Chapter 386: The Screeching
Chapter 386: The Screeching
A woman dressed in a long-sleeved white gown with silky hair cascading down her waist. She was a beauty that men desired to marry.
"Welcome, Your Majesty, Luna Nucci," Pantee Altera, Luna and wife of Affonso, greeted them with a gentle, sweet smile. The baby in her arms yawned and scooted closer.
"What a cute pup you have," Felissa stated, walking closer. She glanced at the pup, and her eyes widened in delight. "So cute!" he added.
"Thank you, I am Pantee, by the way," Pantee introduced herself with a grin and started moving her arms for the pup to sleep. "And this little one is our second child. His name is Carlo," she stated sweetly.
"Little Carlo," Felissa whispered. She touched the pup’s hand softly and felt the softness of his skin.
Draco watched as he imagined the day Rosina would give birth to their child. He couldn’t wait for that moment to see them grow.
"Your Majesty, would you like to rest in one of our rooms in the Pack House?" Affonso offered, but Draco shook his head.
"We would like to settle near the Labyrinth’s area," Draco replied.
Affonso nodded and signalled his men to start building tents.
"While you wait, would you like to have some tea?" Pantee asked softly.
"That will be nice," Felissa replied, glancing at Draco, who glued his eyes toward the baby.
Felissa and Pantee couldn’t help but giggle.
"Then, I’ll prepare some," Pantee stated, and her servant came forward to handle the baby while she worked.
"Is it alright if I hold Carlo?" Felissa asked with twinkles in her eyes.
Pantee and her servant looked at one another before she agreed. Felissa held the pup close to her and imagined that it was hers.
"Hellooo, how are you?" Felissa asked softly and started humming. She leaned back on the sofa and kept her eyes on the baby most of the time.
"He’s wonderful," Dracp commented as he sat down in front of Felissa.
"Yes, he is, Your Majesty," Felissa replied, and it didn’t take long before Pantee arrived with a platter of tea and cookies for them to snack on.
Patee took her pup, gave it to the servant and put in his bed to sleep.
Felissa used her strength not to whine and kept the baby for long.
"I heard from your husband that you enjoy painting and art," Draco started the conversation.
"Ah, yes. My parents actually used fruits and other plants to make and sell paints. That’s when I tried to smear the plain walls of our home to give color," Pantee explained shyly. She was always ashamed of her background and saw herself as a burden to Affonso, but that changed when he fought for her.
"You must have had a hard time before," Felissa commented with pity in her voice. She referred to the Old Monarch’s rule, where everyone could marry who they wanted and dismissed the thought of a real mate.
"Yes, it was hard since I have nothing to offer to my mate but myself. My family was not rich, and my education was below the nobles’ knowledge. For Affonso to choose me over a noblewoman made me happy, but it brings heaviness to my heart," Pantee stated and touched her chest. Even though they had been married for years and had two beautiful children. The darkness that surrounded her soul still remains.
"I’m sure your husband is very delightful to marry you," Draco stated to assure the doubt Pantee had.
"Yes, he looks like it, but I haven’t contributed anything to the Pack—" Pantee was stopped with Felissa’s hand to hush her.
"I apologize for my gesture Luna, but I do believe you already contributed enough and performed your role to the Pack," Felissa stated with a smile.
Pantee stared at Felissa for a few seconds and sighed deeply. She giggled and composed herself.
"Also, marrying someone, not your mate, will only lead to an unhappy, miserable life. Who wants that?" Felissa added before drinking her tea. She noticed the cup was also painted with flowers.
"I agree to that," Draco commented while enjoying the cookies.
"Thank you," Pantee smiled at the warmth they gave to her.
After a while, Affonso arrived and informed them that the tents near the Labyrinth were ready.
Felissa and Draco bid goodbye to Pantee while Affonse decided to tag along. The Pack members who wanted to glimpse the King waited outside in hopes they would be noticed.
Draco remained his stone-cold face and ignored the eyes staring at him. He was used to it, but the reaction he got from them was different.
Before, Draco was used to wolves glaring at him and whispering gossip about his behavior or attitude negatively. Still, in Lightcrest Pack, the she-wolves looked at him with lust while the men were jealous.
"It seems like you’re popular here, Your Majesty," Felissa whispered in amusement. They rode the carriage to reach the area since it was a bit farther from the Pack House.
"Ah, I like to apologize about that," Affonso chuckled awkwardly and scratched his chin.
"What do you mean by that, Alpha?" Felissa asked in curiosity.
"Well, it’s a bit shameful to say, but when His Majesty was a Prince. I admire him too much that everyone in this Pack knew about it," Affonso explained and couldn’t help but become embarrassed.
"Your role model, Alpha?" Felissa raised an eyebrow since it was her first time hearing someone admire Draco in a good way.
"Yes, I always failed in getting noblewomen to like me. At that time, His Majesty was famous among unmated she-wolves. So I noted his ways of enticing the women when I visited the Palace. I used all the information I had to get a wife from a good family, but then, I found Pantee, my mate. So all my efforts are useless, haha!" Affonso laughed wholeheartedly as he remembered his past. He was always shy to talk to any female since he was an only child, and his life was focused on studying and becoming assertive in preparation for his Alpha title.
Felissa and Draco remained silent.
"That’s a unique past you have," Felissa commented awkwardly and glanced at Draco. She could see how his face hardened the more Affonso talked. Although, she wasn’t surprised since it was the truth.
"Please don’t talk about that in front of my mate if you two meet in the future," Draco stated sternly, followed by a low growl.
Affonso’s smile disappeared after he realized he had crossed the line and shared a secret he had kept for years from the nobility. "I apologize for my behavior, Your Majesty. I’ll make sure not to say a word to the Queen," he stated, trembling.
"Good," Draco cleared his throat and looked outside the window.
The silence was awkward and suffocating.
Felissa wanted to get out, but she couldn’t. She was thankful when the carriage stopped, and the coachman shouted that they had arrived. Her eyes widened at what she had seen.
Unlike the building of the Labyrinth in the Midnight Pack, the one in Lightcrest Pack was broken down and looked like it was about to collapse.
"This place..." Felissa muttered in shock.
"Well, I once again apologize. We used the location as a training ground, so it looks old and ripped," Affonso explained. It was a perfect place to train their knights and warriors due to the vast clearing, and before, the building was sturdy and was used to condition their men to climb.
"Aren’t you afraid that whatever is inside the Labyrinth can come out of these holes?" Felissa asked in concern. She stared at Affonso and saw his confused expression.
"What do you mean, Luna? I’m sure no other wolves live inside that abandoned Labyrinth," Affonso stated with a chuckle. "We never heard a single soul while we’re around this area," he added.
Felissa pursed her lips. She didn’t want to argue if she had no proof of life living inside the Labyrinth.
"When the participants entered. We heard a commotion inside..." Felissa muttered while trying to figure it out.
"Well, it’ll be expected since they need to fight one another for a spot. I won’t be surprised if there’s a casualty in the end," Affonso commented and gave a shrug.
"We heard a unique sound coming from the Labyrinth," Draco joined the conversation as he sat on the sofa.
"A sound, Your Majesty?" Affonso’s eyes widened as fear started to creep in.
"Yes, a sound’s very ancient. Something we haven’t heard for centuries," Draco stated thoughtfully. He paused for a few seconds as his senses got something. He stood up from his seat and stared at the door.
"Get out... GET OUT OF HERE!" Draco screamed. He hurriedly sprinted toward Felissa and yanked her back while using his body as a shield.
"Your Majesty—" Affonso couldn’t continue his words when a loud rumbling, followed by a screeching, was heard.
Then, the crumbling walls of the Labyrinth were smashed by a strong force, throwing everyone closer to the area.
