Chapter 104: Chapter 104- Shadows Of Doubt
Zarah’s pov
Michael forced me to sit down and passed a cup of cappuccino to mf.
I sat so still, so scared, still holding the crumpled letter in my hands. The weight of what had just happened felt heavier by the minute. Damon was dying. I didn’t know what that meant, not really, but I felt it in every fiber of my being. And one thing was sure — I still loved him and he was the father of my son.
I had to be there for him. But now, there was something additional — something I hadn’t told Michael yet. And I needed to tell him as a part of him kept tugging in my heart telling me something was off.
Michael was pacing, hands rubbing the back of his neck as if he were trying to shake off the pressure that had filled the room.
" Zarah, " he said, his voice soft and low. " You can’t just go running to Damon like this without knowing what’s going on. We don’t know if that letter is real, we don’t know why this is happening, and we sure as hell don’t know what your mother is doing in all of this."
At the mention of my mother, I sat up as Michael’s words hit me like a brick and I saw that his questions were meaningful, and my breath caught in my throat. I hadn’t even told him about her. Just telling him that she came to visit.
" I need to tell you something, " I said, feeling a tight knot in my stomach. I wasn’t sure how to even start. The truth was tangled up in confusion, fear, and something differently I couldn’t even name.
" What’s it, Zarah "
I signed. The memory of my mother’s sudden appearance felt too raw, too strange. She had shown up out of nowhere — like she always did when it was least anticipated, with the kind of authority only a mother could have, despite all the times we’d been split.
" She — she came to see me, " I said, my voice shaking. " Two days ago, I think, before I even got the letter. My mother. She told me to go to Damon. Told me I had to be with him, that it was critical. She was kind of forcing me."
I looked up at Michael, watching the shock move across his face.
Also, after what felt like a while, he shook his head slowly. " Your mother? Are you serious? "
I nodded, unable to speak as I watched his response. My mother had always been a puzzle. She had faded from my life when I was young, leaving behind only questions and a trail of riddles. But now she was then, forcing me to find Damon before it was too late.
" Zarah " Michael’s voice was softer now, but there was still doubt there. " I don’t know what’s going on with your mother, but I’ve always known she’s been a stranger and kind of off, forgive me."
My heart skipped a beat. Michael had never been one to hold back what was on his mind, and I knew he wasn’t saying this to hurt me but still, it hit me hard.
" She never cared about Damon before, " he continued, his tone harder now. " And now she just shows up, out of the blue, telling you to go to him? There’s something off about this. Something doesn’t sit right. "
I could feel the fear rising in my chest again, but I pushed it down. I couldn’t let myself fall apart. I had to stay strong.
" You don’t understand, " I said, my voice breaking. " I’ve spent my whole life trying to find out why she left, why she faded. And now she’s telling me this. It’s like she knew something I didn’t. She told me this wasn’t just about Damon. It’s about me, too. I’ve to go. I’ve to be there for him. "
I stood up from the office, pacing around the room, my mind racing. I needed to be with Damon, needy to understand what was happening, but Michael wouldn’t understand.
Michael didn’t move.
" Zarah " His voice was firm, almost angry. " I don’t trust your mama. Not after everything that’s happened. You don’t know what she’s capable of. And now she’s pulling you back into this mess, and I’m telling you — it’s not safe. "
I stopped dead in my tracks, the air in the room growing thick with pressure. Michael was not backing down, and I could feel my heart sinking lower with every word. " What do you mean, ’ not safe’? She’s trying to help me. She’s trying to help Damon! "
He shook his head, his eyes filled with concern — and something different. " You don’t get it, do you? " He took a deep breath, stepping near to me. " Your mother, Zarah — she’s been involved with things you don’t even know about. Dangerous things. Things that could put you in trouble way if you follow her lead. "
I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I wanted to argue and wanted to tell him that my mother wouldn’t do that, but a small part of me, a small part I hated, wondered if he was right.
" Michael, I don’t know about how things are happening., " I murmured, my voice shaking. " I just want to be with Damon. I need to know if I can save him. "
Michael stepped back, his face softening for a moment before it hardened again. " I understand that you’re scared, Zarah. But I’m telling you, you need to stay away from your mother. I don’t trust her. And I don’t trust whatever game she’s playing. "
I opened my mouth to say something, but the words caught in my throat. There was no denying it.
" Michael " I started, but I couldn’t find the right words. The tight knot of fear in my stomach twisted tighter.
He reached out, placing his hand gently on my arm.
" I’m sorry, Zarah, but I don’t trust your mother. " His voice was firm now, and I could see the determination in his eyes. " And I don’t want you getting involved in something you don’t completely understand. Not when Damon’s life is on the line. "
But now? Now I was torn between trusting the woman who had always been a riddle to me and the one person who had always been there when I needed him.
The room felt colder, the weight of Michael’s words pressing down on me.
" I need time, " I said still, turning down from him. " I need to think. "
I had to follow my heart. No matter what.
