Chapter 20: 20 Chapters Attentive only when caring

"Do you want to do something meaningful?" Yan Zhen Guo swiftly pinned Gu Fuqiao beneath him.

Gu Fuqiao was stunned, not expecting to be pushed onto the bed over a disagreement.

"No... I’m just tired... going to sleep!" Gu Fuqiao closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.

Yan Zhen Guo looked at the woman beneath him, smiling slightly before releasing her and lying next to her.

After this, Gu Fuqiao didn’t dare speak to Yan Zhen Guo again, unsure if he was actually asleep.

...

Gu Fuqiao slept soundly last night but was awakened by faint sounds early in the morning.

Opening her eyes, she saw a man fastening his belt beside the bed.

A crisp sound snapped Gu Fuqiao wide awake.

She sat up straight, groggily looking at Yan Zhen Guo.

"It’s five-thirty," Yan Zhen Guo said after checking his watch.

"So early..." Gu Fuqiao grumbled, glancing at Yan Zhen Guo, "I’m going back to sleep."

In her memory, she hadn’t woken up this early since graduating from elementary school.

Back then, waking up early wasn’t about diligence; she had more energy as a child, less need for sleep. But growing up had changed that!

Five-thirty was just way too early.

"Did you forget what you said yesterday?" As Gu Fuqiao lay back down, a chilly voice sounded in her ear.

Yesterday? What happened yesterday...

Lying in bed, Gu Fuqiao squinted and thought carefully before suddenly remembering.

She’s the supporting female character, Yan Zhen Guo is the male lead! She... she’s supposed to please the male lead!

And she promised Yan Zhen Guo she would cook!

Gu Fuqiao sprang up, threw off the covers, slipped on her shoes, and headed to the kitchen.

"Would you like noodles or porridge for breakfast?" Gu Fuqiao asked as she opened the rice jar in the kitchen.

Yan Zhen Guo entered the kitchen, glanced at the pile of wood behind the stove, and said, "Start by learning to light a fire."

"Learning now? There’s not enough time, right?" Gu Fuqiao hadn’t been up this early in ages, she couldn’t help but yawn after speaking.

"You don’t need to walk before you learn to run?" Yan Zhen Guo looked at her as if he was gazing at a lazy person.

This made Gu Fuqiao unhappy!

"I’ll learn! How hard can it be?" Gu Fuqiao furrowed her brows and immediately moved behind the stove.

Soon, Gu Fuqiao realized that what seemed easy and smooth in Yan Zhen Guo’s hands was like climbing Everest for her!

But fortunately, her teacher was the male lead, Yan Zhen Guo!

Gu Fuqiao barely managed to learn how to start a fire.

She looked at the flame and joyfully said to Yan Zhen Guo, "How about that? Easy peasy!"

Gu Fuqiao’s left cheek was still slightly dirty, but it didn’t stop her from enjoying her accomplishment of lighting a fire.

"It took an hour," Yan Zhen Guo said, standing at the doorway with his arms crossed.

"Huh... an hour?" Gu Fuqiao clearly didn’t expect she’d spent an entire hour... learning to light a fire?

A skill almost unnecessary in modern times.

And she’d taken a full hour to learn it.

"From now on, you’ll get up at six to cook. I need to leave by seven," Yan Zhen Guo told Gu Fuqiao.

Six... six o’clock... are you kidding...

But wait... an hour passed, meaning it’s six-thirty...

And only half an hour left, how could she cook?

"Not enough time today," Gu Fuqiao stood and spread her hands.

"So we’ll go to the cafeteria this morning," Yan Zhen Guo said as he walked to the living room, picked up his military cap, put it on, and coldly said, "No repeat."

Gu Fuqiao turned and saw the neatly dressed Yan Zhen Guo speaking in the direction of the door.

"Were you just talking to ghosts?" Gu Fuqiao knew Yan Zhen Guo was talking to her.

But hearing his tone and having learned to light a fire in an hour, she felt a little rebellious inside.

"There’s no such thing as ghosts," Yan Zhen Guo flatly denied Gu Fuqiao.

After speaking, he looked at Gu Fuqiao in her light blue pajamas.

Gu Fuqiao noticed his gaze and quickly covered her chest.

Yesterday, she thought she’d sleep alone, so she didn’t wear a bra as she usually does.

And these summer pajamas weren’t particularly thick.

"Ten minutes to get ready," Yan Zhen Guo said, ignoring Gu Fuqiao’s actions.

Gu Fuqiao heard his words and realized he intended her to accompany him to the cafeteria.

After all, in his eyes, she’s still useless.

Gu Fuqiao quickly got ready, the injuries on her inner thigh mostly healed with medication, but she still chose to wear a skirt.

After all, skirts don’t rub against wounds.

Though only six-thirty, soldiers from the family quarters were already heading out.

Several people greeted Yan Zhen Guo.

A few wives send their husbands off, and acquaintances on their paths exchanged hellos.

Living in a cold, modern society, Gu Fuqiao rarely witnessed such scenes... when she did, it was back in the ’90s when she was young.

People hadn’t grown so indifferent back then; no one was glued to their phones all the time.

Watching these warm scenes, Gu Fuqiao’s lips unconsciously curled slightly upward.

"Why are you smiling?" A man’s voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts.

Now out of the family quarters, Gu Fuqiao inhaled two breaths of the chilly summer morning air.

With a slight smile, she said, "Don’t you think it’s nice? Lively and harmonious."

Yan Zhen Guo didn’t understand the ’harmonious’ part but grasped the ’lively’.

She said she liked the liveliness... but he remembered Gu Fuqiao disliked him hanging out with his brothers.

Said it was crude, noisy.

Not only did she dislike it, but she avoided it.

Yan Zhen Guo’s gaze contained a hint of surprise when looking at Gu Fuqiao.

Seems Chen Bing was right... Pay attention to women, and they’ll behave.

"Oh, I forgot to mention something," Gu Fuqiao suddenly recalled the fabric tickets.

She needed to make pajamas for Yan Zhen Guo, so might as well buy some fabric.

"Do we have fabric tickets at home?" Gu Fuqiao didn’t find any when searching for pajamas last night.

Perhaps the original owner wasn’t mindful, and Yan Zhen Guo had them.

"Why the sudden interest?" Yan Zhen Guo looked at her inquisitively.

Gu Fuqiao was startled by his gaze.

She knew there was a big difference between her and the original Gu Fuqiao. Yan Zhen Guo, an ace researcher, would surely notice.
