Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Tempting Her
"Aunt Li, it’s no longer the old society, don’t call me that anymore," Yan Zhen Guo said with a hint of seriousness in his tone.
When Yan Zhen Guo turns cold, he tends to be quite intimidating, and now with a serious expression on his face, Mrs. Li, who initially wanted to refute him, hesitated and nodded, saying, "Um... then, what should I call you?"
Yan Zhen Guo replied, "Just call me by my name."
"Yes," Mrs. Li nodded timidly. In front of this new son-in-law, she always felt a bit scared, but when she looked up and saw that Gu Fuqiao wasn’t afraid in front of Yan Zhen Guo, she felt relieved.
When Gu Fuqiao went downstairs, the dining table on the first floor was already full. A middle-aged woman wearing a plain qipao with permed short curls was well-maintained, and the person sitting next to her was Ouyang Qing.
Gu Fuqiao remembered what Mrs. Li had said, that the original hostess dearly loved Ouyang Qing; it appeared to be true. With such a loving demeanor from the original hostess, anyone unaware might truly think Ouyang Qing was her daughter.
While Gu Fuqiao walked up to the table and sat down, the original hostess never even looked at her. As for the original host father, he was eating his meal quietly without saying a word. However, Ouyang Xuan, sitting across from Gu Fuqiao, couldn’t resist speaking. He smiled and said, "Ah Jiao, you’ve finally come back for a visit, why don’t you greet your auntie?"
When Ouyang Xuan spoke, Gu Fuqiao realized she was actually sitting across from this creepy cousin. Suddenly, she found it difficult to swallow the food in her bowl.
Before Gu Fuqiao could speak, the original hostess raised her head to look at her and then said, "Ah Jiao rarely comes back, there’s no need to make it a big deal, we’re not outsiders, what’s the need for greetings?"
Initially, Gu Fuqiao thought Mother Gu didn’t like her, but she didn’t expect Mother Gu to speak up for her. It seems that one would always like their child. Ouyang Qing, being her niece and constantly by her side, is naturally likable too.
Ouyang Xuan didn’t expect Mother Gu to say that. He paused, then tried to smooth things over, saying, "I didn’t consider things thoroughly."
Though Ouyang Xuan apologized, Gu Fuqiao couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a tinge of malice in his words. She looked up at Ouyang Xuan again, but his face remained gentle, with no trace of malice at all.
Did she misjudge, or is this creep just good at pretending?
Gu Fuqiao found the family dynamics here to be very indifferent; during the meal, not a single person spoke. She disliked this oppressive environment, but fortunately, everyone’s meal ended quickly.
Gu Fuqiao and Yan Zhen Guo, being the newlyweds, were visiting her family for the first time, so they had to leave after dinner.
Father Gu mentioned that he had books to study and returned to the study early, while Mother Gu wanted to say something to Gu Fuqiao, but was interrupted by Ouyang Qing repeatedly.
Ouyang Qing’s actions, in Gu Fuqiao’s view, were merely like a child afraid of losing the adult’s affection. She didn’t argue with Ouyang Qing, especially since a mother knows her child best. She might fool Yan Zhen Guo, but she can’t fool Mother Gu.
Gu Fuqiao and Yan Zhen Guo first went back to the former owner’s room to rest.
Yan Zhen Guo wasn’t shy at all; he casually lay down on the pink bed of the former owner and began to nap.
Gu Fuqiao turned her head. For some reason, seeing such a rough man lying on such a pink bed amused her... While this bed was not small, it seemed it couldn’t accommodate such a big man like Yan Zhen Guo.
"What are you looking at me for?" Yan Zhen Guo hadn’t fallen asleep. He seemed to feel Gu Fuqiao’s gaze, his eyes remained closed, but his words startled her.
"I’m not looking at you, I’m reading," Gu Fuqiao looked carefully at Yan Zhen Guo. Seeing that he didn’t open his eyes, she smugly continued.
Who knew, at her smug moment, the man on the bed suddenly opened his eyes and patted the spot beside him: "The bed is very soft, wanna lie down for a bit?"
Yan Zhen Guo didn’t use much force, but the soft mattress trembled under his pat.
Lying on the bed? Who knows what could happen there.
"No, no." Gu Fuqiao shook her head and said earnestly to Yan Zhen Guo, "I’m not tired yet."
Seeing Gu Fuqiao shaking her head so consistently, Yan Zhen Guo suddenly remembered how she tossed and turned under him, a smile unconsciously tugging at his lips: "Really not coming up, it’s really soft."
Yan Zhen Guo looked a lot like a big bad wolf.
Gu Fuqiao surely didn’t trust him. She placed a book on her chest and said to Yan Zhen Guo, "Don’t even think about tricking me up there! Today, at my house, behave yourself!"
After that, Gu Fuqiao no longer spoke to Yan Zhen Guo. She enjoyed reading; seeing plenty of books here from the former owner, she planned to take a couple back to broaden her horizons.
After ignoring Yan Zhen Guo, he also lay back down, occupying two-thirds of the bed.
The bookshelf was filled with various types of classics and magazines. Gu Fuqiao briefly glanced around, discovering some middle school textbooks among them.
She pulled out a couple of textbooks. The illustrations in the language books were similar to those in her primary school textbooks, carrying a strong oil painting style and an eighties-specific feel. Just like the painted murals on the family planning walls in her village when she was a child.
Gu Fuqiao roughly looked through the textbook’s content. Some texts she hadn’t seen before, so she decided to read them as novels. After a while, someone knocked on the door.
Gu Fuqiao put down her book and walked outside, suddenly seeing Mother Gu standing at the door.
"Ah Jiao, come out. Mom wants to talk to you about something," Mother Gu looked up at her, a strange expression in her eyes.
"Okay." Seeing Yan Zhen Guo still asleep, Gu Fuqiao closed the door and went upstairs with Mother Gu.
Mother Gu led Gu Fuqiao to the first room on the third floor, which was much larger than Gu Fuqiao’s room and appeared well-decorated, but it didn’t seem like it’s where Mother Gu and her husband lived.
"Ah Jiao, actually, your mom regrets letting you get married," said Mother Gu after closing the door, a complex emotion on her face. "When your grandma made this decision, I should have opposed it, but thinking about it, our family status wasn’t great either. Marrying a soldier could improve much, but now, I feel I’ve wronged you."
