Chapter 378: The Water Trial

The participants assembled at the site where the first challenge would hold. The gushes of the water were loud and harsh, and everyone was concerned about the rules.

"Our first challenge is the Water Trial. The rules are simple. Each participant will group themselves into five, and you will race toward the finish line. No one is allowed to step out of the river, and only the first to arrive in each group will proceed to the next Trial," Felissa explained with a smirk.

The viewers and participants frowned in confusion and started to talk among themselves.

A participant raised a hand.

Felissa smiled and gestured for him to speak up.

"Luna, is that all the rules?" Elio, a commoner, spoke in confusion. He wanted to know if Felissa had missed something to tell them.

"Yes, that is all. You figured out the rest," Felissa answered, bringing more chaos to the Pack. She looked at them excitedly and added, "Please group yourselves into five and one group in four. We will draw lots after 15 minutes, and we’ll start."

After Felissa announced, the participants started eyeing one another since only one could win in a group of five, which meant they wanted to group themselves to those weaker than them.

Draco, on the other hand, was at the finish line, waiting for the first one to arrive. He was supposed to announce the rules, but Felissa took the job instead.

"I’m amazed by the rules, Luna," Vicenzo whispered. He was one of the knights scheduled to guard Felissa, along with Vinicio.

"Hmm, I want someone with a brain, not just all strength. If I can, I want someone with both qualities," Felissa answered while eyeing those who looked like they had potential.

Vinicio nodded his head in agreement and watched as the group slowly formed.

After 15 minutes, Felissa held her whistle to her mouth and signalled that the 15 minutes were over. Vinicio stepped in front, holding a box full of sticks that contained numbers.

"Please line up," Vicenzo stated, ensuring no one would do funny business while taking numbers.

"The digits you are holding will be called randomly," Vicenzo announced and looked at Felissa, who was drinking her tea.

"You may," Felissa smiled and ushered Vicenzo/Icen to continue. It was sunny, and the water was calm.

The participants were chuckling since they thought it was easier than expected since it was just a race.

Vicenzo smirked since he liked how Felissa made the challenges that still held mysteries to be solved by the participants.

"The first one is number... 99," Vicenzo announced, and the last group flinched in surprise.

"Hah!" the group whined but positioned themselves at the river’s edge.

Five gigantic rocks’ upper parts were above water and could be used as stepping stones at the starting line.

But a fight broke out among the first participants before they could stand on those stones.

"No! This one is mine!" a man yelled, pushing the other one, who was thrown into the river.

The others took the opportunity to take a good spot to start. The atmosphere became intense and pressured after seeing what was happening. They looked at Felissa and expected she would interfere, but she didn’t.

Felissa’s grin grew wider. She raised her hand and ignored the commotion in front of her. "START!" she screamed.

Among the five participants, the other two jumped and swam through the waves; the other used stones as his passage. Meanwhile, the two that were fighting had a delayed start.

"Isn’t that unfair?" Vinicio commented that since all the participants didn’t have an equal start, it would be unfair to the last one.

"I don’t need idi0ts," Felissa replied, smiling sweetly toward Vinicio.

"I do believe it’s for the best. After all, it’s already unfair from the start," Vicenzo stated nonchalantly, which confused Vinicio. He looked at the couple, and they had the same expression of amusement and evilness mixed together.

"You both are scary," Vinicio accidentally spoke his thoughts loudly.

Vicenzo and Felissa looked at him simultaneously with raised eyebrows, questioning what he meant by his words. He didn’t know if he would be scared or amused by their similarity in that aspect.

"Nothing, don’t mind me. Also, I haven’t seen Lady Vanda since this morning," Vinicio commented and looked around. He always witnessed Vanda helping prepare the event, but when it started, she went missing.

"Hmm, she’s busy," Felicia replied, turning toward Vicenzo. "I think it’s time," she stated.

Vicenzo nodded his head and inhaled deeply to gather strength. "Number 1, please proceed to the edge," he announced.

The participants looked at him in shock. It wasn’t a while since the first group went, and yet another batch was up.

"Luna, have the first group reached the finish line?" a man stepped forward and asked. He was wearing simple attire, which showed his status.

"They haven’t... yet," Felissa smiled and shrugged. Their actions made the participants suspicious that the Trials were abnormal and that they should do something in line with the rules.

"Don’t waste your efforts trying to think this Trial makes sense," Luca, Felissa’s cousin, spoke and glanced toward her. He sighed and shook his head. He was in the next group but didn’t go to the ’starting line.’ He went behind the tree and pulled a rope.

The viewers and other participants watched Luca and saw him dragging a small boat toward the river.

"Hey! That’s cheating!" the participants shouted in unison and tried to argue with Luca, but he didn’t care.

"This is why you commoners are lower than us nobles! The rules only state that no one is allowed to step out of the river, and only the first to arrive in each group will proceed to the next Trial. The Luna didn’t mention that we cannot use other materials to help us!" Luca shouted and growled as he placed his boat at the starting point.

"Luna, is this true?" another man asked to validate the question.

Felissa didn’t reply and smiled. She raised her hand and whistled. "START!" she shouted.

Luca immediately rode his boat and paddled against the rocks and waves as fast as possible. He dreamed of becoming Beta, which was impossible since he wasn’t born and raised in Midnight Pack.

It was a huge opportunity for Luca to join the Trials, and he would do everything he could to get the spot no matter how much it took.

Currently, Luca was paddling smoothly without commotion since his other group was left behind. He thought it was easy for him to win, but then a huge wave splashed over him out of nowhere. It almost tilted his boat, but he managed to stay still.

Then screams echoed from a distance, and when Luca got closer. He saw the participants fighting against Kraken’s tentacles that merged from the river.

"What the heck! There’s no monster in this river!" Luca exclaimed in surprise and began to panic. He hadn’t encountered one before and didn’t know what to do. He put his boat to the side and was about to jump from the river toward the land, but a knight emerged from the tree, looking at him.

"Participant, if you wish to forfeit the Trials, please hand me your card," the knight said and opened his palm.

The card was given to the 99 participants as their key to staying in the Trials. If they’re lost, their cards would be removed.

Luca gritted his teeth and stayed in his boat. He tried his best not to let him get swayed by the current and observed the situation.

"Hey, what is that?" Luca asked the knight, but when he turned around, the knight was nowhere to be seen. He frowned and debated what to do when the tentacle grabbed one of the participants and threw them away, disqualifying them from the Trial.

"This is madness," Luca whispered in horror.

Then, the voices of his group were heard closer to Luca. He gritted his teeth and was forced to ride against the waves. It didn’t take long before the other participants arrived and was horrified by the surprise.

"Young man, let us ride your boat," a participant yelled while trying to stay afloat in the water.

Luca pitied him, but that would hinder his chance of winning.

"Not a chance," Luca stated without mercy and left him. As he got closer to the Kraken, he looked at the clear water below to see if he could find the head but was surprised to see the tentacles emerging from the ground.

"What is going on?" Luca muttered and tried to think of a solution. None from Group 1 survived, which meant a vacant spot was empty, and anyone from other groups could take it.

And Luca wanted to be that person.

"Your tricks won’t work on me!" Luca shouted. He took out his dagger and attacked the tentacles.

Fast forward, Luca arrived at the finished line drenched in slime and in his arms were two tentacles he had cut.
