at what Lucia made, but before they could reply. The door burst open, with Gastone looking frantically around.

"I heard a scream," Gastone stated and went straight to Lucia, gazing at her to see if she was harmed.

"Ah, I was just surprised when your workers entered," Lucia replied, stepping aside since she got uncomfortable at Gastone’s closeness.

"Oh, I see," Gastone didn’t notice the small action. He remained still and looked at the disguised Knights.

The three men looked at one another without words before the two knights bowed and left the kitchen.

Those Knights were tasked to keep an eye on Gastone; it was part of their job to see if he was still there.

Gastone sighed and brought his attention back to Lucia. "Well, I hope you’re not harmed," he stated with a smile.

Gastone recalled the images of Lucia standing over him with a knife, but the more he stared at his mate. He believed she didn’t do that due to her innocent face.

"I am... fine," Lucia nervously replied and couldn’t look straight into Gastone’s eyes. She handed him the plate that contained pancakes before getting back on the pan. "I’m making breakfast!" she added.

Gastone’s eyes furrowed in confusion at what kind of dish he was looking at. Then Lucia put the newly cooked pancake on the plate with a big smile on her face.

"I made you some pancake!" Lucia exclaimed excitedly. She rubbed her nose and was proud of her work, but Gastone was dumbfounded.

"You uh..." Gastone didn’t know what to say. After all, the last pancake had burnt and cooked side. He didn’t want to be rude since it was his mate. "It’s good that you know how to cook as a woman," he added.

"Huh?" Lucia blinked a couple times since she was confused by Gastone’s words.

"Is there something wrong?" Gastone asked in puzzlement. He believed it was the right word to say.

"Ah, no. Please enjoy your breakfast!" Lucia exclaimed and gave a bright smile, but deep inside, she didn’t like what Gastone said. Although, she brushed it off and thought it was part of her job.

"I will," Gastone smiled and sat on the table. He glanced at Lucia, who began making him a cup of coffee. He didn’t drink coffee but wanted to see how she made it.

In the meantime, Gastone focused on his pancake and flipped the first one, only to see the burnt side. He composed himself not to laugh and found it cute. He was somewhat concerned that he would get a stomach ache if he ate the pancakes.

Gastone gulped before picking up the cooked pancake with a fork and used the uncooked one in liquid form as the sauce since Lucia didn’t give him anything to partner with it.
