Chapter 32: Chapter 32- Overtime
ZARAH~
I signed my name at the bottom of the file and pushed it away as I let out a satisfied sigh, that was the last of the things I had to do today, I looked around the office and almost everyone had left, the only people still present where interns and Micheal who had been locked in his office for the entire day. I stood up from my desk at the same moment that Micheal was stepping out of his office.
"Hey!" I greeted him with a warm smile, he smiled back as he walked to me with his hands in his pockets.
"Were you about to leave?" He asked.
"Yeah, I just wrapped up the last thing I had to do, what about you?" I asked as I put on my coat and picked up my bag.
"Well, I have this pitch coming up so I may have to sleep here," he said with a chuckle.
"Shit, sorry bout that."
"Nah it’s ok, I didn’t have any plans so it’s alright," he said as he leaned against my desk.
"Hmmmmm."
"What?" He asked with a chuckle as he heard my skeptical tone.
"I refuse to believe you had no plans."
"I didn’t—" he was about to say something else but stopped when I squinted my eyes with suspicion.
"Ok you caught me, I wanted to see a game with Thomas," he said with his hands raised in surrender.
"Do you want company?" I asked.
"Nah, don’t wanna keep you from Elliott." he declined.
"It’s ok, I hired a baby sitter, I’ll just call her to stay the night with him, she wouldn’t mind" I explained as I pulled out my phone, a smile crossed his lips, and his blue eyes sparkled with joy as he pushed himself off the desk.
"Ohk I’ll see you in there, I’ll order pizza." He said excitedly as he rushed back into his office.
I was right, she was glad to have an excuse to be away from her house so it actually worked out for her too, I walked into Michaels’s office and he wasn’t behind his desk, I looked back outside to search for him when I heard his voice from behind the table.
"I’m over here!" he called, I walked around the table and immediately saw him sitting on the floor, surrounded by towers of boxes and magazines and his laptop in front of him, He had taken off his suit and folded the arms of his shirt so they reached his elbow, he had unbuttoned the top three button and I unintentionally my eyes began to trail down from his neck to his exposed chest.
"wow!" I exclaimed as I knelt down in front of me "Isn’t this a little overkill?"
"It’s not, it’s all necessary research." he said then took his eyes off his laptop and pointed at all the books that surrounded him "This overkill is the reason we have so many clients," he explained with a smile.
"Wow," I said quietly as I picked one book up "John Gevan, Art of the Pitch, First edition" I read aloud then looked at him "Really?"
"It’s a good book" he confirmed then stopped what he was typing and looked at me "Do you wanna have your account one day?" he asked.
"yeah kinda, I have a degree in marketing and when I came here I thought that’s what I’d do, but I kinda got lost then I got content."
"So you lost interest?"
"No, I just— I was just ok with the stability I had achieved"
"There’s nothing wrong with wanting more, even if you start and get your account it doesn’t mean you have to stop the job you currently have." He said calmly, sometimes he made it very easy to forget we were the same age, the things he had accomplished already someone wouldn’t be able to measure up to till they reached the grave, he reminded me of someone else but before my mind could drift off to thinking about him I pinched myself and looked back at Micheal.
"you’re right." I said with a warm smile as I opened the book "Property of The Wilson" I read aloud then looked at him with a smile "Do you trust fund kids inherit books as well?" I asked jokingly.
"No." He chuckled before he answered, "It was my dad’s."
"Was?" I asked with a saddened look in my eyes, beginning to feel stupid for the unwarranted joke I had just made.
"Yeah, He passed away" He answered, as I heard his words the office Suddenly fell into an awkward silence, and the chill of the Air conditioner became evident, I was about to reach for his palm when I heard a knock at the door of the office.
"Sir, Delivery for you." one of the Interns announced through the phone on his desk.
"I better get that," Michael said as he stood up and walked out of the office. Being alone in the office while Micheal dealt with the delivery I decided to take a look at what it was he had been writing, I turned the laptop over to myself and began to read the paragraphs he had composed so far, the more I read the more my admiration for him increased, it was like reading a movie script, captivating and informative, I had been so entranced in what I had been reading that I didn’t notice Daniel had walked back in the office and was now behind me.
"How is it?" He asked, his sudden question snapped me away from the screen as I turned my head to him, He leaned down placed the three boxes of pizza down, and went back to where he had been sitting.
"What do you think?" he asked with his blue eyes fixed on me as he picked out a slice from one of the boxes and bit into it.
"It was—" I searched for the word that would perfectly describe what I had just read but couldn’t find it "It was everything it was supposed to be, they would be fools not to give you their account," I said with a smile.
"Thanks."
