Chapter 348: The Pit
Chapter 348: The Pit
Felicia stared at her soft hands and the dirty sheets in front of her. She had never touched laundry before and didn’t know how to do it. Her eyes glanced at Piku and followed her movement to blend in.
"What do you want to talk about?" Piku asked with a smile, but her eyes remained on the sheets.
Felicia pursed her lips and wanted to ask what had happened in the Mystic pack, but if she did, it would make her suspicious. "Hmm, I just want to know your opinion about our pack," she asked timidly.
Piku stopped scrubbing briefly as her face changed to dread, but she immediately hid it with a smile. "Ah! Our pack is the next one after Sabrecrown. No matter what happens, I will stay here," she replied.
Felicia noticed that Piku looked forced to say those words, but she didn’t argue back. "I see," she stated with a nod.
"Nonsense!" Paku shouted with her hands placed on her hips. She looked at her twin sister with disgust and glanced at Felicia.
"Paku, let’s just drop it. Someone might hear you," Piku whispered nervously and looked around to see if anyone was nearby.
"We are alone; it’s fine," Paku shrugged and walked closer to Felicia. She eyed her intently from top to bottom. "I haven’t seen you here," she whispered, sniffing Felicia’s scent.
Felicia stepped back since she felt that Paku had a dominant and rebellious trait over Piku. She wouldn’t mind being friends with her if there was no upcoming war.
"I don’t go out much," Felicia replied, scrubbing the sheets, but Paku yanked her hand away and pulled her close.
"You don’t have calluses," Paku muttered with a furrowed eyebrow.
Felicia pulled her hand back and glared at Paku. "That is none of your business," she replied with a growl. She disliked how Paku touched her out of nowhere.
"Let me guess, you’re born into a rich family, but you were included on the list," Paku stated softly, and her aggressive facial expression softened. "I’m sorry, it must be tough for you, but we are still alive, and there are still more wolves who got it rough," she added before tapping Felicia’s shoulder.
Paku’s words made Felicia curious, especially the term ’List’, but she couldn’t simply ask them what it meant.
"Aww, don’t worry. We can earn by serving the pack house!" Piku said in a cheerful voice.
"That goes to all of us, but I can’t believe the Alpha would take their pack members’ wealth to prevent rebellion and fund the pack," Paku muttered thoughtfully and crossed her arms.
"But it’s for us as well. If our pack win the war, the Mystic pack will take over Sabrecrown, and we’ll strive!" Piku reasoned out and looked at the positive outcome.
"Are you sure, Piku? We are an omega, the lowest rank, and we will remain that way no matter what happens. It will just increase our workload," Paku sighed and turned her back.
Piku pursed her lips as her eyes started to become teary. Felicia went beside her and patted Piku’s shoulder.
"It’s alright, I’m sure everything will be fine, but I have one more question," Felicia stated while trying to assemble the pieces of information together.
"Sure, you can ask anything," Piku replied with wide, innocent eyes.
"What do you think of the New Monarchs?" Felicia whispered since she knew that topic was a bit sensitive to a pack that was against them.
Piku’s mouth hung open in shock. She glanced at Paku in panic since she didn’t expect Felicia to ask sensitive questions.
"I think we don’t have to talk about them," Piku waved both her hands in front of her to stop Felicia from asking further.
"I will answer that instead," Paku replied, but she remained with her back facing them.
"Paku! Stop it!" Piku argued, and this time, her voice rose up in annoyance.
"You want to chitchat with her, yet, you don’t give any decent conversation," Paku rolled her eyes and slammed the wood she used to beat the sheets. "If you ask about my opinion. Since they won the war before, it’s their right to lead the Werewolf realm. I believe that only the strong one will sit on the top," she explained intently.
Felicia was amazed at Paku and her perspective. "That’s amazing!" she exclaimed.
"Amazing? No, that’s like saying weak wolves stand no chance to lead," Piku pouted, disagreeing with her twin sister.
"Well, that’s how the world works, Piku," Paku glanced back, and her eyes were blazing with earnestness.
Piku’s shoulder slumped down in defeat. She knew she couldn’t do anything with her sister. She looked at Felicia with a sigh. "I guess the only thing I like about the New Monarch is having to marry your mate, unlike before, where arranged marriage was everywhere," she stated, returning to her work.
"Why do you ask these questions, Felicia? Have you become mentally ill after what happened to you? Let me suggest something," Paku walked toward Felicia, grabbed the collar of her shirt and pulled her close.
"What?" Felicia muttered as she glared at Paku.
"Don’t ever talk about the Monarchs or what’s happening in this pack. If you get caught, they will feed you to the wild dogs," Paku whispered threateningly. She let go of Felicia and composed herself before returning to her posts.
The three of them became silent after that conversation and finished their jobs.
...
’This pack is a mess,’ Felicia thought while she hung the sheets to let them dry. She pitied the wolves that were robbed of their lives and was forced to become an omega. She was busy finishing her work when she felt someone tapped her shoulder; it was Paku.
"I know you’re not from here. What do you want to achieve?" Paku’s eyes looked at Felicia with a wicked smile.
"What do you mean..." Felicia swatted Paku’s hand away and prepared to kill her if she exposed her identity.
"You can’t fool me, unlike my sister. I don’t have plans to expose your identity since it’s useless for us omegas, but I want a better life, Felicia. I will help you in exchange for me and Piku’s freedom away from this pack," Paku leaned closer and whispered those words sincerely. She had seen Felicia as a way to escape a terrible future they would have if they remained in Mystic pack.
Felicia pushed Paku away. She didn’t trust her yet but understood where she came from.
"I know you don’t trust me, and I don’t trust you either, but I am desperate to get me and my sister away from here. This pack is hell, especially when that fake Queen arrived!" Paku whispered with hatred. Then she pulled Felicia with her.
"What are you doing? We might get caught!" Felicia pulled herself back, but Paku’s grip was tight.
"Just come with me," Paku insisted and continued dragging Felicia.
Felicia was confused but curious as well. She let Paku drag her and was led back to the forest.
"I think it’s better to go here at night so no one can see us," Felicia suggested since the sun was still out.
"It’s better to go during the day since at night... it will be dangerous," Paku whispered and sped up since they didn’t have much time.
"Where’s Piku?" Felicia asked and glanced back.
"She’s cleaning," Paku replied. After that conversation, they stayed silent.
As they continued running, Felicia could smell an abnormal stench lingering in the air, but it vanished after a few seconds.
Paku stopped running and pointed at the massive pile of dried leaves at a single spot. At first, if you looked at it, nothing seemed strange, but if you examined it closer. There were tons of black ore scattered around.
"Look at that," Paku stated and stepped back while she looked around just to be safe. "We need to hurry up," she added.
"These ores cover-up scents, but why is it here?" Felicia whispered with a frown. She was about to step forward to inspect the dried leaves when Paku held her back.
"Don’t stand there, or you will fall!" Paku yelled and tugged Felicia back.
"What did you say!?" Felicia’s eyes widened as she immediately crawled to the edge and brushed the leaves away. She saw several flatted pieces of wood that were used as cover.
"Be careful!" Paku whispered in concern.
Felicia nodded and slowly slid the wood to the side. She saw a pit, but it was too dark to see what was inside. She didn’t have time to inspect when a terrible, rotting smell hit her nose.
"What the hell!" Felicia pinched her nose and gagged since it was too much for her system to take.
"We should go," Paku stated nervously, but Felicia was not done yet.
Felicia crawled toward the pit again, heightening her ability to see in darkness. Her body trembled when she witnessed a severed head of a woman staring back at her.
That was enough for Felicia to understand what was going on. She put the wood back in its place and covered it with leaves. She stood up and faced Paku.
"Tell me, what is this about?" Felicia muttered with a shaky voice. She already had an answer in mind, but she wanted to hear what Paku would say.
"They were servants killed by the previous Queen, Cinzia," Paku answered, gritting her teeth.
Both stayed silent as Felicia took the information in.
"You’re kidding me. There are tens of them in that pit," Felicia exclaimed in disbelief and was stunned at how Cinzia could be that cruel.
Paku shook her head, and with deep loathing, she replied. "There are 102 male and female wolves in total, and we might be the next one to add to that count."
