Chapter 381: The Labyrinth
Chapter 381: The Labyrinth
Vicenzo stared at Felissa’s back. It had been two days since, and everyone was preparing for the next Trial. She was busy working to ensure everyone would be much safer this time.
"Are you just going to watch her do all those things?" Vanda appeared and whispered into Vicenzo’s side.
Vicenzo flinched since he didn’t feel Lady Vanda’s presence at all. He glanced at her with a furrowed eyebrow.
"Lady Vanda, may I ask what you mean by that question?" Vicenzo said lowly.
Vanda crossed her hand and gestured for Vicenzo to go with her. She turned her back and left without waiting for Vicenzo’s reply.
Vicenzo’s eyes widened as he looked back and forth between Felissa and Vanda. Ultimately, he informed Vinicio about his absence and decided to follow Vanda.
They went deeper into the nearby garden where there were alone.
"Lady Vanda, do you need something from me?" Vicenzo asked as he didn’t want to leave Felissa for long.
"I’m asking you if you’re alright seeing your own mate working hard on her own?" Vanda asked sternly and snapped her head toward him.
"Mate..." Vicenzo muttered and realized that Vanda knew his real identity. His voice changed into his normal tone as he spoke. "How did you know?"
"Hmm, I mean. I’m not that naive," Vanda shrugged with a pout. She began to whistle, and it irritated Vicenzo’s ears.
"What do you want?" Vicenzo asked sternly. He fisted his hands to stop himself from worrying.
"You still haven’t answered my question," Vanda asked, tilting her head to the side.
"I... I don’t want to see my mate working hard all by herself, but I’m trying my best to support Felissa as her Knight," Vicenzo replied, hoping that satisfied Vanda.
"Eh, I believe you already learned she’s doing all of this to give you a head start if you take your position as the Midnight Pack’s Alpha," Vanda stated playfully and leaned closer. "Isn’t it a bit cruel? You knew but decided to do nothing about it," she added.
Vicenzo felt insulted by Vanda’s words.
"I already told you I help my mate with whatever I can as her Knight!" Vicenzo raised his voice to save his face against Vanda’s accusation.
"As her Knight, yes. Such as guarding her? Keeping her safe? If that’s all you do, then you’re selfish," Vanda stated without pause. She crossed her arms and watched Vicenzo’s blood boil with anger.
"Lady Vanda, please mind your own business," Vicenzo gritted his teeth to remain calm.
"I can’t stay in my own place knowing a friend of mine is getting used by her own mate," Vanda stated nonchalantly.
"I’m not using her!" Vicenzo shouted. He was breathing deeply to control himself from lashing his anger toward Vanda. For him, if Vanda was a man, she was already dead.
"Oh, really? Then do you think you’re doing enough? Is that it? That’s below the bare minimum," Vanda shrugged and grinned sweetly. "If you continue being an assh0le. I suggest you leave Felissa alone and let her have a second-chance mate that will treat her right," she added.
"NO!" Vicenzo screamed and reflexively put his hand on his sword, but he stopped before pulling it out.
"Then prove your worth and stop with your games, it doesn’t suit you," Vanda replied before leaving him alone.
Vicenzo’s body trembled as it sunk into his head. He rubbed his face roughly and looked at the sky. He didn’t know what to do, and his brain was in chaos.
"Felissa, will you hate me if you know the truth?" Vicenzo whispered. Different scenarios were created in his brain about the outcome if he disclosed Felissa the truth. In the end, he decided to keep it for now.
Felissa wiped the sweat from her forehead. She looked at the map and consulted the Knights if the area was ready.
The following Trial would be held between Midnight and Lightcrest Pack along its borders, where an abandoned labyrinth was located. Due to its old age, gigantic trees and roots surrounded the area, making it harder for wolves to pass by. Along with that, thick mist covered the area with several kinds of wild animals lurking around.
Vanda suggested using that place since only the strong wolves would dare go to that zone, and Rosina approved it. Although, it wasn’t announced to the public yet as it would cause a riot before the Trial started.
"Luna," Vicenzo whispered as he approached her.
"Ah! Knight Icen, you’re back. We need to travel in 15 minutes," Felissa explained, not looking at him. She gathered the files and was about to leave, but Vicenzo blocked her path.
"Luna, do you have time later? I need to tell you something," Vicenzo whispered, and it took all of his strength to say them.
Felissa blinked a couple of times before smiling. "I’m a bit busy," she stated before leaving.
Vicenzo frowned and followed behind her. He didn’t say a word, but he could feel the drift from their current relationship.
Felissa entered a carriage, and the knights were tasked to gather the participants to the cart before they left. There were no viewers this time since the area was dangerous, and if something terrible happened, the Knight couldn’t save them all.
Vicenzo clenched his fists together. He was about to build his courage to tell his mate the truth, but the timing was wrong.
’Lady Vanda, I will show you my value as Felissa’s mate," Vicenzo gritted his teeth. Vanda’s words crushed his pride as a man and a mate, but that was enough to make him change his mind.
"And Felissa, I won’t be a burden to you and prove that I can be the Alpha you deserve," Vicenzo muttered silently.
But before Vicenzo could do his personal work. He needed to finish his job as a Knight.
After the 20 participants settled in the cart. Their journey started toward the edge of the two borders.
Meanwhile, Vanda was left in the Midnight Pack. She temporarily led the Pack in case something happened while Felissa was gone. She was supposed to come with Felissa but didn’t want to due to personal reasons.
On the other side, Felissa and Draco rode the same carriage.
"I never expected you to use the old Labyrinth, Felissa," Draco stated nonchalantly. He crossed his arms while looking outside the window.
"Yes, I have read about them in books, and it fascinates me," Felissa smiled and fidgeted with her fingers.
"But have you also read the dangers lurking inside of it? I’m sure you understand that place is even older than your parents," Draco said, staring at Felissa.
"Yes, that makes it a perfect place for a Trial," Felissa replied. She took out a book and showed Draco a sketch. "A door is here in the Midnight Pack, while the other is in Lightcrest Pack," she explained.
"I see. Then, where shall I place myself?" Draco asked and leaned back comfortably.
"After we arrived at the starting point. Your Majesty will travel toward the Lightcrest Pack. The Alpha already prepared for your arrival," Felissa explained.
"I will stay until the Trial starts. The Labyrinth is already dangerous, but you should also be wary of the forest," Draco frowned and was worried Felissa disregarded her own safety.
"Don’t worry, Your Majesty. Everything will be fine," Felissa replied cheerfully. She stared at the sketch where the Labyrinth’s map was drawn. She had spent months trying to figure it out.
Draco sighed while shaking his head in disagreement. "I always wonder why my dear wife approves of this, but I’m not even surprised," he stated weakly.
Felissa giggled, and their conversation ended. She looked outside the window and watched the trees go by.
Aside from the Labyrinth being a perfect place for the Trial. Felissa wanted to see it herself. After all, she was always interested in the realm’s history since it was still unknown, and the books that held the ancient stories were nowhere to be found, as if they didn’t exist in the first place.
After a few hours, they arrived at the Labyrinth, where a few Knights settled first to ensure no wild animals would attack them.
"We’re here," Felissa muttered, and her heartbeat raised in excitement. She was about to open the door, but Draco went to it first.
Draco stepped down and extended his hand to her.
"You don’t have to, Your Majesty," Felissa waved her hand in front, but she couldn’t reject the King.
"This is all I can do for you... at least," Draco stated and gave her a small smile.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Felissa replied and curtsied. She glanced at the premises with amazement.
The Labyrinth’s walls were high and sturdy even after its abandonment. Although, some bricks were chipped due to the roots and vines growing in place.
Felissa was still in awe when a commotion broke out. The participants were arguing with one another, and the Knights tried to settle them down.
