After Transmigration, I Picked Up A Husband and Daughter -
Chapter 152 Turnaround
Chapter 152: Chapter 152 Turnaround
With every strike, Lady Zhao’s blows were accompanied by dull thuds and tremors in the air, but even such violence couldn’t break the unshakeable bond of affection between mother and daughter.
Time seemed to freeze until Lady Zhao, drained of both physical strength and rage, finally ceased her assault, her heavy breathing laced with the arrogance of a victor.
"Remember this, behave yourselves from now on! If there’s a next time, see how I’ll deal with you!"
After saying this, Lady Zhao casually tossed the wooden stick aside, her threatening words piercing through the fragile hearts of the mother and daughter like ice.
They clung to each other, tears swirling in their eyes, but they dared not cry out loud, because of their silent agreement, to protect their two younger sisters who might still be sleeping soundly in their dreams at this moment.
Da Ya’s shoulders trembled slightly, and her tears finally slid down her cheeks, as she asked softly, "Mother, when the village chief asked us why we wouldn’t split the family, why didn’t you tell him the truth?"
The question was like a sharp blade, gently cutting open the softest part of Xie Xinghua’s heart, intensifying the pain.
Through blurred tears, Xie Xinghua looked into the distance, her voice filled with indescribable bitterness, "If we were to split, what would I use to feed you?"
This question had been asked by her to herself over countless silent nights, yet the answer was always so cruel and hopeless.
In Da Ya’s eyes, there was a mixture of confusion and resentment, "But if we did split the family, at least we would have some land. You could stay at home to take care of father, and I along with the second and third sisters could work the fields. It has to be better than being bullied day after day, right?"
Her voice was soft but revealed a longing for a better life.
As tears fell like pearls off a broken string, Xie Xinghua faced her daughter’s simple and direct question, her mind a whirlwind of emotions, yet she couldn’t easily explain the complexity and helplessness of the world.
She knew that even if they truly split the family, what awaited them was just to jump from one firepit into another. With barren land, meager harvests and strained finances, ensuring the family’s warmth and food would become a problem.
Meanwhile, the soft lamplight shone on a tidy room, where Jiang Ziling took out a pair of meticulously sewn cloth shoes from the needle basket and gently placed them before Su Yu.
"Try these on, I just finished them today."
His voice was gentle and full of anticipation.
With delighted surprise, Su Yu took them, immediately captivated by the fine craftsmanship. The stitches on the shoes were neat and uniform, the lines smooth, clear evidence of their sturdy durability.
She happily slipped on the new shoes, which fit perfectly, with a thick sole that made every step indescribably comfortable.
"I never would have thought, you, a man, would have such delicate skills. These shoes are not only beautiful but also practical, truly perfect!"
Su Yu’s praise brought a faint blush to Jiang Ziling’s cheeks, and he replied somewhat shyly, "As long as you like them, Ah Yu."
Su Yu’s joy was evident: "I like them very much, thank you, Ziling."
The new shoes not only warmed her feet but also her heart. She twirled around the room, her happiness seeming to infect the entire space.
And Xixi, not to be outdone, hopped over to Jiang Ziling, her big watery eyes filled with hope, silently asking, "Daddy, where’s mine?"
Jiang Ziling affectionately pinched her tiny nose, his smile warm and indulgent, "Don’t worry, Xixi, Daddy will make you a new pair very soon."
This promise, like a ray of sunshine in the winter, lit up the little one’s face and also warmed their simple but loving home.
Xixi revealed a content smile on her face after hearing the answer, her clear eyes twinkling with the purity and joy unique to children.
She spun around lightly, her fine hair gently flying with the movement, coating it with a faint gold luster in the afterglow of the sunset.
With small, bouncing steps, she resumed her path to the backyard, where a lively flock of chickens and ducks was waiting for their little master, making a raucous cacophony of quacks and chirps, adding vitality and bustle to the tranquil rural courtyard.
Su Yu sat quietly beside a simple but clean wooden table, holding a plain porcelain cup in her hands, filled with water freshly drawn from the well, still cool to the touch.
She took a light sip, the crisp sensation seemingly instantly moistening her throat and slightly easing the worries in her heart.
Afterward, she turned her gaze tenderly toward Jiang Ziling, her tone gentle yet with a hint of concern that was barely perceptible, and slowly began to inquire, her voice full of care and consideration for him.
Jiang Ziling shook his head, conveying a sense of relief, as if he truly had been able to lay down the heavy burden on his mind.
A gleam passed through his eyes, and the corners of his mouth lifted in a light smile that contained anticipation for the future and acceptance of the present.
"Not at all, I actually feel much more relaxed,"
The words flowed naturally from his mouth, simple yet profound.
Hearing this, Su Yu felt faint relief, responding softly, her voice warm and resolute, as though allocating a promise to herself as well as to Jiang Ziling.
"That’s good to hear."
These three words, plain yet full of deep affection, signified acceptance of their current circumstances and hope for the life ahead.
In her heart, a plan was taking shape silently.
She envisioned that when spring returned and flowers bloomed, Jiang Ziling’s leg would have healed, and they could hand in hand enter the lush woods to hunt and gather valuable herbs, exchanging them for a more stable livelihood, ultimately leaving this land filled with complex emotional entanglements.
However, thinking of Jiang Ziling’s deep affection for his family, especially for his elder brother, she couldn’t help but hesitate.
If the main house could break free from the elders’ control and establish itself independently, that would be ideal. Yet, the harsh reality made her sigh inwardly, her spirit willing but her strength insufficient.
The sigh in the depths of Su Yu’s heart was as light as a feather yet weighty, laden with helplessness towards life and longing for the future.
She was aware of the adage "A tree dies when moved, but a person thrives with change," yet she felt more understanding and sympathy for Xie Xinghua, the woman who bore the family’s burden and struggled through hardship day after day.
After all, in such circumstances, every decision had to be made with the utmost caution.
After careful consideration, Su Yu realized it wouldn’t be fair to lay all the blame on Xie Xinghua.
As the head of the household, Xie Xinghua not only had to care for her husband, long bedridden from illness, but also had to single-handedly raise three young children. With the weight of life’s pressures, each choice had to be made with utmost prudence, for fear the slightest misstep could plunge the family into a desperate plight.
This hardship was difficult for outsiders to comprehend.
Therefore, Su Yu silently made a wish, hoping that one day in the future, they would welcome a turn of fortune.
However, all these plans and hopes were premised on the full recovery of Jiang Ziling’s leg injury, something that couldn’t be rushed or forced.
