Chapter 37: Changing Mindset
Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Changing Mindset
Miss?
So this kindly-faced aunt wasn’t the original owner’s mother, but rather the housemaid?
A young man wearing a Zhongshan suit came out from inside the house, seeming no older than twenty-five, looking even younger than Yan Zhen Guo.
He nodded at Yan Zhen Guo and greeted him, "Brother-in-law, you arrived early!"
Brother-in-law? So this person must be the original owner’s cousin, no wonder he looked somewhat similar to the original owner.
"No need to be so formal, cousin. Just call me Zhen Guo," Yan Zhen Guo said.
"Alright." Cousin Ouyang Xuan nodded and joked as he glanced at Gu Fuqiao, who was standing quietly behind Yan Zhen Guo, "Ah Jiao, why aren’t you talking to me? Did you get upset that cousin couldn’t attend your wedding last time?"
Wedding? Gu Fuqiao had no clue... it was simply because she wasn’t familiar with this distant cousin.
"No, nothing like that... I just haven’t returned for a long time." Gu Fuqiao smiled and said.
"Yes, you’ve been gone for over a month, aunt and uncle miss you dearly, and Qingqing also thinks of you a lot!" Ouyang Xuan quickly invited them inside.
Mrs. Li approached Yan Zhen Guo, intending to help him carry his things, "Son-in-law, let me help you with that!"
"No need to trouble yourself, Aunt Li. These things are light; I can carry them myself. It’s the new society now, no need for formalities," Yan Zhen Guo politely refused.
The items were indeed very light for Yan Zhen Guo.
But combined with the odds and ends, they weighed at least a dozen pounds, and Mrs. Li was so thin that Gu Fuqiao felt she couldn’t manage them.
"But..." Mrs. Li hesitated.
Gu Fuqiao spoke up, "Let him handle it. He’s strong enough."
Mrs. Li heard Gu Fuqiao speak and reluctantly nodded.
Once Yan Zhen Guo and Ouyang Xuan had entered, Mrs. Li quickly followed behind Gu Fuqiao.
She touched her apron and said to Gu Fuqiao, "Miss, seeing you living well with the son-in-law now puts my mind at ease."
After speaking, Mrs. Li’s eyes welled up.
Gu Fuqiao looked at Mrs. Li and understood that Mrs. Li probably cared for the original owner like her own daughter.
No wonder she was so concerned.
"Don’t worry," Gu Fuqiao reassured Mrs. Li, "Yan... Zhen Guo treats me very well. He even gave me candy this morning and always saves good food and drinks for me. It’s very much like the old days at home."
"Yeah... I also see the son-in-law as a good man, better than the suitors Madam introduced to you before," Mrs. Li said, wiping the tears from her face.
Truth be told, Yan Zhen Guo was indeed a good husband... it’s just that such a good husband doesn’t treasure it, and eventually, he will only be someone else’s.
"Yes, so rest assured, Mrs. Li." Gu Fuqiao handed the handkerchief from her bag to Mrs. Li.
Mrs. Li took it and wiped her eyes, "Miss, seeing this, I feel relieved, but you must cherish him well!"
Cherish him well?
Gu Fuqiao paused slightly.
Of course! Yan Zhen Guo was now her husband... In the original story, it was because the female supporting role caused trouble that they divorced. If she didn’t make trouble... then Yan Zhen Guo would be her rightful husband!
At that moment, Gu Fuqiao seemed to realize something, and she smiled sweetly at Mrs. Li, "Yes, I will cherish him."
Gu Fuqiao followed Mrs. Li into the house.
This small house had three floors, with an attic at the top. After the previous turmoil, this wealthy household had suffered quite a bit.
The interior decoration had become plain, not quite matching the elegant exterior, but even so, the items in this home were still placed very tastefully, everything was in order.
Yan Zhen Guo was chatting with a middle-aged man in a grey-blue Zhongshan suit; this man wore glasses and had a very scholarly aura.
The middle-aged man saw Gu Fuqiao and frowned slightly, "Ah Jiao, go and call your mother down."
Looking at the man, Gu Fuqiao guessed he must be the original owner’s father, so she nodded and said, "I’ll go right away." As she turned around, Mrs. Li grabbed her.
Turning back, Gu Fuqiao saw Mrs. Li giving her a look.
She followed Mrs. Li to the staircase, where Mrs. Li whispered to her, "Miss, Miss Ouyang is upstairs, it might not be pleasant if you go up now. I’ll go call them for you."
Miss Ouyang was probably the Qingqing that the cousin mentioned earlier.
"Mrs. Li, why shouldn’t I go up?" Gu Fuqiao was still puzzled. She was the only daughter in the family, and logically, her parents should cherish her.
"Ah." Mrs. Li sighed and said, "Miss, have you forgotten? Madam prefers Miss Ouyang; she doesn’t like being with you. But... it would be great if the old lady lived with us."
"The old lady..." Gu Fuqiao thought, there seemed to be an elder in this family, she was likely to be Gu Fuqiao’s matriarch.
"But now that the Miss is married, Miss Ouyang won’t be able to bully her... I’ve heard that the old lady’s health hasn’t been good lately, she might move back home. Then, Miss Ouyang won’t live so comfortably." Mrs. Li said and was about to go upstairs.
"Wait, Mrs. Li." Gu Fuqiao followed Mrs. Li up the stairs.
It was still early before dinner; she couldn’t just go downstairs and chat with Yan Zhen Guo, the original owner’s cousin, or father, in case she slipped up: "Mrs. Li, is my room still there?"
Mrs. Li had always felt for this child who wasn’t loved by her father or mother, she nodded and said, "Yes, I clean it every day, I’ll take you there now."
Hearing Mrs. Li offer to take her was great since she was utterly unfamiliar with the layout.
Mrs. Li led Gu Fuqiao to the second floor and to the innermost room, then stepped aside.
"Miss, take a look, it’s exactly the same as before." After saying so, Mrs. Li added, "I’ll go upstairs to call Madam and Miss Ouyang."
Gu Fuqiao nodded; once Mrs. Li left, she reached out and opened the door.
The room was similar to the one the original owner had at Yan Zhen Guo’s, but larger and had its own bookshelf which housed quite a few books.
Gu Fuqiao entered the room and rested at the desk for a while.
There was a window at the desk, and when opened, revealed a Huang Jue tree, which spread a faint fragrance in this season, soothing the soul.
As Gu Fuqiao admired the view outside the window, the door behind her was opened.
"Sister, how does it feel to be married?"
Gu Fuqiao turned and saw a girl in a beige dress walk in.
