Chapter 76: A BREAK

"A break?" Mattie asked her heart, thumping really hard, of all the things she didn’t want this from him.

Julian stared at Mattie, his expression incredulous. He never wanted their relationship to end this way, but she was pushing him too far.

"We can’t..." Mattie’s voice trembled as tears welled up in her eyes. She sank to her knees, desperation etched on her face. "Please, we can’t do this. We can sort things out together."

Julian took a deep breath, his resolve firm. "I have tried my best to understand you, Mattie, but we need a break from each other. It will be a great help for both of us."

Mattie’s eyes widened, accusations flashing in them. "You are beginning to fall for her, aren’t you? That bitch..."

Julian’s jaw clenched. "She doesn’t want anything to do with me because you have constantly bullied her into refusing treatment. You are not the girl I once knew."

Mattie’s voice cracked. "You don’t love me anymore, do you?"

Julian’s eyes locked onto hers, his tone resolute. "That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out. My heart is wavering, and I hate lies. I won’t do that to you."

Mattie’s face contorted. "Julian, please..."

"I’m falling for her," Julian admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

"From Paris, when I let you go alone, my heart began to waver."

Mattie’s hands flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. "Stop, please..."

Julian’s expression softened, but his words remained firm. "Maybe if I stay away from you for a while, I will get myself back."

As Julian turned to leave, Mattie lunged forward, but he gently pushed her back.

"Stop. Let’s sort things out, and you need to work on your behavior."

With that, Julian stormed out of the room, leaving Mattie crumpled on the floor.

She was losing him, she couldn’t breathe. Tears streamed down her face as despair consumed her.

Just then, Stephan walked into the room, his eyes widening at the sight of Mattie devastated on the ground.

He rushed to her side, squatting beside her. "Mat.."

Mattie stared up at Stephan, her eyes red-rimmed, "He sa... said he wanted a b... break." she cried and Stroban pulled her into a tight embrace.

"I am so sorry, Mattie," he cooed, but then she disengaged from the embrace now staring into his eyes.

"Can you put an end to her?" she asked and Stepphan raised his eyebrow, "What? It isn’t hard for you and you can get..."

"I am a doctor, Mattie," Stephan said, wiping away her tears. "You don’t want my license revoked, do you?" Mattie’s lips trembled as she gazed up at Stephan.

Stephan’s expression turned uneasy at this, "And that’s why it’s easier for you, Stephan," Mattie continued, her tone laced with desperation. "Aren’t you my closest friend? Why can’t you do this for me?"

Stephan shifted uncomfortably.

"Julian heard us talking," Stephan whispered urgently. "He knows I pretended to help you and forced me to talk. Julian isn’t as stupid as you think."

Mattie’s eyes locked onto Stephan’s. "Why?" Mattie asked, his voice barely audible.

"You still don’t know how dangerous he can be once he turns his back on you, do you?" Stephan’s voice dropped to a whisper.

"Just end her before he falls for her more, please." Mattie’s words sent a chill down Stephan’s spine.

She pulled him closer, and before Stephan could resist, she kissed him on Adam’s apple. He shut his eyes in frustration.

Stephan Rays, son of another powerful businessman, had pursued his dream of becoming a doctor.

Yet, his family legacy and responsibility to inherit his father’s multi-million-dollar Automobile company remained.

"You’ve done it before for me," Mattie whispered, her breath sending shivers down Stephan’s spine.

Stephan’s resolve weakened.

"You can’t do it without getting caught," he sighed and Mattie’s grip on his arm tightened.

"Fine, I will find a way," Stephan relented, bobbing his head.

The door creaked open, and they quickly stood up from their awkward position.

There Miles stood in the doorway, his smile unnerving.

"Miles? Since when have you been there?" Mattie asked in shock, the nervousness shown on her face.

Miles strutted toward them, his smile still unwavering. "Why would you like to know that?" Miles asked, glancing around the room.

Mattie and Stephan exchanged nervous glances.

"Did you eavesdrop on our conversation?" Stephan asked and Miles stopped between them, his head tilted.

"Is there something you are discussing that you wouldn’t like me to hear?" Miles’ sly smirk made them quiver and then Mattie forced a laugh.

"What are you talking about, Miles?" Miles’ smile broadened.

"I think you know exactly what I’m talking about," he said, his eyes glinting.

"Do I look like a joke to you both?"

Miles asked this time as their smile vanished, replaced by a menacing glare.

Mattie and Stephan exchanged awkward smiles, their unease could be seen.

Before Stephan could react, a punch landed on his face, sending him stumbling back.

"You bastard!" Miles snarled followed by Mattie gasping.

Stephan clutched his jaw, wincing. "What was that for?" Stephan asked, still surprised by his friend’s attack.

"That’s for the fact that you’re cheating on my sister and our best friend," Miles spat.

"You... what are you talking..." Another punch collided with his jaw, shutting him up.

"Mil..." Matties tried to step in, but Miles’ hand shot up, halting her.

Miles’s eye displayed furry this time. "I have always let you get away with things because we share the same last name, but this will be the last warning I will give you." This warning was directed to Mattie leaving her aghast.

"You’re just as guilty," Miles accused, his voice dripping with venom.

Stephan struggled to regain his footing, his eyes darting between the siblings.

"If a hair on Astrid is touched again, I won’t hesitate to tell the world how I would destroy my sister in front of them,"

Miles’ warning hung in the air as he turned to leave. Mattie clenched her Fist trembling with rage. Her brother just got mad at her because of the same Astrid.

His long strides carried him swiftly out of the hallway, his mind fixed on Astrid. As he approached the OR (Operation Room) Dr. Lee also walked out now talking to Julian.

"Mr. Logan," Dr. Lee began, "Mrs. Logan is stable. The surgery was successful.

Julian’s expression softened slightly. "What’s her condition?"

Dr. Lee took a deep breath. "She is recovering well, but we need to monitor her closely. The head trauma was severe, and we will need to assess her cognitive function and motor skills."

Julian nodded, his eyes narrowing. "And her thyroid condition?"

"Ah, yes," Dr. Lee said. "We will need to adjust her medication and monitor her hormone levels closely. Losing weight will also help alleviate symptoms, but we will also recommend dietary changes and lifestyle modifications."

Julian’s gaze intensified. "What kind of modifications?"

Dr. Lee hesitated. "A balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management... and avoiding traumatic events, of course."

Julian’s jaw clenched. "I will make sure she follows the instructions."

Dr. Lee nodded. "I will prescribe medication to regulate her thyroid hormones. We will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor her progress."

Just then, the rest of the Logan family emerged from the waiting room.

Astrid’s father stepped forward, his expression concerned. "Julian, how is she?"

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "She’s stable."

Astrid’s stepmum Leila, smiled sweetly. "Oh, thank goodness, I felt so bad."

Then Nadine, chimed in, one could tell from her voice which was dripping with insincerity. "Yes, we were all so worried about her."

Julian’s gaze swept the room, his expression unreadable.

Then Dr. Lee cleared his throat. "Mrs. Logan will need rest and recovery time. I recommend reducing stress and avoiding overexertion."

Julian nodded. "Of course, Doctor. We will ensure she receives the best care."

Leila added, "We will take care of everything."

Nadine smiled. "Yes, we will make sure she’s comfortable."

Julian’s eyes lingered on her family, his thoughts hidden behind a mask of calm.

Dr. Lee handed Julian a folder with Mrs. Logan’s treatment plan. "Keep me updated on her condition."

Julian nodded. "I will."

Josh patted Julian’s back and the Logans couldn’t help but notice their fake concerns.

Becky felt so bad for the little girl, she wanted to know what she had gone through at the hands of these demons.

She would be the best mother to her, if possible. Just then Desmond came forward and patted his son’s shoulder.

"Now that we are sure she is stable we would leave, I am pretty sure you are man willing to do the rest?" Julian nodded his head and he smiled.

Becky spread her arms for him to embrace her but he squinted his eyes, "Oh... I had taken that little advantage, guess I can’t tell when it will come again," she whispered and they all smiled.

They left and Julian exhaled sharply, glancing back at the surgery room.

"Astrid, I will ensure you receive the best care, no matter the cost, and hope you will forgive me."

While Miles on the other hand could only stare at his friend still lost in his thinking.
