Chapter 96: AN ACCIDENT

Mattie’s scream shattered the living room’s calm, sending chills down Zach’s spine as he rushed in from his planned meeting. The guards’ urgent call had prepared him for chaos.

"Ahh!" Mattie shrieked, her face twisted in rage, as she smashed another lamp to the ground.

"What the heck is wrong with you?" Zach demanded an alarm etched on his face.

"Dad! She slapped me! She... she... fucking raised her hands on me!" Mattie yelled, her voice trembling with resentment.

Zach’s eyes surveyed the destruction, his eyes widening at the shattered lamp. "Those cost a lot, you know that, right?"

Mattie glared at her father, accusation burning in her eyes. "Aren’t you concerned about your daughter, who just—"

"Tell me, Mattie," He interrupted, his tone measured, "what should I do? You destroyed friendships we’ve built for years."

He settled into his chair, undisturbed by Mattie’s escalating fury.

"Excuse me, Dad," Mattie spat, dashing toward him, "You’re supposed to be on my side, not supporting that fucking bitch!"

Zach watched his daughter, his expression a mix of shock and disappointment.

"Dad, why exactly do you hate me so much?" Mattie’s voice cracked. "Why isn’t my brother in support of me? Why are you guys making me look like a villain when my life is getting ruined?"

Zach sighed, his eyes weary. "Maybe if you didn’t give me so much stress, and be like your brother, I would put myself in your situation for a long time."

"Dad!" Mattie’s protest was laced with desperation.

"What’s your problem?" He asked, frustration creeping into his voice.

"You lost a friend, a partnership, and your job, yet you believe you have done nothing wrong."

"That brat was behind the reason our contract got exposed in the first place!" she cried out.

"But you caused it, you exposed our contract despite knowing how confidential it is.

"Dad!"

"But because of friendship, he didn’t ask for anything!" Zach spilled out in anguish.

"He stripped me of my position," she countered. "That ’bitch made Maren stop working with me!" she added almost in tears.

Mattie’s face twisted in pain. "As I can see, your contract isn’t canceled yet. Though she announced you weren’t working with her. She never called it off, expecting you to come back and apologize for what you have done. But you are still a proud brat!"

"Dad!"

"Honey... that is too much," Tonia announced walking down the stairs and Zach scrambled off his chair now, his anger visible.

"What the fuck are you trying to explain it’s the truth she’s getting a life wind more if you keep attacking that girl." Mattie fell to the ground in shock at the way her father didn’t support her but he just walked past her.

"Mu... mum.." she cried out and Tonia rushed to her embracing her.

"Mummy... I want that girl out. I don’t want to see her with Julian, he is mine and mine only," she cried out embracing her mum as tears trickled down her face.

Tonia was at a loss for words she didn’t know how to comfort her daughter.

"Fine... I will take care of it, you don’t have to cry, let’s get you into the audition for the next show."

"Mum, I am not working with Mar.."

"You have to, you need to. The companies are withdrawing from you, it’s been a while since you were called to work for them."

"But mum!"

"I will take care of it, just do what I want you to do!" Tonia yelled, Mattie sighed fine.

"I will.." she yelled back, annoyed at her mum now. "I can’t tell no one if you like me!" She did it to her mum’s face as she rushed out of the building finding her way to the car.

Tonia rushed after her calling her name but she didn’t respond and just drove out.

Astrid on the other hand was still busy with her job when her father called her again.

She picked up and the next word was curses thrown at her, "You bitch! How could you send that to him,"

Astrid smirked at this, "You seem to have forgotten that I might be a high school dropout, but I know every single detail regarding architecture."

"Are you trying to destroy my hard work?"

"My mom’s hard work. You have taken it from her by force spending every single money she has without taking pity on her." Astrid retorted.

"You little brat, be careful of your words or I will send you to the hospital just like your mother!" He hung up immediately and Astrud could only stare at the phone.

The thought of how he would torture her for days, with the thought of killing her flashed through her head.

Astrid sat frozen, her gaze locked on her phone as her mind whirled with dark thoughts.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that her father was involved in her mother’s tragic fate in some way or the other and hoped his plan against her wouldn’t work.

Just then, Julian walked into the office, intending to summon her to his room. "Astrid," he called, his deep voice breaking the silence.

Astrid remained motionless, lost in her thoughts. "Astrid..." Julian repeated, his tone softer this time.

Manny, noticing Astrid’s trance-like state, gently tapped her shoulder. Astrid jerked upright, her eyes widening as she met Julian’s piercing gaze.

"What... why are you here?" Astrid stuttered, her cheeks flushing.

Julian’s expression softened, concern etched on his face. "You look lost. Is everything okay?"

Astrid swallowed hard, recalling her father’s ominous words. She shook her head, forcing a smile. "No, not at all. I am just trying to recall something... my mind got carried away."

Julian’s eyes narrowed, sensing something was amiss, but he chose not to press the issue.

"Alright... come to my office," Julian instructed, his tone firm.

Astrid hesitated. "It’s lunch period, I need to eat."

Julian snorted. "I don’t care; come to my office."

Astrid breathed out loudly, resigned to obeying Julian’s command.

As she entered Julian’s office, her eyes widened in surprise. A small table was arranged with an assortment of healthy dishes.

Grilled chicken breast with roasted vegetables, Quinoa salad with mixed greens and cherry tomatoes. Steamed fish with lemon and herbs then Fresh fruit platter with Greek yogurt

"Wow!" Astrid exclaimed, her hunger momentarily forgotten.

But as she approached Julian, her expression faltered, remembering her anger toward him. "Is.." She stopped midway now pouting her lips.

Julian smiled, noticing Astrid’s conflicting emotions. "I thought you might be hungry," he said, his voice gentle.

Astrid’s eyes narrowed. "What’s this? You are trying to butter me up?"

Julian chuckled. "Maybe a little. Sit down, let’s talk."

Astrid hesitated before taking a seat.

"And Yes, this is for you, enjoy yourself." but she hesitated. "You don’t have to do that, not like you should be concerned with me."

He rolled his eyes at this and pulled her to take her seat. "I am still your husband, your responsibility is mine so I need to make sure you eat if I don’t want to get in trouble with my father."

Astrid scoffed at this, "So you have been caring about me because of your father?"

Julian exhaled sharply, "Let’s not start with this," he called her out.

"Well not like you’re my real husband, but I would take it because I am hungry."

Julian knew about responding to her when his phone rang out, he pulled it out from his pocket staring at the caller ID which didn’t look familiar to him.

Julian’s hands moved swiftly as he picked up the phone, placing it against his ear. For a moment, he remained silent, his mind bracing for the unknown.

"Hello?" a voice on the other end said.

"Who is this?" Julian’s deep voice demanded.

"We’re calling from the hospital, sir," the caller replied. "Miss Mattie was rushed into the emergency room, and your number was listed as her emergency contact."

Julian’s grip on the phone tightened. "What the fuck happened to her?"

The caller’s tone turned somber. "She was involved in a fatal accident, sir."

Julian’s face paled. "What the fuck! I will be there as soon as possible."

He slammed the phone down, his movements urgent as he grabbed his car keys from the table.

Astrid watched him, confusion etched on her face. "Hey Julian, is everything okay?"

Julian didn’t look back, his focus fixed on the door. "Mattie had an accident. She’s in the hospital right now."

Astrid’s eyes widened in alarm as Julian rushed out of the office.
