Chapter 104: The Replacement Mate

Chapter 104: The Replacement Mate

Rosina smirked upon hearing what Pepe stated. She liked that he found her amusing since it meant that she had gotten his attention.

"Hmm," Rosina hummed and lifted her head to look into Pepe’s emerald eyes. "Your eyes are beautiful."

"Thank you," Pepe replied. His hand went to Rosina’s cheeks and caressed her soft skin.

The atmosphere between the two of them changed. It got erotic and intimate due to the closeness of their bodies, and they felt each other’s heat.

Rosina let her body press against Pepe, and the contact made their emotions fire up. Their breath hitched in lust and desire for one another.

"Rose," Pepe slowly whispered Rosina’s nickname. His eyes became hazy as he tilted Rosina’s chin while lowering his head.

Rosina closed her eyes, anticipating Pepe’s lips planted on her lips, but instead, she felt him kissing her forehead. She was baffled by his actions and looked at him in disbelief.

"I won’t do anything until you want me as your mate," Pepe smiled and patted Rosina’s head. He was showing his gentle side to her, which no one ever witnessed.

"But I’m not your mate. You know that," Rosina said with her eyebrows furrowed. She took a step back to have a good look at Pepe and saw that he was serious.

"Don’t you feel it?" Pepe stated in disbelief. He was confused by Rosina’s statement since he felt something more between the two of them.

"What do you mean?" Rosina asked and took a step back. Somehow, she felt fear in her chest. She was afraid that Pepe was her mate, and she didn’t know about it.

Pepe saw the distress on Rosina’s face. He thought Rosina felt the spark between the two of them the moment their eyes met back in the cells. He expected her to accept the mate bond, but it was the opposite.

"Don’t you feel that we might be good together? You are strong, a good partner for a King," Pepe stated. His cold demeanor came back to cover the hurt. He felt that he was indirectly rejected by Rosina.

"I see. I know it’s quite rare for mates to meet, and most wolves marry those they fancy or someone they connected with even without the mate bond," Rosina sighed deeply. She took a step forward and grasped Pepe’s hand. The fear inside her vanished and was replaced with compassion.

"But I still believe it’s better to wait for your mate. Maybe after a few years until you pick one to replace her," Rosina added, giving the widest smile she could muster. She didn’t want Pepe to feel that she rejected him for the reason that she didn’t want her special privilege to vanish.

Pepe looked at Rosina’s hand, grasping him. He could feel the spark ignited strongly to where their skin met, but he noticed that Rosina felt nothing.

"I understand, but that doesn’t mean I will give up on you," Pepe stated firmly. His eyes bore at Rosina with sincerity. He still believed that Rosina was his mate due to the sparks he felt, but he couldn’t understand why Rosina felt nothing.

"Hmm, it’s fine with me. After all, I’m stuck here. I can act as your mate and help you with your royal work until she arrives," Rosina giggled. She suggested the idea since she wanted to know the inner core of the 13th pack and be part of it. For her, having knowledge held power that could destroy a pack.

"Okay," Pepe agreed since he didn’t want to force Rosina to accept him, especially since they were still strangers. It would also be an opportunity for him to get to know Rosina deeper.

A thought came into Pepe’s mind.

"Rose, since we will be living and working together. I want to know more about you," Pepe said and walked toward the bookshelf that leads to his office. He gestured for Rosina to come with him.

"Like what?" Rosina tilted her head. She had expected Pepe to ask about her background in the first place.

"Hmm, your life back in your pack or you in general," Pepe stated while gesturing for Rosina to sit on the sofa.

"Ha..." Rosina sighed deeply before looking straight into Pepe’s eyes. Although she had a broad smile on her face, her eyes spoke something else.

"I don’t like talking about my life and open up about myself because I know if I talk, I’d break down," Rosina muttered while trying to compose her emotions. She was surprised that she could talk like that to Pepe without acting and covering her true feelings like she used to.

Pepe looked at her with a hardened expression. He didn’t know what to say since comforting someone was not in his vocabulary.

Rosina’s mind returned to her past, but she snapped out of it. She looked at Pepe and saw his expression.

"Ah! forget what I said. I can tell you a bit about my life, so don’t overthink," Rosina waved her hand in front of her face, trying to dismiss the topic about her.

"Hmm," Pepe hummed. He wanted to know more about her but didn’t want to force Rosina. In his mind, he wanted to gain her trust for him to open her heart.

Pepe’s eyes darted toward the silver chains dangling on Rosina’s wrist. It was supposed to keep her weak, but she looked normal.

"Well, since I’ll be working as a replacement. What can I get in return? Don’t forget I was kidnapped and you bought me. Stripping me from my freedom," Rosina stated with a smirk. She was teasing Pepe to lighten up the atmosphere in the room.

"What do you want?" Pepe replied.

"Ah..." Rosina was taken aback by his words. She didn’t think of anything at that moment, but she knew what she wanted.

"Then, could you please remove these chains? It’s quite heavy," Rosina extended her hands in front of Pepe. "It will be hard for me to work if I have these on me."
