Chapter 74: HIS FEELINGS
Chapter 74: HIS FEELINGS
Larry pulled up in front of the hospital, Panic gripped Julian’s heart as he slighted abs and quickened his pace, racing toward the hospital building.
"Hold on, Astrid. Please hold on," he whispered, his voice trembling.
As he burst through the doorway, Julian bellowed for help.
"Someone! Anyone! We need help now!"
The hallway erupted into chaos, but Julian’s focus remained fixed on Astrid’s pale face.
Doctors rushed out of their offices, seeing Julian sprinting in with his wife.
Astrid was helped onto the stretcher and rolled into the emergency unit instantly. Julian followed closely, his face etched with worry.
"Sir, I am afraid you can’t come in," a doctor stammered, taking a step back.
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What do you mean I can’t go inside? That’s my wife in there!"
The doctor swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly. "I-I understand, Mr. Logan, but this is a restricted area. We need to assess Mrs. Logan condition without any... distractions."
Julian’s jaw clenched, his gaze piercing. "I am not a distraction. I am here..."
Then another doctor hastily interrupted, fear creeping into his voice. "I apologize, Mr. Logan, but hospital policy is clear. Only authorized personnel are allowed in the emergency unit."
Julian’s frustration boiled over. He slammed his fist against the wall, the sound echoing through the hallway.
"Fine!" Julian growled, his eyes blazing. "But keep me updated. I want to know everything. Every test, every diagnosis, every treatment. Do you understand?"
They all nodded hastily, their eyes darting around the hallway. "Y-yes, Mr. Logan. We will keep you informed."
As the emergency unit doors closed, Julian punched the wall again, his anger and helplessness pent up.
He took a deep breath, trying to calm down. He needed to be strong for Astrid.
"Please," Julian whispered, his eyes fixed on the closed doors. "Save her."
The doctor’s voice was barely audible. "We will do our best, Mr. Logan."
A few hours later Julian was still pacing anxiously outside the emergency unit, his eyes fixed on the door and just in time the medical team rushed Astrid’s gurney out.
"Where are you taking her?" Julian demanded, his voice low and urgent, his heart racing with every step.
One of the nurses glanced up, her expression sympathetic. "Surgery, sir. We need to operate immediately."
Julian’s face twisted in anguish as he followed the gurney, his mind reeling with worst-case scenarios.
"Surgery? This can’t be... she was fine this evening," he whispered his head flashing in different scenarios.
Then a doctor, a middle-aged man with a somber expression, intercepted him.
"Mr. Logan, I am Dr. Lee, the lead surgeon. We need to discuss Astrid’s condition."
Julian’s eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched. "What’s happening to her? Tell me everything."
Dr. Lee hesitated, before focusing on Julian. "Mrs. Logan wasn’t to be brought in early immediately after the incident," he stated and Julian exhaled sharply.
"This had made her suffer severe head trauma, including a subarachnoid hemorrhage and possible cerebral edema. Her thyroid condition is also a concern."
Julian’s face paled, his lips trembling. "Will she...will she make it?" His voice cracked, barely above a whisper.
Dr. Lee’s expression turned grave. "We will do everything possible, but the next 24 hours are critical."
Julian’s eyes widened in horror, his hands clenched into fists. "No...no, this can’t be happening." He felt like his world was crumbling around him.
Dr. Lee’s voice softened. "I understand this is overwhelming, but we need your consent for emergency surgery."
Julian’s gaze dropped to the consent form in Dr. Lee’s hand. His vision blurred as he read the words: "Risk of paralysis, brain damage...".
He felt a lump form in his throat, his chest constricting. "Sign this," Julian growled, his hand shaking as he scribbled his signature.
Dr. Lee’s eyes flicked up, a hint of fear in their depths. "Mr. Logan, please understand..."
"Save her," Julian interrupted, his voice cracking, desperation seeping into his tone.
"Do whatever it takes. I don’t care about the costs, the risks, anything. Just save her."
Dr. Lee nodded hastily, Julian’s reputation was well-known, powerful, ruthless, and unforgiving, they dared not allow anything to happen to his wife.
"We will. I promise."
As the medical team disappeared into the surgery room, Julian collapsed against the wall, his body wracked with sobs.
He slid to the floor, his back against the wall, and buried his face in his hands.
He ran his hands through his hair brushing it backward as his shoulders shook uncontrollably.
"This is fucked up," he whispered, his voice shattered. Regret fills in him, he shouldn’t have been stupid to listen to Mattie. Like Astrid had he should have shown some care. Maybe he would have noticed then that Astrid was more wounded.
He rocked back and forth, his eyes fixed on the surgery room doors.
"Please, God...save her," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
The hospital’s sounds faded into the background as Julian’s world narrowed to one person, Astrid.
Just then Becky and Desmond arrived at the hospital. Murmurs and gossip-filled everywhere seeing them in the hospital, the news had gone round. The press has already seen a hot topic they were going to talk about for the week.
Becky had also found out about the incident through the news and already found their way down to the hospital.
Becky rushed toward Julian, her arms open wide. Before she could say a word, she enveloped him in a warm embrace.
"Julian, my baby," she whispered, holding him tight.
Julian’s composure crumbled as he buried his face in his mother’s shoulder trying to hide his pain.
"I am sorry, Mom...I am so sorry, I couldn’t protect her" Julian whispered, his voice cracking.
Becky stroked his hair, her touch soothing. "What happened, sweetie?"
Julian pulled back, his eyes red-rimmed. "I should have been faster...I should have brought her here sooner."
Mr. Logan’s expression turned grave. "What are you talking about, son?"
Julian’s voice broke. "Mattie’s words...I listened to her. I let Astrid go. If only I had..."
Becky’s grip on Julian’s arms tightened. "No, Julian. You can’t blame yourself. You did everything you could." she let out.
Even though she is so mad at him she still can’t bear to watch him in pain
But Julian’s regret consumed him. "I didn’t understand...I didn’t realize how much she meant to me until now."
Becky was stunned by this but didn’t utter a word "Maybe you are harboring some feelings for her Julian."
Julian’s face contorted. "I don’t know...I don’t know what I feel. But I know I can’t lose her."
As they spoke, Dr. Lee walked from the surgery room, his face somber.
"Mr. Logan—" Dr. Lee began.
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. "Tell me she’s okay."
Dr. Lee’s expression softened. "The surgery is ongoing. We are doing everything possible."
Julian’s face had crumbled again, and Becky wrapped her arms around him once more.
"We are here for you, Julian. We are here for Astrid," she whispered.
Desmond watched, his expression stoic, but his eyes betrayed concern for his son.
For the first time, Julian confronted his feelings for Astrid. He realized his cold exterior had masked a deep emotional connection.
"She will be okay right?" Julian whispered, his voice barely audible.
Becky held him tight. "We will get through this together, Julian."
Just then Julian saw Miles marching into the hospital hallway, his face twisted in rage.
"You stupid motherfucker!" Miles yelled, his fists clenched.
Before Julian could react, Miles grabbed him, spinning him around.
"You let this happen to her!" Miles slammed Julian against the wall and punched him again on the face
