Chapter 299: The Stairs of Pain
Felissa was returning back to her room. Her shoulders were slumped from thinking that she needed to go back home. She couldn’t help but feel tired and wanted to sleep for the whole day.
"Lady, are you alright?" Vicenzo asked upon noticing her change of aura.
"Yes, Sir Vicenzo. I guess our time together is short. I’ll be returning to my pack in the next few days," Felissa stated softly, showing how she disliked the idea.
That made Vicenzo curious. He knew that Felissa was from the Midnight pack, 9th rank. He didn’t reply to Felissa’s words and continued following her.
Somehow, a part of Vicenzo was delighted that Felissa would no longer be around. Still, another part of him was concerned about her well-being, knowing that Fabio was lurking around.
Felissa’s chest felt the ache that Vicenzo didn’t respond to her. She felt discomfort, knowing that she was worth nothing to him.
’What am I going to do? I’m not his mate. Yet, I want him to be mine,’ Felissa thought, gripping her fist tightly. She was trying to subdue her emotions and fight her wolf, who was urging her to speak out about her feelings toward Vicenzo.
"Lady, please watch your step," Vicenzo stated when they descended the stairs.
Felissa returned to reality and turned around to face Vicenzo, but in doing so, she missed a step. She felt her body falling down the stairs, and unconsciously, her hand reached out to Vicenzo.
"LADY!!!" Vicenzo screamed with fear in his eyes. He reached out to Felissa, but he wasn’t able to grab her. Immediately, his protective instinct kicked in, and he launched himself.
Vicenzo wrapped his arms around Felissa’s body and made sure that the impact would be toward him. They rolled on the stairs several times before landing at the bottom.
"Kyah!" Felissa yelped and gripped Vicenzo’s chest tightly while placing her head in him. When she felt that they had landed. She raised her head and saw Vicenzo’s face an inch closer to her.
Vicenzo was winching his pain with closed eyes. He was trying his best to make his wolf heal his physical body faster. When he opened his eyes, Felissa was staring at him.
They were so close that they could feel each other’s breath. Their heartbeat became synced.
Felissa felt her body was on fire, burning from Vicenzo’s warmth, which made her want to get away and get some cool air.
"Sir Vicenzo, are you alright?" Felissa asked thoughtfully since Vicenzo received most of the impact.
"Yes," Vicenzo replied and stood up. His body was aching everywhere and perhaps broken a few bones. "Are you alright?" he asked.
"Yes, thank you," Felissa stated and sat up. She felt a bit of pain, but she could handle them. Her attention was focused on Vicenzo, and she felt guilty about the accident due to her clumsiness.
"That’s good," Vicenzo replied and pushed himself to stand. He wiped the dirt away and extended his hand to help Felissa.
"You don’t have to," Felissa stated and put her hand on him. She regained her balance and looked up into his eyes.
"It’s my job as a knight to protect you," Vicenzo replied nonchalantly as if it was the right reason to do so.
"So you only see me as a noble lady you need to protect, nothing more?" Felissa asked while trying to prevent tears from escaping her eyes. Even though she always knew that Vicenzo had no romantic feelings for her, she wanted to give her a shot, hoping he would one day like her.
"Lady Felissa, you are a close friend to the Monarch, and your status is higher than mine and most wolves in the pack," Vicenzo sighed and took a step closer. "You are my duty, Lady Felissa," he added, but his tone was different from his usual cold one this time.
"I see," Felissa smiled sadly. She felt like a thousand knives struck her heart, creating a series of pain she didn’t enjoy.
"We should go to the Theta to have you checked, Lady Felissa," Vicenzo stated, but Felissa shook her head.
"I like to go back to my chambers," Felissa stated, giving him a huge fake smile before turning around and walking through the hallway as if nothing had happened.
When they arrived in Felissa’s room. Vicenzo bowed since his job was done, and he was going back into his own room, but before he could go, Felissa stopped him.
"Sir Vicenzo, I have something to say," Felissa stated, taking a deep breath to gather her needed strength.
"What is it?" Vicenzo replied and turned around to face her.
"Marry me," Felissa said without pause. Her voice was firm and serious about her wants.
"Lady Felissa, I only want to marry my mate," Vicenzo replied, staring at Felissa for a few seconds.
"Am I not your mate?" Felissa asked, and that question made Vicenzo taken aback.
"Lady Felissa, I’m doing my job as a knight to protect you. "Please, don’t make it hard for me," Vicenzo stated sternly, turning around to leave without looking back. He ignored Felissa’s question and acted as if he didn’t hear them.
Although, this concluded that Felissa was serious about her wedding proposal to Vicenzo before.
Felissa closed the door to her room silently. She felt her heart break to pieces.
"Ah, it’s over," Felissa whispered as she slumped on the floor and leaned back against the wall. Somehow, she felt empty knowing she had no chance with Vicenzo even though he wasn’t her mate, but she slightly hoped he was the one for her.
Felissa looked at her hands, which were reddish from touching Vicenzo’s body. It was the first time she had experienced something like that with a man, but she noticed she was the only one feeling that well.
"Ah, I should distance myself and wait for my mate to take me," Felissa whispered and lay on the floor. She curled herself like a fetus for comfort while she let her body drift to sleep.
