Chapter 72- Luther Gaines
Chapter 72: Chapter 72- Luther Gaines
AUTHORS POV~
The gentle clicks of his shoes sounded as he walked through the empty halls, his grey glare looking through the glass of every door he passed. The whole building was insanely quiet at night with the only people around being security or men who hated their homes, the emptiness and quiet soothed him, when there was nothing, everything seemed to make sense to him.
It didn’t take long for him to find the office he had been looking for, the door was open and the bright light that illuminated the inside blessed a small part of the hall with its bright glow. He walked to the door and looked into it, Gabriel Gaines sat behind a desk, his eyes fixed on a small frame he held in his strong veiny hands.
"Father." He called, Gabriel took his eyes off the frame and looked at the man who stood at his door.
"Luther." Gabriel greeted with a small smile on his lips, he put down the frame and leaned back in his leather chair, as he looked upon the son he had not seen in years he felt a feeling of relief.
"I’m home Father." Luther said as he walked into the office and took one of the vacant seats in front of Gabriel’s desk.
"Took you long enough." He responded calmly as he reached under his table and pulled out an unopened bottle of scotch "I’ve waited for you to come back to share this with you." Gabriel said, pure joy evident in the tone he spoke and the look in his eyes, a sharp smile curved Luther’s lips.
"Mother’s last gift." He spoke softly as he stood up and carried two glasses from the wooden shelf that occupied one corner of the office "It is an event worth celebrating." Luther chuckled as Gabriel poured the drink into the cup, they both watched as the dark liquid filled the small glass.
"So, tell me about your travels."
"You say it like I was out enjoying myself," Luther said as he put the cup to his lower lip and took a small sip, the liquid went down his throat with a gentle burning sensation causing him to let out a quiet satisfied groan as he rested in his chair and placed the cup on the table.
"Four years away from all this is enjoyment," Gabriel added.
"To you perhaps." Luther hastily disagreed "But every moment I spent knowing those creatures ran around freely was like torture."
"You don’t know the meaning of torture."
"You don’t know me, Father. I would rather burn down their world than spend another day acting like it’s all ok." Luther said, every word that left his mouth like poison to the hearts of men.
"Feelings like that don’t get the job done," Gabriel said as he stood up and looked through his window, Luther stood and walked to his side.
"Do you see that?" Gabriel said, pointing at the men who were at the lowest level of the building, walking to their cars and chatting without care.
"Tools," Luther said.
"Men." Gabriel corrected sternly "You are my son, But any man who sees others as tools simply because he’s above them loses the right to be called a man."
"That’s just your opinion."
"And I’ve heard of this organization, which makes my opinion fact."
"Fact, conspiracy, we both want the same thing," Luther said as he stepped away from the window and sat in Gabriel’s seat.
"And what is that?"
"A world where humans are at the top, where they need not fear anything," Luther said as he crossed both his legs on top of Gabriel’s table.
"You make it sound easy."
"You make it seem hard." Luther countered, slightly glancing at his father.
"I know you Luther and I know you are too far gone for me to do anything about your ideals."
"Good," Luther said and stood up.
"You’re still here." Someone said from the door, both of them turned to see who it was and we were met with the familiar face of Simon who was currently in the form of John.
"Who are you?" Luther asked with a small smile.
"I could ask you the same thing," Simon replied as he walked into the room, his steps filled with confidence and an air of assurance surrounding him, Luther felt something from him, something threatening, something primal and unrealistic.
"He’s my son," Gabriel said as he sat back down in his now vacant seat "And that’s John."
Luther’s eyes glimmered as he realized who the man who stood before him was.
"So you’re my brother-in-law-to-be." He said, his words friendly but tone threatening, Simon wasn’t phased as he stared into Luther’s grey eyes and a smirk curved his lips.
"Do you have a problem with that?" Simon smugly asked, Luther gritted his teeth but stepped back and threw his hands into the air.
"None." He admitted, Simon nodded as he turned to Gabriel who sat enjoying the brief exchange of the two men who stood before him. One was a wild card who always proved up to the task and the other an enigma who always brought forth results, both had their strengths and weaknesses, and both of them were irreplaceable assets in their way.
"Mr Gaines, I’ll be taking my leave now," Simon announced with a smile on his face, Gabriel nodded and Simon proceeded to leave but not without shooting one more glance at Luther.
"He’s —" Luther dragged on as if trying to find the words to describe the man who just left their midst.
"A puzzle." Gabriel completed.
"Are we sure he’s on our side?" Luther said, suspicion evident in his voice.
"What other side is there to be on?"
"I don’t know." Luther admitted "But there’s something about him, Something that makes me feel uneasy." He turned back to Gabriel and picked up his cup, chugging down the remainder of its contents then he slammed the cup back onto the table.
"See you tomorrow Father." He said then walked out. Once again being the only one in the office Gabriel picked up the cup and inspected it, cracks spread from the bottom and branched out to the top yet it remained intact and even the table had been firmly dented by the base of the cup.
"Luther." He mumbled to himself.
