Chapter 97: WHY DOES MY HEART NOT LISTEN TO IT?
As night descended, Astrid’s anxiety grew. Julian was still not back from the so-called place he had told her he was going to.
She called him but didn’t get a response from him at all, another sigh escaped her lip as she looked around and then she called it a day.
With a heavy sigh, she gathered her belongings and stepped out of the company.
"Larry, I am leaving," Astrid announced, her voice laced with a hint of exhaustion.
Larry sprang into action. "Ma’am, the boss asked me to ensure your safe passage home," he said, his eyes locked onto hers with a mixture of concern about how exhausted she looked.
Astrid’s gaze drifted to her mind already at the hospital with her ailing mother. She needed to go visit her again.
"Larry, I need a favor," she began, her tone low "Can you help me keep a secret from your boss?"
Larry’s eyebrows shot up, surprise etched on his face. "Ma’am, I am grateful to help you, but...," he hesitated, weighing the potential risks. "You know what will happen if the boss finds out."
Astrid’s lips curled into a reassuring smile. "I promise it’s nothing that will jeopardize your position, Larry. I just need you to take me somewhere without disclosing it to your boss." Her eyes sparkled with pleasure.
Larry’s confusion deepened, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape clause.
"If you’re not going to take me to my usual drop-off, then perhaps you should head home,"
Astrid continued, her voice firm but gentle. "All I ask is that you keep this little detour between us. I will ensure I am home on time."
Larry’s eyes widened, alarm flashing across his face. He recalled the previous incident when Astrid had stayed out.
Julian’s fury still lingered in his memory. The thought of her navigating the night alone sent a shiver down his spine.
"But, Ma’am, it’s not safe," Larry protested, his voice laced with concern. "Especially after what happened last time. The boss will have my head on a platter if he finds out."
Astrid’s expression softened, and her eyes locked onto Larry’s. "I appreciate your loyalty, Larry. But this is important to me. Please, just this once." Her voice was barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of her desperation.
Larry’s resolve crumbled under Astrid’s pleading gaze. He nodded curtly, his jaw set in determination.
"Alright, Ma’am. I will take you wherever you need to go. But you must promise me one thing:
"Anything, Larry," Astrid replied, her gratitude palpable.
"You must promise me you will stay safe," Larry emphasized, his eyes burning with sincerity. "No matter what, you have to promise me that."
Astrid’s smile returned, this time infused with a deep appreciation for Larry’s unwavering loyalty. "I promise, Larry. Thank you."
Larry escorted Astrid to the car, and they drove out of the company, Astrid’s thoughts remained with her mother, while Larry’s focus was fixed on ensuring her safe passage.
He knew that he was taking a risk by defying his boss’s orders, but for a weird reason, he needed to do it for Astrid.
As they approached the hospital, Astrid’s tension eased, replaced by a sense of purpose.
She was one step closer to being with her mother, and for that, she was eternally grateful to Larry.
"Thank you, Larry," Astrid whispered, her hand touching his arm.
Larry’s eyes met hers in the rearview mirror, a warm smile spreading across his face. "Anytime, Ma’am. Just stay safe."
"You can stop here," she whispered and he pulled up, "Hospital?" Larry asked, stunned.
"Yeah, kinda... I will be back soon," she mutters and alighted from the car leaving Larry still curious as to why she is in the hospital.
She walked right into the hospital building and straight to the nurse.
The nurse recognized her and sent her to her mom’s room.
She walked into her mum’s room only to be met with some doctors surrounding her and this made her suspicions grow stronger.
"Is there any problem?" she asked when she got to where they were both standing.
"Mrs. Logan I wasn’t expecting you to come today," he let out looking back as he gestured to the doctors to leave.
She shook her head at this, "Yeah, I didn’t plan to come also, but I couldn’t be a day anymore without her,"
"Well, that’s a great decision because we are about to reach out with your news,"
Astrid’s heart raced with every passing moment as he said the word ’news’.
"Mrs. Logan, Can we talk for a minute?" Dr. Smith asked gently.
"Is everything okay? What’s going on with my mom?" Astrid’s voice trembled.
"Let’s step into the consultation room for a moment," Dr. Smith suggested.
Astrid hesitated but followed the doctor. "Please, tell me what’s happening," Astrid urged as they walked into his office.
Dr. Smith took a deep breath. "Astrid, your mother’s condition has become more complex. Despite our best efforts, she’s experiencing multi-organ failure. Her kidneys and liver are struggling to function." he announced knowing she wasn’t ready for him to beat around the bush.
Astrid’s eyes widened. "What does that mean?"
"It means we need to transfer her to a specialized hospital, JL Hospital, for advanced care. They have the expertise and equipment to manage her condition better," Dr. Smith explained.
Astrid felt a wave of panic. "But... why can’t you fix it here? You’ve done two surgeries already."
"I understand your concerns, but JL Hospital has a dedicated team for organ failure cases. They will provide the best chance for your mother’s recovery," Dr. Smith reassured.
Astrid shook her head. "No, I don’t want to move her. What if something happens during transport?"
"I understand your fears, but we will ensure a smooth transfer. Our team will accompany her, and JL Hospital is equipped to handle any complications," Dr. Smith said calmly.
Astrid’s anxiety spiked. "Can’t we just... keep trying here?"
Dr. Smith placed a gentle hand on her arm. "Astrid, we’ve done everything possible. This transfer is crucial for your mother’s survival. Trust us, we are doing this to give her the best chance."
Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears as Dr. Smith handed her a box of tissues.
"Let’s take a moment to process. We will answer any questions you have," Dr. Smith offered.
Astrid nodded, trying to compose herself.
"Shall we discuss the transfer details?" Dr. Smith asked.
Astrid nodded again, still reeling from the news.
"I will get the paperwork started," Dr. Smith said gently.
As Astrid signed the papers, Dr. Smith’s words echoed in her mind.
"This transfer is crucial for your mother’s survival." She gently went to her mum’s room.
She sat beside her bed and a loud sigh escaped her lips, "Mum..." she called, wrapping her hand around that of her mum.
"I thought you were going to fight this and get better," She whispered, trying to muffle the wave of tears trickling down her face.
"I am getting tired mum," she sniffed in, "Can you just for once open your eyes and tell me you are going to be okay?" She bit her lips and tears formed in her eyes.
"Astrid..." She heard someone call her name and she immediately wiped the tears off her face.
Before looking back to see Rowan standing there, "How come you are here?"
She asked and he rolled his eyes, "I might have come here to get the reason why you are here in the first place,"
He shrugged his shoulder and her eyes winded, "Are you stalking me?"
"Well, maybe maybe not it’s just that I haven’t been in a great mind since I noticed you came to the hospital yesterday,"
"Hey, Julian is going to get mad if he knows the both of us are together again," she reminded him.
"I see what you are doing, trying to change the topic," he moved forward.
"Who is she?" he asked his gaze focused on the unconscious mum and Astrid rolled her eyes, "No one for you to be worried about just leave,"
"I heard she’s going to be transferred to the JL hospital, don’t you think it will be nice as a friend for me to know who she is?"
"I am fine, I don’t want to get misunderstood again,"
He sighed and then stared at her mum, his hands in his pocket. "I know you’re hiding us from your husband, you keep hiding pains, despite you being in trouble several times because of his friend you refuse to say anything."
He breathes out loudly staring at Astrid, "Stop keeping pains to yourself fucking share it with orders so you can live freely."
"Rowan, I don’t need your advice, talk more about your help, so please leave."
"Astrid, instead of worsening things that could be done by your husband. Why are you hiding our pain when you have someone who can help?"
"Maybe because I don’t want to be called a golddigger, maybe because I don’t want to depend on someone who I have ruined his life at first I want to do it myself."
Rowan exhaled sharply, he couldn’t have caused her more pain, not in this situation.
"Fine, you don’t want to tell Julian, how about I help you? Our first meeting I was trying to manhandle you. How about I help without you having any guilt in your heart."
Astrid looked downward, " I don’t need your help, I will find one myself. I don’t want to owe you anything. You have done more than enough for me. I am satisfied with that. Thank you." Astrid let out and walked out of the room.
She met his assistant outside the door and bowed, she responded now finding her way to the doctor’s office.
"Boss, she doesn’t want you to be involved. Why don’t you leave it at that?" Rowan glanced down at the lady, "What’s the relationship with her?"
"With my investigation, she is her mum."
"Give my contacts to those who are transferring her out of the hospital. They should reach out to me if anything is needed."
"Boss, he’s married. You don’t want to get on the Logan’s bad side,"
"Yeah, I know that but why does my heart not listen to it?"
