After Apocalypse, I Got Rich With Superpower -
Chapter 111 - 109 Building a House
Chapter 111: Chapter 109 Building a House
They had just finished building the workers’ quarters, and with experience this time, they built the houses in three rows forming a quadrangular courtyard structure, arranged in a square. All of which were two-story buildings, with two rows on either side and one row in the middle, making three rows in total. Each floor had rooms, amounting to dozens of rooms that were relatively uniform in size.
There was a dedicated water room in the front and back middle, with both hot and cold water, and equipped with washing machines and shower rooms.
Outside the water room, there was a terrace and clothes racks for drying clothes, which were conveniently placed and included a dryer as part of the comprehensive facilities.
Each bedroom had its own toilet and shower room—you could use them however you wanted. If you didn’t like washing in your room because it felt too damp, you could go to the water room where the water flow was stronger and washing felt more refreshing.
These three rows of houses were actually gender-segregated, with the middle considered for supervisors’ residence. In the future, it was planned that high-level superpower users like Shi Lei and their relatives would live in the central main building.
In the courtyard, three rooms were built to function as a kitchen, each as big as a dining hall, sufficient for cooking and dining; the freezers used were commercial-sized, and everything was modernized.
"So many lice you don’t itch, so many debts you don’t worry" — since the money was already spent to this extent, and the construction was done, it was better to do it well in one go. It was more cost-effective than feeling unsatisfied later, having not enough space to live, and having to spend money to rebuild under higher costs and inconvenience.
The equipment inside was also complete. As the weather grew warmer and everything dried, people could move in, which made commuting to and from the worksite more convenient, especially since No.9 Farm was quite far from No.7 Farm and traveling back and forth was too time-consuming.
The remaining people needed to build the boundary walls and increase the electric grid to prevent mutant animals from coming over.
Gao Wenbin established a public service point at No.9 Farm for recruiting long-term and temporary workers, as there were not enough hands for all the work.
The base would prioritize selecting a batch of hardworking and reliable people to come over, but they could not bring the elderly or children, per the Base Commander’s orders.
One cannot always exploit the honest, and the orphanage was a necessity, especially during those particularly hard years, but times had changed and it wasn’t as hard anymore. It was unfair to have Li Pan support the elderly and children any longer; benefits should not be taken advantage of like that.
Only able-bodied adults were needed, and only superpower users; ordinary people were ineligible to come as they did not meet the requirements.
Panpan Farm was known throughout the base for its good treatment, but not everyone could get in—the Base Commander restricted eligibility.
The development of the farm had reached a stage where it wasn’t just about Li Pan anymore; it concerned the well-being and sustenance of everyone in the base.
Unknowingly, as they worked, almost half of the base’s supply of grains, vegetables, and fruits were produced by Panpan Farm, with only a small portion coming from other farms.
Most of the output from these other farms was either kept for their own use or sold at high prices to the rich district. The base couldn’t fault them for this.
Only Panpan Farm had been honest from the beginning, selling grains and all its produce at fair prices to the base.
The other farms had long begun cooperating with the rich district, selling at higher prices than what they offered to the base. The base couldn’t compete with them and had no choice but to accept this.
Now, with the addition of No.9 Farm, if it could develop further in the future, the base could at least secure half more food income, ensuring that everyone in the city was well-fed and clothed, devoid of worries about basic necessities.
The Base Commander openly favored Li Pan, which everyone acknowledged. Even if there were complaints, no one dared to speak up—who would want to go hungry?
The recruitment process was handed over to Gao Wenbin to oversee, with Zhang Yu assisting from the side. She was particularly sensitive to people’s intentions of good and evil, which meant they did not have to worry about spies infiltrating.
Gao Wenbin did not recruit particularly strong and formidable individuals; instead, he recruited former team members who had retired, some of whom were injured and couldn’t afford further medical treatments. Since they knew each other well from their past teamwork and had no family or livelihood, this opportunity provided a timely aid and support among brothers, like sending charcoal in snowy weather.
Injuries were not a problem; Li Pan could provide treatments. They all had superpowers, and their combat abilities were not low. They were all well-vetted over the years, and their integrity and responsibility were unquestionable.
Although they were a group of disabled soldiers, they were not going to trouble Li Pan too much in the later stages; Gao Wenbin had considered all aspects thoroughly.
Burdened with families yet excellent at work, they chose not to employ them, fearing future complications that might trouble Li Pan; if one disobeyed, a whole group could follow suit in uproar.
The list of these people was also provided by the Base Commander, and had been vetted beforehand; indeed, they hadn’t changed, only lived rather harshly, quick with their hands and feet, and only those with clean backgrounds were sent to work.
They would all start as temporary workers, with a contract signed annually; those who performed well could stay, and those who did not were free to leave. The farm did not owe wages, and the conditions were made very clear.
The various management regulations on the farm became increasingly standardized and orderly, with Shi Lei and others overseeing them, leaving no chance for loopholes.
In the future, these high-level superpower elderly would take up management responsibilities; it was impossible for Li Pan to worry about everything alone, she couldn’t finish all the tasks even if it exhausted her.
In the future, the farm would provide daily necessities and work clothes every quarter, but nothing extra. Wages and bonuses also had set rules, based on performance and work achievements.
This time, Gao Wenbin, Jiao Ming, Qin Jianzhong and others had been busy for several days filling all the loopholes in the farm’s regulations. They printed out a form and placed it in the canteen and office area. The subsequent contracts would be both electronic and paper, each person would receive a copy to ensure they understood the farm’s rules and regulations.
Li Pan looked at them and extended a thumbs-up, "You guys are impressive, making everything so complete."
"The building at the base is also finished now, where will people live now that we have more people?"
Only us old folks will live there for now, the newcomers can stay in dormitory buildings. Where they wish to go on days off is not our concern, if they want to stay at the base they can rent their own places; we shouldn’t manage too much, it’s too much burden on you. They’re all adults, not children. Let’s set the rules during this wave, as long favors are granted, grievances arise, too much control is not beneficial in the long run."
Qin Jianzhong also advised Li Pan not to be too kind, never buying everything or managing everything. Over time, people might feel entitled to it, not realizing it’s a privilege.
Li Pan nodded, "Okay, I’ll remember that, I’ll listen to you guys."
"That’s right."
The intent of Gao Wenbin, Qin Jianzhong, and others was to take this opportunity with the farm expansion to establish all the rules and regulations, and implement a scientific management pattern.
The deserved benefits would be given without falling short, but with reason and evidence, to satisfy and comfort the employees.
Seeing everything so well managed, Li Pan felt considerably more relieved.
Taking advantage of some free time now, she marked the remaining Spirit Plants, making them easier to maintain and cater to their meticulous needs.
Xue Dong was learning smoothly on his end, calling Gao Wenbin and the others daily to ask about progress, and after much discussion, made modifications to the farm.
The city wall was still under construction, preparing to build a factory next, with additional equipment to be added and eventually calibrated among other things.
After the factory was built, they would first raise dairy cows; it wasn’t time yet to start using machines, so Xue Dong was not in a hurry to return.
This year was mainly about doing some preparatory work, figuring out how to use the machinery, checking if there were any errors during operations, and needing professionals to continue with the adjustments. People from Dongshan would come to help get the factory running, and they had to stay until Xue Dong returned next year.
All this equipment was purchased with money, which was why there was such a rush to build the buildings.
