Chapter 58: TEACH ME HOW TO BE LIKE YOU
Astrid and Miles sat across from each other in the empty restaurant, the only sound was the clinking of utensils on plates. Astrid’s frustration poured out as she spoke between bites of her lunch.
"I know nothing about that file," she muttered, her voice laced with irritation.
Miles’s lips twitched, struggling to contain a smile. "You don’t have to get mad, I already yelled at him for calling you out that way."
Astrid’s anger boiled over at this. "You don’t get it! He yelled at me! One minute he’s calm, the next, another he gets mad!" Tears streamed down her face as she took a deep bite, now into her sandwich.
Miles’s expression softened. He had cleared the restaurant, ensuring Astrid’s outburst remained private.
As the eldest son of the Adams family, a tech guru, and business partner to the Logans, Miles’s influence commanded respect.
"Who are you suspicious of?" Miles asked, his tone gentle.
Astrid paused, her eyes narrowing. "If I tell you, what will you do?" She knew the wealthy operated differently, and accusations required caution. If she is not careful with her words she might make someone suffer for her mistakes.
Miles’s response was flat,
"Nothing." he was beginning to understand the lady before him.
He had sensed Astrid’s discomfort around Stephan, but she refused to tell anyone what went on, he was still trying to get his hands on it though.
Astrid’s gaze lingered on Miles, her thoughts still trying to decide if to tell him or not.
"It’s fine if you don’t want to talk, but you know you can get your lick back, right?"
Her eyes widened. "Is there a way I can do that without getting in trouble?"
Miles smirked. "So you do know who did it?" Astrid’s squinted gaze and pursed lips hinted at her suspicions.
"I don’t want to accuse you wrongly," Astrid said, "but if I can’t get back at the person, then I will do it myself," she added.
Just then, a familiar voice interrupted. "I told you to remember the title you hold."
Astrid’s eyes darted backward, her gaze locking onto Maren, who stood there looking elegant and beautiful like always.
Mike’s gaze squinted at this, he still hadn’t forgotten about the cold encounter between them both the night, and how Maren had tried to kiss him.
"Maren, it’s nice seeing you again," Astrid said, as she wiped the tears off her face.
"The restaurant has been booked, come back.." He stopped talking when Astrid shook her head.
"She is a friend," Astrid let out smiling as she tried to make a seat for Maren.
"Good day to you Miles," she greeted and he had that irked expression.
Maren felt bad at this, she had been admiring him from afar, and he had been smiling at Astrid’s action all this while. But the moment she came and they disappeared.
She had her seat as Miles’ eyes caught some stains on Astrid lips, he stood up and helped clean her lips.
A weird feeling crept in him as he shook his head, "She is my best friend’s wife for now." He reminded himself and sat back in his seat.
Just then Astrid sneezed, she looked around like she was looking for something, her face was becoming reddish.
"Hey... Astrid, what is wrong?..." Asyrid slapped Maren’s hands off as she stood abruptly from the chair.
"Hey... what is..." Miles let out moving toward Astrud as he got closer his sneeze also followed and this made Maren confused.
Maren moved forward but Mile pulled Astrid back in a rush as he also tried to protect himself.
"Did you touch a cat?" He asked and Astrod sneezed again, Maren was more than shocked.
"Yeah... I... have a pet cat," she let out as she brought out her small bag and a cat purring from it.
Astrid eyes widened as fear crept into her, and her breath almost seized... "Please take it away.." she cried out and Miles glared at Maren who was more than confused.
"Okay okay..." Maren let out and then snapped her finger, some guard rushed inside and took her bag with the cat away.
"Into the car," she whispered, "I am
Sorry, I didn’t know you were allergic to cats," she apologized sadly.
"Wash your hands and stay far from her," Maren felt embarrassed but needed to do so.
The moment Maren left, Astrid could breathe again, "Are you okay?" he asked, and then she smiled at him.
"I am fine... I didn’t mean to Sne..." she fluttered her eyes in shock seeing Miles’s face also looking worried.
"Why is your face?"
"I am also allergic to cats, never mind..." Then Astrid smiled at this.
"We share the same allergies!" she squealed and he snickered at her.
A few minutes later Maren was back and clean, though Miles still was worried.
Since Asteroid didn’t react again to Maren Sitting beside her he didn’t push further.
"Maren.. Eat..." Astrid gestured at her, then Maren looked down and shook his head.
"I am taking just salad for now, I am on a strict diet," she announced, making Astrid sigh.
"You are skinny already, wanna disappear?" Miles asked, irritated by this.
This was the first time he had directed a conversation at her, a big smile appeared on her face as she stared directly at him.
"If you’re going to accept me that way, then I don’t mind." Maren’s bold declaration caught Astrid off guard, that head whipped to the side, her eyes wide with surprise.
But Miles’s response was immediate and blunt. "Not interested."
Maren’s smile faltered, her face falling, and then Miles groaned, attempting to glance down at who had kicked him. Astrid’s stern gaze answered his question.
"You don’t talk to a lady that way," Astrid chastised, her tone firm and protective.
Miles rolled his eyes, his expression unrepentant.
Maren, noticing Miles’ irritated reaction and wanting to change the topic intervened, her voice calm and collected. "Girl, what do you want to do? I can help with better plans."
Astrid’s gaze shifted to Maren, her smile returning as she bit into her sandwich.
"I want her to confess her crime to Julian," Astrid said, her jaw clenched.
"Like she made Julian tell me I would face a disciplinary act..," Astrid added, her eyes flashing with anger.
While Miles chuckled. "You can also make Julian apologize to you if you are this mad at him."
Maren noticed Miles’s calm demeanor, his expression serene whenever he was talking to her.
"Make friends with her," Maren suggested, "and convince Julian to give you a few more days to sort it out."
Miles and Astrid exchanged confused glances.
"Trust me," Maren continued, "She will let her guard down when you do. You can make her believe you have identified the real culprit who will be entirely different from her."
Astrid’s eyes widened, her mind racing with the plan.
Then Maren’s hands enveloped Astrid’s, her touch gentle and soothing.
"You have a pure heart," Maren said, her voice filled with emotion.
"I shouldn’t dirty it, but you can’t live long in this world with that pure heart."
Miles intervened, his voice firm, as he slapped Maren’s hands off Astrid’s.
"Allow her to continue having that pure heart," Miles said, his eyes locked onto Maren’s. "I will protect her from danger instead."
Maren felt a pang in her chest, her feelings stirred. She couldn’t help but wonder what she was doing wrong, why Miles remained violent toward her.
As Maren withdrew her hands, her eyes lingered on Miles’s resolute face but those gazes were all on Astrid.
"No... I want her to pay, she also made Julian lose a client the other day, if not for Rowan who had intervened," Astrid looked down sadly as Miles and Maren exchanged glances this time.
"Julian would have hated me forever," Astrid let out with a pouty lip.
"You are close to Rowan?" Maren couldn’t help but ask, and Astrid took a deep breath.
"It’s a long story,"
"He needed my forgiveness but the only way was for him to give me the client details... so.." she shrugged her shoulders while biting into her sandwich again.
"How about Julian? How did he feel? Wasn’t he mad?" Astrid glanced at them both.
It’s something confidential she isn’t spilling any of it. She only shook her head while Miles was left stunned.
He had more questions he wanted to ask but stopped when his phone rang and he sighed again, "Excuse me.." he told them and left.
"I am so sorry for the cat. I never knew you were allergic to it." Maren apologized sincerely.
Astrid’s smile was warm, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "It might be playing with my life, but does it make you feel better that I get you to find out Miles and I are both allergic to it?"
Maren forced a small smile, her guilt still evident. Astrid’s gaze turned piercing as she exhaled sharply.
"Do you like Miles?" she asked, the question bothering her for a while now.
Maren’s eyes widened, her face flushing. "Wh... what? It..." she stuttered.
Astrid’s tone was matter-of-fact. "You are closer to me to become his girlfriend, aren’t you?"
Maren was speechless, her thoughts racing as Astrid’s expression turned introspective.
"You don’t have to feel guilty about it. I have been used, countless times. I hardly see people act nice to me for who I am." She let out taking in her last bite.
Maren had been drawn to Astrid from their first meeting, and had wanted to become Astrid’s friend but got ulterior motives after noticing Astrid closeness to Miles.
Now, watching Astrid drink her juice and slam it onto the table, Maren felt a pang of remorse.
But Astrid’s words cut through Maren’s thoughts. "You said living in the world with a pure heart isn’t the right choice, right?"
Maren shook her head instantly, attempting to clarify. "I didn’t mean it that way, I just..."
Astrid interrupted her, "Teach me how to be like you. Make me have your confidence, and body, and Also, teach me how to act like Julian Logan’s wife."
Maren’s eyes locked onto Astrid’s, her expression stunned.
"The one no one will dare bully," Astrid added.
"Then you will help me get closer to Miles," Maren pointed, Astrid smiled at this, getting her closer to Miles shouldn’t be a big deal for her.
"I am cool with that,"
