Alpha Eric's Promise, Protecting those he loves -
Chapter 70
Chapter 70: Chapter 70
A New Challenge
Alex sat up, taking in a deep breath as he stared at the view outside. The pack’s territory stretched out before him, vast and open, with the mountains in the distance looming like silent guardians. He had always loved this place, its untamed beauty, its rugged strength—qualities that reminded him of his pack, his people.
But despite the peace that had settled over the lands, Alex could feel a stirring in the air. It was subtle, like the quiet before a storm, but it was unmistakable. Something was coming, and he could feel it in his bones. His Alpha instincts told him that this peace, though hard-won, might not last forever.
He stood and made his way to the balcony, his eyes scanning the land as if looking for any sign of trouble. The warriors were already awake, moving across the training fields as they prepared for another day of drills. The scent of fresh pine and the sound of rushing rivers filled the air, but there was an undercurrent of tension that Alex couldn’t shake.
Behind him, Selene entered the room, her presence like a calming balm to his restless thoughts. She could always sense when something was bothering him, even when he tried to hide it.
"You’re up early," she said, her voice soft but filled with concern. "What’s on your mind?"
Alex turned to face her, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before he sighed. "I don’t know. There’s something... something doesn’t feel right. The peace we’ve worked so hard for—it doesn’t feel like it’s going to last."
Selene walked over to him, resting a hand on his shoulder. "We’ve fought so hard for this peace, Alex. You’ve worked tirelessly to make sure the pack is strong. We’ve built alliances, we’ve solidified our borders, and we’ve trained our warriors. We’re ready for anything."
"I know," he said, his eyes darkening with worry. "But sometimes, peace doesn’t last forever. And there are forces out there that would love to see us fall."
She studied him carefully, her brow furrowing as she realized the depth of his unease. "You think someone is planning something? A rogue attack? Or worse?"
Alex didn’t answer immediately. He wanted to say no, to reassure her, but deep down, his gut told him that something was coming—a challenge, something bigger than anything they had faced before.
"I don’t know what it is," he said finally, turning to look at the pack grounds once more. "But I can feel it. And I need to be prepared. We need to be prepared."
Selene squeezed his shoulder, offering him a soft, understanding smile. "We’re in this together, Alex. You don’t have to face this alone."
Alex nodded, grateful for her presence, but the weight on his shoulders was heavy. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of approaching footsteps. He turned just in time to see his Beta, Mark, entering the room with a look of urgency on his face.
"Alpha," Mark said, bowing his head respectfully. "There’s something you need to see."

The Messenger
Alex followed Mark out of the room, his mind racing with possibilities. What could it be? Another rogue attack? A challenge from a neighboring pack? He had learned to expect the unexpected, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was coming, it wasn’t going to be simple.
They made their way down the stone hallways of the pack’s headquarters, past the warriors who greeted them with nods of respect. The air was filled with a sense of purpose, the steady rhythm of the pack going about their daily tasks. But the tension in Alex’s chest only grew as they neared the gathering area where Mark had told him to go.
When they arrived, Alex’s eyes were immediately drawn to the figure standing at the center of the room. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and wore a cloak that covered most of his features. His presence was commanding, yet there was something unsettling about the way he stood—like a shadow, lurking in the corner of the pack’s world.
"Who is he?" Alex asked, his voice low.
"I don’t know," Mark replied, "but he claims to have important news. Says it’s for you, Alpha."
Alex stepped forward, his senses on high alert. The man raised his head as he approached, his dark eyes gleaming with an intensity that sent a chill down Alex’s spine. The stranger’s eyes seemed to pierce through him, as if reading his every thought.
"You must be Alpha Alex," the man said, his voice deep and steady, with a hint of something almost... knowing. "I’ve come with a message."
"What message?" Alex asked, his tone sharp. "Who are you?"
The man smiled, a cold, knowing smile that made Alex’s hackles rise. "My name is Malachai. And I come from the far reaches of the Shadowlands."
"Shadowlands?" Selene repeated, her brow furrowed in confusion. "Where is that? I’ve never heard of it."
"Few have," Malachai replied, his gaze flicking to her. "But that’s not why I’m here. I’m here because of you, Alex. And because of the future of your pack."
Alex’s heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"
Malachai stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that seemed to resonate in the very air around them. "I’ve been watching you, Alpha. I’ve seen your rise, your strength. But there are those who want to see you fall. They want to destroy everything you’ve built. The rogues, the traitors, the ones who think they can take your place... they are coming. And this time, they won’t stop until they have what they want."
Alex’s heart pounded in his chest. "Who is it? Who is behind this?"
Malachai’s eyes glittered with a dark knowledge. "The Shadowlands are ruled by those who have long been forgotten. And they do not forget easily. You and your pack... you’ve made enemies, Alex. Enemies who will stop at nothing to bring you down."
The weight of his words hung in the air like a heavy fog, settling over the room and making it hard for Alex to breathe. He turned to Mark, searching his face for any sign that this man was lying, but Mark only looked equally bewildered.
"Why should I trust you?" Alex asked, his voice steady despite the storm of questions in his mind. "What do you want from me?"
Malachai’s smile widened, but there was no warmth in it—only a chilling, calculating gleam. "What I want is simple. I want you to understand that your reign is not as secure as you think. Your enemies are gathering, and they will come for you when you least expect it. Prepare, Alpha, for the darkness that is about to descend upon your pack."
With that, he turned and began to walk away, his cloak swirling around him like smoke. As he disappeared into the shadows, Alex’s heart raced, his mind spinning with the implications of what he had just heard.
---
A New Era of Uncertainty
"What just happened?" Selene asked, her voice tight with concern as she moved to Alex’s side.
Alex stood frozen, staring at the spot where Malachai had been. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, each more disorienting than the last. The Shadowlands. Enemies he didn’t know existed. A darkness he wasn’t prepared for.
"I don’t know," Alex replied, his voice low and heavy with realization. "But I know one thing. We’ve been at peace for too long. And that peace is about to end."
The reality of it hit him all at once. The peace that had settled over Crescent Moon was fragile, a delicate balance that could be shattered at any moment. And now, with the threat of this new enemy looming on the horizon, Alex knew that the fight for the pack’s survival was far from over.
He turned to Selene, his face set with determination. "We need to prepare. We need to be ready for whatever comes next."
She nodded, her eyes filled with understanding. "Together, we will face it. Whatever it is."
And with that, Alex knew the calm that had settled over Crescent Moon was only temporary. A storm was coming—and they would have to face it head-on.
