Chapter 43: Chapter 43- Our Enemies

DAMON~

It had been a week since the news about the return of the mad wolf had spread, and like wildfire, it was incredibly hard to stop or control. The fact that he was bold enough to personally attack our borders made the residents of Howlcreek feel unsafe, It didn’t help that he had also put a war veteran in the hospital, even though said the veteran had been able to recover from his injuries and returned to his duties, it still made it seem like there was a shift in the balance of power.

I looked through the window in my office, watching my city’s light flicker brightly in the dark of the night, peaceful, How I wished it was always like this but unfortunately peace could never compete with the greed of men.

"What do we do?" I heard Daniel say from behind me, I turned to face him before I answered.

"I don’t know.", I walked back to my desk and sank into it "Where is Carlos?"

"He’s calming down a fight that broke out in the left wing of the training grounds.", I sighed my mind drained from exhaustion.

"How many fights does it add up to?"

"Six since the word got out, ten since you gave them the order to stand down."

"Fuckk!!" I exclaimed "Why can’t they just listen without acting like children," I growled.

"What were you expecting?"

"No expectations, only hope," I replied calmly as I pressed my fingers to my temple trying to relieve myself of the faint headache I was feeling.

"Wolves are confrontational creatures, if you tell us not to protect our home then we’ll tear it down, that’s just the way it is," Daniel explained as he sat down.

"We can’t let that happen, we can’t let the pack tear itself apart." I muttered tiredly, leaning into my desk and focusing my eyes on the ceiling "We’re in the middle of a rock and a hard place."

"Even still, we’ve pulled out of worse."

"We’ve never faced anything like this, we’ve never had to fight someone like Simon or the fucking Mad Wolf."

"We don’t understand our enemies," Daniel sighed.

"And according to what Julian said, the attack was a solo act and had nothing to do with Silver Hollow or Simon."

"I don’t know if that’s good or bad."

"Both of them together would mean we had two formidable opponents on the same team while them being apart means we have two formidable enemies to worry about," I explained.

"We’re not sure they aren’t working together," Daniel added.

"I trust Julian’s words."

"Still, Even if what he says is true, we can’t drop our suspicions because of the words of a defeated wolf," Daniel replied calmly then looked at me.

"What?" I asked.

"I think I may have a solution to one of our problems." He said with a smile curving the sides of his lips.

"What is it?"

"The Moonlit Gala." He answered. As I heard those words my mind immediately travelled to her but I needed to focus so I leaned back and focused my eyes on him.

"I planned on canceling it this year, it isn’t a good idea to have a mating festival when we have war at our doorstep," I said, locking my fingers together.

"That’s the exact reason we need it, we need to make it the biggest one yet, a spectacular to take the people’s minds off everything that’s going on, a chance for them to relax and focus on something other than the war that’s coming.", I thought about it, he was right the only reason people were fighting was because they were pent up with no way to release their frustration. I released my hands and relaxed back into my seat.

"You’re right, it would take their minds off everything that’s going on," I said.

"So that’s a yes to the Moonlit gala?"

"It is," I replied and he jumped to his feet with a smile on his face.

"I’ll start getting everything set so just lay back and relax, I’ll take care of everything." He said as he joyfully skipped out of my office, exiting as Carlos was walking in.

"Why is he so happy?" Carlos asked as he walked closer to my desk.

"I just greenlighted the Moonlit Gala."

"A festival? Isn’t that incredibly poor timing?" He blurted out and immediately realized he spoke out of term so he stepped back, "Slip of words." He apologized.

"It’s ok, I thought the same too, but he made a pretty good point about how people need a distraction to release their frustrations," I responded. He pulled back the chair and sat down.

"What if we get attacked in the middle of the festival?"

"Doing that would be declaring war, and even though Silver Hollow has made it clear they want that they don’t want to be the one to make the first move—"

"They wanna force our hands." Carlos completed. Now that I really thought about it, it was weird how they didn’t want to make the first move, We didn’t outnumber them by so much that they’d be scared to lose to our numbers and Simon was said to be the strongest wolf so obviously he wasn’t scared of fighting against me, so why had they not acted yet, I put myself in the shoes of my enemies, if I was in their position why would I hesitate to fight, was it because I wasn’t sure of victory, No that wasn’t it, Wolves wouldn’t follow an Alpha who was scared of losing, So wh—, my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Carlos phones ring.

"Sorry." he said as he stood up and answered the call "Yes—This is he—What!—It can’t be—Fuck!—Thanks for notifying me," he said then cut the call and put the phone back in his pockets, I saw the horrified look in his eyes and I as much as I didn’t want to know what had caused it I had to ask.

"What’s wrong?"

"Silver Hollow just took over GreyFure."
