Chapter 74: Chapter 74- A Man’s Hate

SIMON~

"Annihilated!" Luther repeated, his face twisted like he had just been insulted.

"Yes," Gabriel confirmed, turning his eyes to him.

"The I.O.W.A can’t be afraid of the thing it’s meant to stop." Luther spat.

"Who said anything about Fear."

"You might not have said it but deep down you are scared," Luther said, making sure to keep his voice respectful, I had never known his father to be one who tolerated disrespectful behavior.

"Only a madman wouldn’t be scared of the threats we face."

"I.O.W.A is not a man, it’s a body, a body built to defend humanity against the threats that are wolves." Luther spat, my eyes gleamed as I heard Luther’s words, amusement filling me to the very brim.

"Then what do you propose we do?" Anthony asked as he leaned back in his seat, the only other man enjoying the exchange almost as much as I was. Luther looked hesitant, he placed his hands on the table and let out a loud breath before he looked back at his father and said.

"Jacob Col—" Before he could fully say the name Gabriel interrupted.

"You want us to work with a criminal?" Gabriel asked angrily.

"He’s a genius."

"He’s insane." Gabriel argued, "He took eight lives, experimented with them, and tossed their bodies when they no longer had any use."

"Since when did we regard wolves as lives?" Anthony interjected, Gabriel shot him a warning glance. He smiled at Gabriel but continued talking.

"With all due respect and I mean this as no insult to you mister Gabriel." He started, and Gabriel relaxed into his chair deciding to hear him out as he explained the reason behind his words "Any chance they are giving they cause the deaths of men, women, children. We cannot sit back and give them the same title we give our brethren, they are not men, they don’t have lives all they are, are monsters."

The amount of hate for wolves in this room was suffocating, being the driving force behind every man who occupied one of these chairs. Lancel Dane, lost his mother and father when they were caught in the middle of a scuffle between two wolves, Hendrick Barrick watched his sister get eaten by a wolf, Gendry Gustavo, a wolf raped his fiancee and killed her, Frank Daniel, his prom was invaded by young wolves trying to make a name for themselves, James Burne, watched his best friend die in a fight against a wolf who had been disguised as a man, Henry County, was left with a permanent scare by a wolf who wanted to show his dominance, Anthony Fischer whose home town was raided by an army of stray wolves, Gabriel Gaines who himself said. He needed no reason to hate wolves but he did regardless, and finally, there was Luther Gaines, I had yet to find out what drove him but I was sure it would soon be common knowledge.

"Jacob Colt is an enemy of the wolves, the second they find out about our collaboration they will declare war," Gabriel warned. I was honestly indifferent, maybe other wolves still held their hate for him but I could honestly care less, the world wasn’t fair so there was no point in getting upset over or resenting the actions carried out by unfair men or wolves.

They’ve been declaring war on us, every day they breathe they declare war on us, sitting back and acting like it’s all ok will only get more innocent people killed."

"He’s a criminal, An insane scientist is who you wanna trust?" Gabriel asked

"No one said anything about trust."

"Then what are you saying?"

"A criminal he is but s magnificent mind like his should not be rotting behind metal bars," Luther answered.

"Isn’t that where he belongs?" I finally spoke.

"What if we replace his bars with a lab, have him live out his sentence in service of a greater cause," Luther said, It was clear his mind had already been made up. This interaction wouldn’t hinder the things he had already set in motion, it was merely a formality.

"You’ve made up your mind?" Gabriel said.

"Yes," Luther answered, knowing he had won. Gabriel sighed.

"Ok then, I rather you do it under my surveillance than behind my back." Gabriel finally gave in. Not long after that, the meeting was adjourned and we were all allowed to get back to our offices and continue our work.

——

Luther had been leaning against the frame of my door for well over five minutes, watching me silently as I ignored his antics, till eventually, I had finished the work I had been occupied with and had to look at him.

"What do you want?" I asked dryly, A smile curved his lips like a child who had just won an award and I almost let out an exhausted sigh. He pushed himself out of the door and walked in.

"I wanna talk to you about your position here," He said with a smirk.

"You don’t mean it?" I asked, faking intrigue but my tone remained indifferent.

"I understand my father trusts you completely and you are too wed, my sister."

"Neither of those things is any of your concern."

"Unfortunately they are."

"In what way?" I asked, curious as to what went on in the mind of this man.

"They are my family." He answered calmly.

"And?"

"I don’t trust you.", I held back the chuckle that almost escaped my lips and looked deep into his eyes.

"Well, I think you should take those words to someone who actually cares about your opinion," I replied, a faint smile curving his lips.

"You misunderstand how much my opinion means to my father."

"So you came here to brag about being daddy little boy." I teased, not even for a second taking the man in front of me seriously, he chuckled but didn’t reply, instead, he changed the subject.

"What do you think of Jacob Colt?"

"He’s a mad man, is there any other way to think of him?"

"A weapon, a weapon that’ll allow us to take out those beast." He said with his eyes fixed on mine.

"A mad man will be a mad man whether behind bars or in a lab."

"You underestimate the power of a common enemy."

"No, unfortunately, I understand that perfectly what I seemed to have underestimated was how much you knew about the man you call a weapon."

"He will wipe them out."

"Maybe, but this is the same man who used his children as bait so he could come in contact with wolves, You have no idea what goes on in his head yet you are willing to put your faith in him, I commend you for that, But, A Gun without a trigger or a handle isn’t a gun." I said as I stood up "Hate is a funny thing, men think it drives them but it just leads them to make stupid decisions till eventually they realize they were never in control. Lock up my office when you leave." I said as I handed him the keys and walked out.
