Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Sure Enough, There Are Ghosts
"I need to talk to you about something," Yan Zhen Guo said as he walked out of the bedroom wearing a tank top.
Gu Fuqiao saw that he had put on some clothes, and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
It’s really not great to have a muscular naked body wandering around every day; wearing clothes is definitely better!
"I need to go out to handle something before the Dragon Boat Festival; I should be back around then. It’s not a big deal," Yan Zhen Guo said while walking to the dining table.
"Okay." Gu Fuqiao nodded, but inside, she was overjoyed—Yan Zhen Guo wouldn’t be home, meaning she could enjoy a few days of leisure!
In fact, that was indeed the case.
After Yan Zhen Guo left home, Gu Fuqiao continued to sleep past the wake-up call and rose around eight or nine o’clock. Alone at home, she was too lazy to cook and went straight to the dining hall to eat.
Since she was friends with Su Jili at the dining hall, whenever Su Jili served her food, he naturally scooped generous portions.
After a day or two of eating like this, Gu Fuqiao felt like she might be gaining weight.
That afternoon, Gu Fuqiao arrived at the dining hall quite early; the food had just been prepared, and there weren’t many people there yet. Seeing her come so early, Su Jili couldn’t help but tease, "You’ve been coming early these days, aren’t you afraid of getting hungry at night eating so early?"
"I don’t do any physical labor, why would I be hungry?" Gu Fuqiao rolled her eyes at Su Jili, then handed him her lunch box, saying, "The usual."
"Got it!" Su Jili deftly scooped out a portion of meat and vegetables for her.
Just as he handed the food to Gu Fuqiao, she saw a man and a woman walking out of the dining hall.
The woman was none other than Wang Mei.
Wang Mei exchanged a few whispered words with the man and then left the dining hall.
As for the man, Gu Fuqiao thought he looked somewhat familiar.
"What are you looking at? Aren’t you gonna take your food?" Su Jili waved the lunch box in front of her, seeing her distracted look.
"Oh." Gu Fuqiao snapped back to reality, took the lunch box from Su Jili, and continued to glance at the man who had been talking to Wang Mei.
The more she looked, the more familiar the man seemed.
"Are you being a creep, staring at Wang Chuan like that?" Su Jili teased with a mischievous smile.
Gu Fuqiao suddenly remembered that the man she saw at the hospital yesterday looked very much like Wang Chuan!
Quickly turning around, she ignored Su Jili and asked, "Is that man Wang Chuan?"
"Yeah, what’s up?" Su Jili was puzzled by her seriousness.
"Didn’t he leave the dining hall yesterday afternoon?" Gu Fuqiao asked.
"Yeah, he had to go out for something yesterday afternoon," Su Jili said, thinking and asking, "Wait, how do you know?"
"Su Jili, aren’t we friends?" Gu Fuqiao asked, looking at him.
Though confused by her sudden question, seeing her seriousness, Su Jili nodded, "Yeah, what’s wrong?"
"I need your help. See if Wang Chuan has been acting suspiciously lately," Gu Fuqiao said outright.
She thought a man’s secretive visit to the hospital was definitely odd, especially considering his recent close interaction with Wang Mei—something was off.
It would be normal for Wang Mei to sincerely date him, but Wang Mei tried to manipulate her yesterday and was mingling with other men at the same time.
In palace dramas, it’s common to use secondary male characters to cause trouble and do bad things.
"Alright." Su Jili agreed readily, but then felt something was off. "Wait a minute, Wang Chuan is my bro; why should I help you against him?"
"Why not help me? I’m doing this for your good!" Gu Fuqiao thought for a moment then blurted out, "I saw him where he shouldn’t have been yesterday; I suspect he’s been misled into doing something bad."
"Where? Was it at the dance hall?" Su Jili speculated wildly.
"No." Gu Fuqiao waved her hand but, seeing his curiosity, added, "Close enough. So I’m asking you to keep an eye on him—you’re helping him!"
"You’ve got a point. If I ask him directly, he probably won’t tell me." Su Jili nodded after stroking his chin, "Okay, if anything happens, I’ll let you know!"
"Great! I’ll be coming to the dining hall every day before the Dragon Boat Festival!" Gu Fuqiao said.
After talking for a while, Gu Fuqiao left with her lunch box.
There weren’t many people in the dining hall yet. Seeing Wang Chuan walking in after finishing his work, Su Jili felt something was indeed off.
Wang Chuan was walking with his head down, looking distracted.
Inwardly, Su Jili confirmed, suspicions were valid!
"Wang Chuan." Su Jili called out, wiping his hands on his apron before walking over to Wang Chuan.
He carefully observed Wang Chuan.
Seeing this, Wang Chuan took a step back in confusion, asking, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"No... nothing, just feeling you look like you’ve got something on your mind lately," Su Jili said, smiling and showing his bright white teeth.
"What’s there to worry about?" Wang Chuan said, raising his head to glance at Su Jili before looking away, "I’m just going to put on an apron, gotta get busy."
With that, he headed straight into the kitchen.
Watching Wang Chuan’s back, Su Jili nodded reaffirmingly.
Su Jili thought Wang Chuan was acting differently than usual, suggesting something was indeed amiss!
While washing up at night, Su Jili noticed Wang Chuan, who usually slept early, hadn’t gone to bed yet.
Heading out to check, he found Wang Chuan using the corridor’s public phone.
He seemed stealthy, covering the phone as he spoke, "Got it, I’ll get what you need. It’s almost lights-out, hanging up."
With a click, Wang Chuan ended the call.
Turning around feeling relieved, he became tense upon seeing Su Jili standing there.
"Are you here to make a call too?" Wang Chuan asked, looking at Su Jili.
"No, I couldn’t sleep so I came out for a smoke; didn’t expect you to be here," Su Jili replied, pulling out a Hongmei cigarette and offering one to Wang Chuan.
Wang Chuan waved it off.
"Look, buddy, you seem worried," Su Jili said, lighting the cigarette with a match.
"I’ve got something going on at home, but it’s no big deal," Wang Chuan replied before returning to his dorm.
Su Jili didn’t light the cigarette, flicking the lit match to extinguish it.
"He’s definitely up to something, no doubt about it. Can’t let you make a mistake, buddy," Su Jili muttered, shaking his head.
